The bit where she's teaching them how to "keep from getting cold"... wouldn't they be electrocuted by the hairdryers if they were connected to a power supply with the extension cord? Just a thought. Like Mrs. O's saying the only way they can save themselves is to go to death willingly. |

This is one of the main reasons people criticise Elvis Costello - many of his songs are very cryptic. I think the whole 'watching the detectives' is kind of a metaphor for his girlfriend being very cold and callous after they're broken up, while the "detectives", perhaps the characters friends and relatives, search for his body. Elvis Costello is a real poet, so I don't see this as much of a narrative song, just an incredibly detailed metaphor that is beautiful and complex enough to be taken for a story. At the end of the day, everyone has their own interpretation, and they're welcome to it. |

Too true, the live version is the best... I heard it first. I like "Get down" "I am!" It jsut seems much tighter overall to me. |
