The Circulatory System – Solid Forms Dissolving Lyrics | 14 years ago |
genius. |
Josh Ritter – Thin Blue Flame Lyrics | 15 years ago |
With each stanza, he changes his view of faith through different aspects of the world. Thin blue flame=viewing the world through his own passion Thin blue wire=viewing world through men's constructions of faith i.e. religious belief systems Thin blue stream=viewing world through human relations i.e. war; then, constructs his own dreamlike version of heaven In the last stanza, he realizes that be just letting things play out, they all essentially contribute to this constructed version of heaven he describes before. My favorite line is "It's hell to believe there ain't a hell of a chance," meaning by cutting off your own hope for a perfect world you're placing yourself in hell. Without faith, you're not going to recognize good even when it's right in front of you. |
John Mayer – Vultures Lyrics | 15 years ago |
I think it's about temptation and the tricks it plays. "They've never gone this long without a kill before" suggests the vultures are the constant reminders of his body's dependency (could be drug addiction, sex, ice cream, anything really). His body is used to taking pleasure in one of those things, so it automatically tells him he needs it. BUT, as described in the chorus, John's determined to not give in, willing to give up his body in order to reach higher goals in life. What a hero. Very basic symbolism, but also very powerful. |
TV on the Radio – Dancing Choose Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Do your own thing. In my mind I'm breeding more minds. |
TV on the Radio – Stork and Owl Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Great interpretation. I might be able to add to a couple points though. The moon is what determines the ("lonesome") tide, which occurs every day. By focusing on this, you miss the larger cycles, which is represented by the yearly system that was based on Sirius' cycle through the sky by the Egyptians. In other words don't just focus on the simple life in front of you, but look towards celestial markers. The former being "the lonesome tide" while the latter, Dogstar/Sirius' dance, "it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes, it goes." Seven "goes", there are seven manifestations of life aka the sevenfold spirit. when all seven come together, in death, when "it falls apart," it becomes "perfect nothingness." Love conquers and is unaffected by death, as it walks through it like a door, except in more dimensions than humans can. "In and out" and "back and forth." Usually we just walk in or out to accomplish what we want, but love has complete dominion over it that suggests a timeless quality. The Jessica Rose part throws me off a little. Jessica Rose was the girl who pretended to be a young, innocent youtube blogger known as lonelygirl who became extremely popular. I think tv on the radio might be saying that by following the higher instructions of life, such as by Sirius, it creates a life that is beautiful in its innocence, the ideal example of which was that of lonelygirl, who enchanted the world in her natural beauty, despite being fake. This is my favorite TVotR song; the "ah"'s provide a heavenly feel that represent the wisdom of the owl who responds confidently to the energetic, quick pizzicato-strings who voice the questions of the young stork. |
TV on the Radio – Staring At The Sun Lyrics | 15 years ago |
that's exactly how i feel. this song tries to paint a picture of the ecstatic feeling that occurs when you leave the temporary perception of the physical world and become the "conscious clear." at first it does seem to cheapen the song since it's derived from that poem, but tv on the radio takes it an essential step further by giving a name to that which is answered, 'the sun.' this echoes hindu beliefs, where the upanishads say that those who have reached the state of pure consciousness realize they are both themselves and the sun at the same time. in other words, the song's about existing as/in/through God, which can only happen permanently through death, although we can catch glimpses of it during our human lives such as during orgasm, hence the possible sexual imagery. |
TV on the Radio – DLZ Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Everyone's at least somewhat right on this song. This song's about the Illuminati. And how they're dying. Finally. This is beginning to feel like the DAWN OF THE LUZ OF FOREVER. |
Wilco – Radio Cure Lyrics | 15 years ago |
at the end, the line changes to: "Oh, distance has THE way of making love understandable" Subtle, but oh so important |
Yo La Tengo – I Feel Like Going Home Lyrics | 15 years ago |
To me-- The singer is tired of the "high-life" so to speak, or hedonistic lifestyle, and instead just wants to go back to the subtle pleasures of life in the real, sober world, so to speak. cessiq's post earlier is pretty similar to this, but I think you can broaden that to include drugs of any type, or even sex (as possibly represented by the "he" in the first stanza) The voice seems to be tired of the wild lifestyle and just go back to the warmth of home. |
Bishop Allen – flight 180 Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song is about still feeling connected with the world, The narrator has had times when he feels lonely, but this flight is bringing him back in connection with civilization. The mundane interactions with the flight attendant, pilot, guy in the middle seat....are all he needs to see that he belongs in this world and that he does in fact have friends. His is able to relate his feeling of belonging among the people of the plane to the entire world as he realizes that the world is really just tons of mundane interactions like this over and over. The lights he sees below the plane remind him of this. All of the lights below are more or less the same, therefore no one should feel out of place. The stanza I really love is the third one. He refers to people he actually knows, that possibly may have caused his loneliness, and realizes that they all have to go through life too (the light shines on everyone the same). Reminds me of John Donne's For Whom the Bell Tolls. The fact that everyone can relate to eachother is what the speaker considers love, and declares he wants to be a more positive part of the world ("I'm coming home") Unbelievable song. |
The National – Mr. November Lyrics | 16 years ago |
*there you go. dammit |
The National – Mr. November Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Yet another interpretation that no one has talked about I don't think is that of a soldier. The soldier relationship with November is that the code for anything labeled N in the military is called November. Like A is Alfa, B Bravo, etc. Therefore this guy could be the 14th guy in his military company. And I think this explains the British are coming lines which everyone else has ignored. And the guy's in his best clothes i.e. uniform, symbolic of the overall unity of the country. And he's thinking about his old, normal life, when he was in his old, actual "best clothes" in the literal meaning. He's thinking about his girl and nervous in this unfamiliar situation. New Blue Blood (new royalty now that own country, opposite of redcoats, boxing movie), Great White Hope (Blue+White are American colors, boxing movie) both work. The chorus is one of strength and determination to win this battle. There are many similarities between war and boxing matches or other sporting events. He's crying out the strength of his identity while resolutely proclaiming his determination to win for his country. He keeps repeating it for self-assurance 'cause of course he's nervous, and also he truly wants at all costs to not fuck over his home country or even his military company. There you guy, I hope people actually read this long thing. |

this is a jose gonzalez song, unless he redid it with zero 7 |
The Goo Goo Dolls – Iris Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Isn't it about a guy watching a girl but never actually talking to her? "I'd give up forever to touch you" as in he isn't able to touch her now. "I just want you to know who i am" as in she doesn't know who he is right now. Plus the title would fit because the iris is part of the eye, which connects with the watching theme. "i dont want the world to see me, i just dont think that theyd understand" --stalking is generally not looked highly upon but he feels that what he has with the girl is real. Plus the music video has him watching people from a tower. |
Cream – Sunshine Of Your Love Lyrics | 18 years ago |
the guitar riff was actually written by Jack Bruce, not Clapton. after Bruce saw Jimi Hendrix play for the first time, he was inspired to write this riff |
The Doors – The End Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i was listening to this song up full blast in my car the other day, and found myself totally engrossed in the song. by the time it came to the crescendo right around the "cmon baby take a chance with us" part, i suddenly felt like i was hearing the voice of the devil coming through jim morrison...it creeped me out |
The Who – So Sad About Us Lyrics | 18 years ago |

Super Furry Animals – Psyclone! Lyrics | 18 years ago |
no idea what this song means, but i like it |
George Harrison – All Things Must Pass Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is extremely applicable to everyday life, not just the Beatles breaking up, although that's possibly what it was inspired by. Everything bad comes to an end, it's just a matter of time, so hang in there. |
Wolf Parade – Dinner Bells Lyrics | 18 years ago |
*wishes |
Wolf Parade – Dinner Bells Lyrics | 18 years ago |
eleanor rr, you're right on with that. At the end of this song they play the harmonica, an instrument representing folk music and the pastoral, saying he wish nature was the way it used to be, back in the day |
Editors – Munich Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i think this song has to be referring to the genocide of the Nazis. even the tone of this song is a little creepy and scewed, like something's not quite right. if the band titled the song 'munich' for no reason, it still fits perfectly. |
The Who – Love, Reign O'er Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
ok nevermind see number nine's comment above |
Afghan Whigs – Faded Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song sounds like aerosmith to me for some reason, but yeah i really like it, good shit |
The Beatles – Long, Long, Long Lyrics | 18 years ago |
if it's possible for a beatles' song to be underrated, this one is. the lyrics are sung with a lot of emotion, which i love |
The Beta Band – Dog's Got A Bone Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i love this song, for some reason. it's an essential part of their great album "the 3 ep's" |
The Beta Band – Needles In My Eyes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
One of my all-time favorite songs, whenever i'm in a semi-depressing or reflective mood, this song is the first one i play. |
Bob Dylan – Sad Eyed Lady of the Lowlands Lyrics | 18 years ago |
If I can find a girl my age that i'm attracted to, that appreciates this song, i'm gonna marry her. Bob Dylan is a poet more than a musician. If anyone says that he has a bad voice or is a bad musician, tell them that his music isn't supposed to sound good necessarily. Not all poetry sounds amazing on the ears. The main point of them is to get a certain feeling across to the listener. In this song, the listener is able to pick up his exact feeling on his lover. Although it may seem monotonous to some listeners, this length is what it takes for him to get his point across about his love. A four minute song would not nearly reveal his true feelings. |
The Magic Numbers – Love Me Like You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
extemely catchy song, this song should have alot more publicity and exposure to the pop world |
My Morning Jacket – Golden Lyrics | 18 years ago |
oh and it's nothing like wanted dead or alive, if you want something to compare it to, think Neil Young's Harvest Moon or Heart of Gold. |
My Morning Jacket – Golden Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I'm surprised this song has not been more exposed, it's one of the most touching, reflective songs i've ever heard, and on my top 100 of best songs of all time, which is a pretty damn hard list to break into. |
The Who – My Generation Lyrics | 18 years ago |
the live at leeds medley that begins with this song is my favorite "song" of all time |
Babyshambles – Albion Lyrics | 18 years ago |
the guitar that plays right after the chorus is beautiful |
Counting Crows – Holiday In Spain Lyrics | 18 years ago |
this song is an orgasm in the ears |
The Kinks – Waterloo Sunset Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think "Waterloo Sunset" refers to that peaceful place you go into in order to escape the world. Equitable to your "happy place" like in Billy Madison or the "garden" in Andrew Marvell's poem. My little brother described this song by saying "It sounds like a smoothie" which i think is a perfect description. |
Lucero – That Much Further West Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i love songs like this, that have so much emotion in them |
The Who – Love, Reign O'er Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song moves me like none other. In the album Quadrophenia, each of the members of the Who has their own recurring theme that pops up every now and then. I can't remember John's, but I know Roger's is Dr. Jimmy and pretty sure Keith's is Bell Boy. This is Pete's. |
Andrew Bird – Masterfade Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I believe this song is about a girl who looks at everything in her relationship as a figure, that she tries to calculate and make sense of. She views her relationship purely practically. The male narrator says he could have played her if he wanted to "my finger's on the masterfade." |
