The Mountain Goats – Lion's Teeth Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the line "everyone is screaming, I am dreaming of you." Wonder if the you is a friend, girlfriend in his life that he used as an escape from the pain at home. Just a wild guess, at any rate really amazing song.

The Mountain Goats – Magpie Lyrics 18 years ago
Yeah, I get what this song means to the artist, especially in context of the whole album. This is really one of those few songs on the album that you can relate to your own life (most of them very explicitly deal with his step father), but this song the magpie can represent any negative force in your life you try to avoid or opress. Don't get me wrong about this album though, it is brilliant.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Bed Is For Sleeping Lyrics 18 years ago
Oh this song is really beautiful, fantastic harmonies!! The purest love, the completely giving love, and then the rejection. Agh!! Brilliant!

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – I See A Darkness Lyrics 18 years ago
I really saw this song as a man whose constantly plagued with the thoughts of suicide. He loves life 'you know I have a love, a love for everyone I know, and you know I have a drive, to live I won't let go', but then he goes on to talk about the 'opposition'. The darkness that comes with these thoughts he feels can only erased by this friend. This song completely sets the tone of the whole cd (hence the name of the cd), Another Day Full of Dread, Black, Minor Place, these are all songs dealing with the difficulties in living. Love this song, love the cd.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Death To Everyone Lyrics 18 years ago
I love the 'our own god bottle s'within reach' bit. Sort of reminds me of Marx (Religion is the opium of the people), the idea of humanity doing whatever it needs to do to live life despite that death is always approaching. Love the song, but don't listen to it when you are on the down.

Bonnie 'Prince' Billy – Blood Embrace Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this band usually, but not such a fan of this song. I don't know what it is exactly, maybe it just holds no relavence to my life. I don't know, thoughts?

Regina Spektor – Chemo Limo Lyrics 18 years ago
It is amazing how I listened to this song a million times and never thought about cancer (rather stupid, I realize, especially because the title is CHEMO limo), I think I was just so entranced with the beautiful piano, and her voice is amazing. So I am relistening to this song and it is....wow.

Regina Spektor – Poor Little Rich Boy Lyrics 18 years ago
This song completely reminds me of the Nellie McKay song, the image of the new pretentious intellectual youth. So being and 19 year old college student I find myself slipping into this stereotype now and again. Especially in the line 'You’re reading Fitzgerald, you’re reading Hemmingway
They’re both super smart and drinking in the cafés'.

Regina Spektor – Us Lyrics 18 years ago
"we wear our scarves, but not because we want eternal sleep." Somehow she always plays with these suicidal images (carbon monoxide I am thinking of mainly), and yet fills her music so full of life. I would have to agree, she is a talent unlike any other female vocalist today. She has a slightly Mirah feel, and every once and a while reminds me of Nellie McKay, but mostly it's completely unique. Love it, especially this song.

The Books – A Little Longing Goes Away Lyrics 18 years ago
'Our minds are empty, like we're too young to know to smile.' Agh! I put this line above my bed. I hate interpreting The Books, because my opinion of the song changes according to how I am feeling (this really speaks to their brilliance though), but if I were to give it an overriding message it would be the idea that we just need to take a step back from life and enjoy.

The Books – A Dead Fish Gains the Power of Observation Lyrics 18 years ago
Agreed, although the Books always tend to blow my mind. This song in particular kills me because if I am in a terribly dark mood this song transforms into a metaphore for my life, and if I am in a good mood I can just laugh at it. Love, love, love the Books

The Decemberists – Red Right Ankle Lyrics 18 years ago
I would agree that, while I definately see the love in this song, the idea that this song is about the confusion and randomness of life coming full circle to for beauty. Does anyone else ever have a song that they are pretty sure saved their life? I believe that this is one of those songs for me.

The Decemberists – I Was Meant for the Stage Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't know if anyone caught their Picaresque concerts, but they chose to use this song as their encore peice. So brilliantly clever. It began with just Colin on the stage and as the song built more and more of the band joined him. I cried.

The Decemberists – Of Angels and Angles Lyrics 18 years ago
The imagery that Melloy always evokes in his music is brilliant, particularly in the line "There's a purr of a pigeon to break the still of day." With the barren single acoustic guitar you can really feel the idea of one externality breaking through your day. This song has always intrigued me, especially since it really feels so unlike a 'typica' Decemberists song.
