CHVRCHES – Down Side of Me Lyrics | 8 years ago |
"I believe that you're all that you said you would be If I keep you away from the down side of me" I get tinges of abuse in this image. Someone who feels loved when she doesn't show flaws |
Jónsi – Grow Till Tall Lyrics | 13 years ago |
That is always how I have interpreted it as well. Upon listening to it ( dozens of times) and hearing it live, it sounds like "not you". |
Bloc Party – Pioneers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
err i meant to say the m83 remix....*slaps forehead* |
Bloc Party – Pioneers Lyrics | 16 years ago |
everyone else have exhausted all the possible meanings of this song. so i'll just reiterate that it rocks. and that the mogwai remix is fucking brilliant. |
Freezepop – Less Talk More Rokk Lyrics | 17 years ago |
this song is so catchy it's ridiculous. i love the whole feel of it. reminds me of all the crazy college parties i've been to...its hot and crowded and all the drunks are yelling, but you're having a fucking great time rocking out anyway. |
Snow Patrol – Set the Fire to the Third Bar Lyrics | 17 years ago |
martha is amazing in this song. the piano is so haunting, and it compliments her voice so perfectly. it's the best song on the album by far. |
The Mountain Goats – Maybe Sprout Wings Lyrics | 17 years ago |
i get a really depressing feel from this song. i think the saying the names three times is like when you lose someone and you're looking for them, you shout their names over and over. in this case he's not sure they'll come back to him ie "canaries in the mines" (canaries were sent into coal mines to with miners as a way to test for methane gas - if they died it was a toxic site). he's "clawing" like he wants to get out. its seems like he wants to "maybe sprout wings" to get away from the ghosts/nameless things i.e. depression or bad experiences from his past. he wants to start over again. i don't know if i'm right...just my two cents. |
The Mountain Goats – Broom People Lyrics | 17 years ago |
its definitely "babbling brook" at the end. i actually just saw them in concert a few days ago. and his explanation (or rather intro) for the song was that it was based on his own experience, 14, and sneaking out of class to be with be with his girl. |
Kevin Devine – No Time Flat Lyrics | 18 years ago |
saw him perform this song last weekend...its even more powerful live. excellent song! |
The Delgados – City Consumes Us Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"faced with the with reality i choose revolity" that should actually be: "faced with reality, i choose frivolity." |
The Unicorns – I Was Born (A Unicorn) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
man, this song gets stuck in my head. so. friggin. catchy. |
Third Eye Blind – Slow Motion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i'm probably one of the few that prefers the instrumental version of this song over the lyrical version. there's something very profound about the music that i don't get in the version with lyrics. it lacks flow and cohesiveness - he's almost trying to say too much. the music gets lost. i love the climax of the piano halfway through, its bombastic and then quiet - i could just lay on my with my eyes closed and listen to it all day. |
Aimee Mann – Nothing Is Good Enough Lyrics | 18 years ago |
its a big old "fuck you" to her former record label, in lyrical form. "It doesn't really help that you can never say what you're looking for but you'll know it when you hear it, know it when you see it walk through the door So you say-- so you've said many times before." aka them never being happy with the work that she's creating...they don't know what they want, but they aren't hearing it from her...pretty self explanatory, actually. |
Sufjan Stevens – The Man of Metropolis Steals Our Hearts Lyrics | 18 years ago |
while i can see the resemblences to moses, jukeapples, but in this song i'd have to agree with those who said who use the christ comparison. superman, son to the most powerful man on krypton (god, maybe?)...benevolent yet powerful ie superspeed, vision, super hearing etc (jesus performs miracles himself..water to wine, healing the sick)...moses doesn't translate in this way. in all honesty, it seems to be more about god, than christ. "raise the boat, raise the dead", reminds me of noah's ark, the flood, and the water rising..."if you take us away, still we can say"...even if you rid the world of sin, it returns and your son will be there to fight against it (ie "if he had hands to tremble all over"). the underlying christian theme seems to dictate god talking to/about his son ("dreamt the lake, took the boy"), as well as the people talking about him. The lines, "Trouble falls in my home Troubled man, troubled stone turn a mountain of lies turn a card for my life Man of Steel, Man of Heart Tame our ways, if we start To devise something more Something half ways" seems a direct reference to christs dying on the cross...while others seem to reference the ark, and his son. the songs switches POV's from a plural 'we' (the people) in the beginning, to a singular "I" in the middle, and then back again...which is confusing. in general i think its about a people putting faith in someone to save them, and watch over them. and in his doing this (in a selfless way), they realize all the goodness that humainty can offer. it gives them hope. clearly, it takes a special person to do that to a race (society, group, whatever) of people...be it the man of steel, jesus, moses, martin luther king jj etcetera. while the references are biblical, this idea can be applied to a great deal of figures in history that led us to freedom and tolerance. |
Dinosaur Jr. – Feel the Pain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i always thought of it as the singer being someone who has everyone telling them their problems, to the point where they can't feel anything for themselves. essentially they've "screwed us both again," its like all their problems have burdened yourself with everyone elses problems that you end up digging a hole for yourself in the process. its the most depressing feeling ever. |
Dot Allison – Message Personal Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song is haunting. absolutely beautiful. i love the dichotomy, the push/pull of the lyrics. I think the second line says it best: "I'm with you, without you." incredible. |
The Knife – Heartbeats Lyrics | 18 years ago |
definitely agree Varulf. the cover version is just not the same. |
José González – Heartbeats Lyrics | 18 years ago |
in the chorus, i think its actually "wouldn't be good enough for me, now." fits better with the idea that its about a one night stand turned love affair. the singer can't settle for what he/she has, and wants more... to me, the original is far superior to this version. it could be the electronica girl in me (though i dig guys with guitars, i like iron and wine), or it could be Karin Dreijer Andersson's amazingly haunting voice (she also does the vocals for Royksopp's "What Else Is There?"). the words don't seem to have all the meaning that i get from the original version. its a pretty song covered the way he does it, but it lacks the gritty, sexy, tense synth that creates the mood for me. decent enough (the guitar in the beginning is especially nice), but if you're looking for amazing song check out the original by The Knife. |
The New Pornographers – The Bleeding Heart Show Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"That’s when we grab a hold Of whatever it is we fell into." that line gives me shivers every time i hear it. |
