Pete Seeger – Waist Deep in the Big Muddy Lyrics 18 years ago
This antiwar song was written by Pete Seeger in 1963 on a platoon on maneuvers in Louisiana in 1942. In a larger sense, the song became an allegory for the Vietnam War with the "big fool" representing then-president Lyndon Johnson - though one can substitute him with another Texan in the White House with a stay-the-course plan in Iraq...

Eagles – Take It To The Limit Lyrics 18 years ago
Hillary Clinton has this song on her iPod, according to a recent article in the New York Post. What does this say about her? Perhaps this song represents her some sort of a dreamer - "You know I've always been a dreamer" - with ambition for the White House?

Wyclef Jean – Diallo Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is a reference to the shooting of Amadou Diallo, who was an African immigrant who was shot and killed by four undercover NYPD officers in 1999; they fired 41 shots. The "Biko" reference is Steven Biko, an anti-apartheid activist in South Africa in the 1960s who was supposedly killed by the police in 1977.

Orleans – Still The One Lyrics 18 years ago
George W. Bush used this song as a theme song for his 2004 re-election campaign. The Bush campaign was forced to stop because they failed to obtain permission from the copyright owner, songwriter John Hall. Hall also supported Bush's opponent, John Kerry. In September 2005, the band offered Senator Bill Nelson (D-Florida) to use the song for his re-election bid against Katherine Harris, the Republican secretary of state who helped deliver Florida to George W. Bush in 2000. This song would be a good campaign theme song for an incumbent running for re-election and reminds me of Fleetwood Mac's "Dont Stop" since both evoke happy feelings.

Liz Phair – H.W.C. Lyrics 18 years ago
The Dorian Gray reference is to the character of Dorian Gray by Oscar Wilde in The Picture of Dorian Gray. In the novel, Gray's portrait ages, while Gray himself appears to remain perpetually youthful.

She is singing to an unknown male and the words "So hot, so sweet, so whet my appetite" clearly refers to the singer's desire for "hot white come". It is believed by some cultures that semen has beneficial qualities when applied to the skin. Also, there was a study done in 2002 at the State University of New York in Albany aruging that hormones in semen may help to ease female depression - the lyrics "I am lookin' good and I'm feelin' nice" may highlight post-orgasmic happiness.

The Rolling Stones – Angie Lyrics 18 years ago
This song was the campaign theme song to Angela Merkel when she ran for chancellor of Germany in 2005. The lyrics seem unusual for a political candidate to use in a theme song to rally voters: "Angie, you're beautiful, but ain't it time we said good-bye?" and "With no loving in our souls and no money in our coats / You can't say we're satisfied." Also, the Stones didn't grant permission to Merkel to use the song. Merkel later won.

Jxl – A Little Less Conversation (Jxl vs Elvis) Lyrics 18 years ago
This song was Howard Dean's campaign theme song for his failed 2004 presidential campaign. It, like his campaign, represented his outsider frustration with the Democrats and Republicans in the Beltway establishment - "A little less conversation, a little more action please" and "A little more bite and a little less bark". He is frustrated with the Bush administration and the Republicans - "All this aggravation ain't satisfactioning me". Finally, the song also highlights Dean's theme of taking back the country from the Bush administration - "Come on baby I'm tired of talking / Grab your coat and let's start walking."
