Radiohead – Black Star Lyrics 18 years ago
coming from my point of view and my own personal experiences, for anyone who's been in any type of relationship that in the end just doesn't work out, knows that it sucks. so much time, so much emotion, so much of your everything is devouted to something that can be something so powerful, but when it turns out that either your not the person you thought you were or your girlfriend isn't who you thought she was, it fuckin suck....so after all that time, i think this song is a bout a troubled relationship, where the girl had problems in which her bf couldn't relate to or help her out with, and eventually, ultimatelty, by just the way things roll out, he has to leave her.

now the last stanza hurts. me. this person in the song.
he is blank, after breaking up, or losing feelings, he is void traveling through space emotionless. then there;s that jolt or that born again feeling you get when you see a girl who looks anywhere close to the girl youve been close to for so long. its like you see her face everywhere. these feelings come back.

in the end of the end, what does it come to, what light begins to shine on you, that black star, that negative light, the one that shines at the end of every failed relationship. or bad relationship.

Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 18 years ago
older generation blaming the younger generations for not living up to their beautifully perfect expectations of what the world would become in the future. And it's contagious to agree with the older generation, bringing down our sense of self.
so is it a wonder we young people think about suicide with all this pressure?
Regina says hey who gives a fuck...we tighten our scarves like nooses but not because we want eternal death, we want some recognition and we want to poke fun.
The world we live in now is obsessed with money, we're like thieves rummaging through pages to find ways to make more money, and it's contagious to feel this way, this is the way we were brought up.

Radiohead – There There. (The Boney King of Nowhere.) Lyrics 18 years ago
dead elephant footsteps is probably the funniest best way to hear and think of the drum beat in this song. that's awesome. refer to speed of dark.

so i thought about it, and i still have no idea what this song means.
i have an interpretation of the video though. i think the video is about a dude who is insanely paranoid and depressed, maybe even a little crazy.
fuck it i have no idea
i was gonna say that the video portrays the everyday easy task of getting up in one's own house and going and getting your jacket and shoes. then leaving your house to go outside into the world.
here's what i think, it starts off with thom in a peaceful field. then he looks into the forest and walks in where it is dark and scary. much like the comfort of one's own home, a person who is antisocial and afraid struggles to leave his own house, but the only way to live and learn is to get outside. so he nervously and apathetically steps into the forest. the whole video is set up in stop and go editing (i think that's the correct term) and it gives a sense of nervousness. when thom is walking through the forest it looks almost like he's twitching, but it's just the effect from the editing.
then he sees the mice smoking their pipes, the frog on a bike, the rabits eating dinner together and the wedding of cats. So, maybe these are the happy thoughts this guy puts into his head before he's about to embark on his journey outside. or maybe he has a cat, a frog, a mouse and a rabbit. then he sees his jacket and his shoes, glowing. once he gets his shoes and jacket on, there's the confidence. look i got my outside attire on, now there's now stopping me. im ready to go outside. So he's happy. Then he sees the crowes. The temptations, those that want to keep him in the forest, in his house. so he runs, hoping to get through and triumphantly he escapes the crowes. in his mind he has finally almost made it out the door. BUT, the forest gets him. it grabs his legs, it turns him into a tree, stuck inside, forever. The guy is bound to the comfort of his home. "why so green and lonely" cause he sits inside all day. "just cause you feel it doesnt mean it's there" the forset isnt there, the cat wedding isnt real, but maybe this crazy dude sees these things. or this is equal to how he feels. getting outside into the real world is like getting through a think black forest with scary crowes.

But that is completely out of whack and probably wrong. i think the video has something to with "hail to the thief" maybe...stealing the jacket and shoes from the forest, but i have no idea because some other ideas believe the title has to do with the government and society, which dont seem to fit in this video.

then i hate to say it but maybe "there there" is about a relationship gone awry. or better yet a relationship that was doomed from the start. i hate to think that radiohead writes sappy love songs with little meaning. So who the hell knows what this song means. it beats me.

Radiohead – Climbing Up the Walls Lyrics 18 years ago
I didnt look at the song in this aspect but i can see how your interpretation works.
But the only parts of the song which i think counteract your interpretation are lyrics like "you know we're friends till we die." and the chorus "And either way you turn, I'll be there Open up your skull, I'll be there
Climbing up the walls"
The last thing on Normal society's to do list is befriending crazy people (which you stated in your interpretation, but the song doesn't align with that). You can say how, ya crazy people are still apart of society and "friend" can be used as a metaphor for the human race. but i dont think this is what thom was getting at. This song is scary no doubt. And no offense to the insane brain, but I'm sure it's scary living inside the mind of a schizophrenic (which was my interpretation of the song). So I feel that a band as musically talented and thought provoked as radiohead, would maybe put an uplifting or edgy sound to their music. Especially if the song was about how society doesn't give our crazy population a chance. The music is what it's all about, and the drums are no doubt dreary, the guitar solo shrieking, thoms voice haunting and agonizing. this song is meant to be scary and meant to be.... crazy. and from the chorus, everywhere you turn ill be there, open up your skull, ill be there, climbing up the walls. this is undoubtedly crazy talk, and probably (i wouldnt know) the way a mad person thinks. When you picture someone Climbing up the walls you see someone paranoid, confused, lost and angry. And either way you turn ill be there...either way you look, yourself is there. schizophrenics are afraid of everything, and have split personalities. so the whole song is like the monster's voice antagonizing the person's voice...inside himself.

so who knows, you could be right, i could be right, or we could both be wrong...which is most likely the case. i just really think the song is about the inside of a schizophrenic person's mind and not about societies removal of crazy people, who on the inside are really just good people who need a little more time to get to know.
get at it. lets hear what ya think.

Radiohead – There There. (The Boney King of Nowhere.) Lyrics 18 years ago
i think the video does some justice to the true meaning of the song. everyone should check it out.

beautiful song, i read somewhere that thom cried when he heard the album's final cut of the song.

"there there" is a soothing, comforting thing to say, the whole song might have to do with uncomfortablness of life and with oneself. alot of the times people believe things, hear things, interpret things in ways that arent' true, in fear or anticipation. i think this song has something to do with that. "just because you feel it doesn't mean it's there" not everything you believe is true is actually true. not everything you believe is happening around is you is really happening. buyt there's really no one else who can see things for you because everyone sees things in a different light.

if you see the video, thom is walking nervously through a thick forest, encountering tiny mice smoking
pipes inside a tree, a frog riding a bicycle, a big family of rabbits eating dinner, and then a cat wedding. Then he stumbles upoin a clearing where there is a glowing blaser and a hidden pair of shoes on a tree. almost tempting. when he tries on the shoes and the blaser (steals them from the forest) he notices a group of black crowes and they chase after him. he is running away, and right when he's about to be pecked to death by the crowes his shoes glow he runs faster and gets away. with a face of delight, you finally see a smile on thom's face. then ironically, when he finally thinks he's away, his shoes fall off and roots grow around his feet,, he is caught by the forest and he grows into a tree. and the crowes land on his branches as you see his shrieking face inside the bark of the tree. the end.
hail to the thief! he steals the blaser, the nice shoes tries to run away and bam right when he thinks he's lost the crowes, the forest catches him.
i dont know where i was going with this it's late
ill finish up tomorow
i need to sleep on it
but basically, due to the video, i dont think it has anything to do with a love story. too many love songs out their anyway.

Radiohead – A Wolf at the Door (It Girl. Rag Doll) Lyrics 18 years ago
woo im not even gonna attempt to think about what this song means right now, but i will some other time. it's to easy to just say this song is simply about a gangster. thom writes poetry, poetry is deep. there's always more to what you think is true. for all we know this song could be about a sunday in abingdon when thom watched the three little pigs on tv and got angry when he related the big bad wolf to the government. who knows. i like everyones ideas though. this song fucking sweet, and a great way to end a great album, and a great way to srart off radiohead's rapping debut (i think correct me if im wrong, idk any other songs thom has rapped on before) sweet

Radiohead – Climbing Up the Walls Lyrics 18 years ago
this song means to me, a different meaning than everyone elses because it is my own interpretation. Everyone takes a song and twists it around their own thoughtprocess their own feelings yada yada yada. i think it is too easy to believe this song is merely about the mental hospital that thom worked at because that explanation is too set in stone. too easy. Thom probably got the idea for the song from the hospital, but I believe their is a deeper meaning. whether this song is about thom or patients at the hospital, or just the general fucked up person in conflict with themselves, i don't know. this song is definitely about a person who is paranoid and afraid.
There are two concsious selves, the I and the me. The "me" is that side of you who lives through the eyes of other people. basically the person you propose to everyone else. The person you want to be by forming to society and norms. Then the "I" is that in which you perceive yourself or the true person inside of you. Sort of like The conversation inside your head that no one else hears but you. A person who's all fucked up in this region has some problems. Theyre crazy.
This song might be about a schizophrenic.
When you look at the lyrics think about the nature of the music and since there are alot of shizo's in mental hospital, it could make some sense.
"i am the key to the lock inside your house
that keeps your toys in the basement
and if you get too far inside
you'll only see my reflection"
it's as if. when the person in this song, he gets away from the outside world, je "holds the key" to the house and locks it so no one can see inside. now the real person is revealed. when they look too far inside themselves they release a monster.
"best with the covers up" fear
"pick in the ice" chipping away at oneself
"do not cry out or hit the alarm, you know we're friends till we die" save yourself from freaking out, I'm always going to be around. It's like a conversation between two people, one who's afraid and one who is antagonizing. But friends till we die implies he will suffer between these two conscious selves till he dies. You can either be a friend to yourself or hate yourself, be depressed. Well no matter what, the self you perceive is with you till the end. it's almost a taunt or a
threat. friends for life!
Then comes the chorus "open up your skull" as if the person is performing brain surgery on themself and "climbing up the walls" around themself, going crazy trying to find a way out. this defines the essence of the song, this person is going crazy. you picture someone climbing up the walls, you picture exorcist scary shit. This guy is in deep shit with himself to the point he is freaking himself out enough to climb around walls, maybe not literally, but figuratively. still fucked.

"Fifteen blows to your mind" not sure about the signifigance of 15 but blows to your mind, it's like the "I" is beating at the "me", the monster inside themself is beating away at the person in their mind.
then "lock the kids up safe tonight Shut the eyes in the cupboard
I've got the smile of a local man
Who's got the loneliest feeling"
again they lock themself inside, away from everything, safe away from the outside world. Try to go to sleep.
On the outside he has the "smile of a local man", meaning he seems an average man like everyone else around, but he has the "loneliest feeling" either because of the problem inside himself that leaves him feeling alone. Either because he can't be his true self the "I" or because he's so afraid. The sad part about the song is that this guy isnt all that crazy because he's actually lonely and sad about his problem. And everybody needs other people to live and be happy. It's crazy how paranoid people can see things or feel things that arent real just because of sucj a low self confidence and fear of living. It reminds me of "There There" Just because you feel it doesn't mean it's there. It seems to me the dude in this song is afraid, paranoid, of things that arent real. there's definitely an inner conflict going on, but sometimes he's just gotta relax. convince himself the monster isnt real and stop climbing up the walls.
This song is meant to be scary and it sure dpes it's job to the tee. Who knows what the hell it means, this is how i took it. A schizo, a lonely guy, a confused guy, a paranoid and afraid guy, who is climbing up the walls inside himself looking for answers trying to get away.
At this point ive written too mucj, made no sense and im going to bed.
i love radiohead.
i love this song.
