Personally, I think this song is about a dead lover he can no longer 'dance' with. His living body is keeping him caged here on earth. If he were only dead they could dance in an afterlife.
Throughout the song he seems rather dispirited and melancholy, though he seems to understand that she will always be with him, in his head or in his heart, hence, his mind holds the key. He doesn’t feel good about it, though. |

The first verse seems to be about beng willing to take the risk of falling in love, but I'm not sure how that fits with the rest of the song. Either way, it is very peacefull and can always calm me down when no matter how I feel. |

I love the sparse, bare feeling of the instruments on this one, they really let his voice carry the song along and don't get in the way of the emotional intensity. And his voice is... nothing short of breathtaking. |

This song is, to me, about the end of a relationship, and a man's attempt to erase a woman from his life, including his memory.
His 'Red Alibi,' fire, is burning her out of his life, erasing her tracks..
I also think the allusion to her as a criminal is a way of communicating how he thinks she has done wrongs to him. |

To say that the song is about the war seems like a bit of a stretch to me.
I thought the song was much more obviously about the end of a relationship, not necessarily romantic, though.
I think clues like the 'We' references make it sound like perhaps a friend betrayed them in some way.
I also think the references to destruction and violence are merely metaphorical, a way to portray his mental anguish in more vivid and real way. |
