i think the song pertains to the vietnam war when US soldiers were given orders to annihalate entire viatnamese villages by killing everyone including women and children. they also burned down everything. sadly, the villages were innocent and were full of mainly working class people that had no involvement in the war whatsoever.
the soliders knew that what they were doing was wrong, but were just following orders. maybe that's also the point of the title, top ranking. because the top rank gave the orders for the soliders to commit such horrific crimes.
i think blonde redhead are referencing this huge mistake in history. |

i think personally that this song is about wanting to be the best and to exceed even the highest of expectations but being brought down and secured as "average" at everything that you do.
so she sings for people to lower her down, secure her at the bottom and pin her in because she can't do anything better than dream of being the greatest.
i think that this song is "the greatest" i love the way that she sings it and the piano in the background. it's a wonderful song most definitely the best i've heard from her. |

i love the way that he sings the last line and the sort of emphasis he puts on "bright eyes" in the end. there is definitely a lot of meaning in this song, and many themes. just the fact that he used the poem 'annabel lee' is enough to make a wonderful song. i like all of your interpretations, especially pvtnerd and autosomes because that's basically what i was thinking. it's wonderful how conor can make us all think. he's a wonderful poet himself. |

the meaning is obvious in the lyrics.
there is a girl that is lovely in everything that she is and does, even just knowing her is loving her.the narrator of the song worships her. he believes that he can make her really happy and show her all of the wonderful things that she is, but she doesn't even see him. But he doesn't give up hope in saying that "someday she will see".
the beat and melody are wonderful. another beautiful love song by the beatles. this one is probably one of my favorites. |

i was thinking of another phrase in the unbearable lightness of being.
"Der schwer gefasste Entschluss" which means the difficult/heavy resolution in english. It was on the same page as "Es muss sein" was when Tomas was coming back into Prague.

i've read the unbearable lightness of being. it's my favorite book of all time. "the difficult/heavy resolution" is what "es muss sein" translates to in english. it was first used by beethoven for one of his compositions i do believe. it's a great song. |

I feel such sadness about myself when I listen to this song. I feel as if my life is a dream compared to hers. And I feel guilt knowing that I handle my easy life so much worse than what she is handling hers. This song gives me so many chills and feelings. It is my favorite song and yet I can't listen to it in succession more than 2 times or I feel myself falling into the song and almost crying from the emotion in every word that Conor sings.
Overall the passion and feeling in this song is way too much to listen to without thinking about it and developing an image of Amy in your head. I don't know if Conor wrote this about a girl he once knew but if he did, she has one of the most beautiful and emotionally painful songs in the world written about her. It makes me sick just thinking about it. Conor goes past the level of genius for this one. |
