Rilo Kiley – So Long Lyrics 18 years ago
ha! oh man. okay. first, ohxishxitsxdavid, i apologize for insulting you. i had the sense you were in the camp (usually the young'uns) who listen to elliott because he's soooo saaaaad and then to cut themselves to ribbons while listening to roman candle because elliott is the oooonly one who uuunderstaaands.

i was wrong. i apologize.

and i'm not an indie elitist. really. i'm not a sad little emo kid "who takes everything to heart." your facetiousness escaped me and i thought you were serious. i just went back and re-read your comment. your facetiousness still escapes me. perhaps you need to work on your internet facetiousness. or i need to work on my internet facetiousness spotting.

and i'm actually sort of flattered that someone called me an indie elitist. i went to oberlin and was never cool enough to hang with the black-clad pop-bottle-eyeglasses-wearing indie elitists who worked for the concert series and would sneer at you in their studded belts and converse all-stars as they stamped your hand for admission to shows. this is like total vicarious living via the internet. i am now an indie snob! cool!

i don't believe there are 'qualifications' to listen to his work. but i do think it takes a certain type of person to understand his work and not just chalk it up as sadness covered in depression sauce and served with a side of misery. i think you know what i mean-- how many reviews have you read that dismissed him as 'mister misery'? for example, pitchfork: "meekly mewed verses coated in thick, gloppy layers of heartbreak, lyrics hanging heavy with cold defeat, vocals seeped in doom."

right.

so, in closing: i read you wrong, i take it back, i shall summarily burn in hell for some short period of time for this. but please, don't call me a "so-called fan." cause that-- that i will take to heart.

Aimee Mann – Pavlov's Bell Lyrics 18 years ago
wow. these lyrics are totally incorrect.

1.) Because nobody knows
That'S HOW I nearly fell

2.) ALL of the Mariels should be MARIOs.

3.) I won't let it show
I'm all about denial
But can't DENIAL let me believe

4.) If you're what I need then only you can save me
So come on baby give me the FIX

("give me the fist?" are you kidding me?)

5.) History shows LIKE IT WAS SHOW AND TELL

6.) and this:
So tell me/ That someone nearly fell/ By ringing Pavlov's bell/ So then they sure as hell/ Oh Mariel
is just laughable. it doesn't even exist in the song. the actual lyrics are:

SO TELL ME/ THAT'S HOW I NEARLY FELL/ BY RINGING PAVLOV'S BELL/ SO BABY, SHOW AND TELL/ OH MARIO, MARIO

please correct this comedy of errors.

ohxishxitsxdavid, if you feel like slitting your wrists after listening to smith, you clearly don't possess the intelligence or emotional depth necessary to understand him and perhaps shouldn't attempt to listen to his work until you're at that point.

sorry, to clarify-- the line 'coast to coast' is one of smith's pet phrases in his lyrics, and jenny (and blake, likely) is an admirer of him and his work and is undoubtedly aware of this.

i tend to think of moonpix as one whole seamless piece, rather than individual songs. but this track never seemed to fit the rest of the album-- it's not as atmospheric or lush as the rest and kind of stands alone. i, um, usually don't play it.

Cat Power – Moonshiner Lyrics 18 years ago
no, it's actually a traditional irish folk song.

here are the original lyrics:

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home
And if you don't like me, well, leave me alone
I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
And the moonshine don't kill me, I'll live til I die

I've been a moonshiner for many a year
I've spent all me money on whiskey and beer
I'll go to some hollow, I'll set up my still
And I'll make you a gallon for a ten shilling bill

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home
And if you don't like me, well, leave me alone
I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
And the moonshine don't kill me, I'll live til I die

I'll go to some hollow in this counterie
Ten gallons of wash I can go on a spree
No women to follow, the world is all mine
I love none so well as I love the moonshine

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home
And if you don't like me, well, leave me alone
I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
And the moonshine don't kill me, I'll live til I die

Oh, moonshine, dear moonshine, oh, how I love thee
You killed me old father, but ah you try me
Now bless all moonshiners and bless all moonshine
Their breath smells as sweet as the dew on the vine

I'm a rambler, I'm a gambler, I'm a long way from home
And if you don't like me, well, leave me alone
I'll eat when I'm hungry, I'll drink when I'm dry
And the moonshine don't kill me, I'll live til I die

it then crossed the ocean and became a traditional american bluegrass song, which became an oscar brand (50's folksinger) song, which became a dylan song, which became a tupelo song, which became a chan song.

whew.

Elliott Smith – Everything Reminds Me of Her Lyrics 18 years ago
dear anyone who wants songs about heroin,

please reference any of smith's pieces which contain the words 'needle' or 'track,' or, better yet, both 'needle' AND 'track.' guaranteed your analysis will be correct, no matter how many multiple entendres he infuses the thing with.

dear anyone who wants a pure lost-love song,

go listen to this.

now i'm just waiting for someone to insist this one's about suicide. ("i mean, come on, you guys! 'leaving'? 'impaled'? and the religious motifs, which I'M SURE he meant for us to take TOTALLY LITERALLY AND NOT MERELY FOR THE SOMBER AND SACRED MOOD THEY EVOKE, clearly make this song religious and about church.. hello, funeral mass?")

pfft.

Elliott Smith – Everybody Cares, Everybody Understands Lyrics 18 years ago
someone earlier asked a question about the pencil full of poison lead.

the verse in which that line appears seems to be addressing the person being targeted for the intervention, which, we've deduced is himself. that would mean, then, that he's the one with the pencil.

(you got a pretty vision in your head/ a pencil full of poison lead/ and a sickened smile illegal in every town)

it seems he's explaining to himself why he's been targeted-- he doesn't think the 'right' things (depression and negativity), he doesn't write the 'right' things (his major subjects being lost love, pain, confusion, and drugs.. and while we're talking about poison lead, let's not forget all the revenge to the tune he extracts on his albums), and he doesn't act the 'right' way (self-mockery, despair, immaturity, etc, could all cause friends to construe his smile as 'sickened' rather than genuine). noting it's 'illegal in every town' seems to imply these beliefs are consensus, no matter which friend he turns to.

anyone who's endured serious (clinical) depression understands the sense of alienation that comes from knowing that not only are you not experiencing the world in the same way as the non-depressed around you, you're also appearing noticeably different and attracting concern or pity or strange glances when you just want to be left the hell alone. and worst of all, this 'concern' usually comes from people who don't understand the depth of the thing and tell you to 'just cheer up' or who think putting you away for a while will make the problem disappear. his anger in those last two lines (you fucking ought to stay the hell away from things you know nothing about) is so vicariously cathartic. for me, at least.

Elliott Smith – Say Yes Lyrics 18 years ago
i'm surprised no one's mentioned this..

here are the lyrics to a song by Big Star, one of smith's influences. note the similarities:

I'm in love with a girl
finest girl in the world
I didn't know I could feel this way.
Think about here all the time
always on my mind
I didn't know about love.
All that a man should do is true
I didn't know this could happen to me.

Elliott Smith – Pitseleh Lyrics 18 years ago
i'm interested to hear anyone's interpretations of the kid who's looking down the barrel (of a gun, presumably?) to finally make the noise he'd avoided making for so long. i just keep twisting that around in my head but can't make heads or tails of it. why is this the joke? what's the punchline? why is this the reason he doesn't want to know "where you are"?

maybe i'm being too literal and i should just accept that it only makes half-sense in the way that all decent poetry does. but that's very specific imagery and i think it's there for a specific reason.

input?

i'm fairly sure 'straight to over' is a british construction that means 'right over to.' as in, 'proceed straight to over the corner of 5th and broadway.'

my apologies if there is no 5th and broadway. i'm from ohio and as such have no knowledge of real cities.
