4th and 5th refer specifically to the chords played in the song. The entire verse though is probably a metaphor.

The Gaslight Anthem – National Anthem Lyrics 11 years ago
Reminds me of this from Nietzsche: "Where has God gone?" he cried. "I shall tell you. We have killed him - you and I. We are his murderers. But how have we done this? How were we able to drink up the sea? Who gave us the sponge to wipe away the entire horizon? What did we do when we unchained the earth from its sun? Whither is it moving now? Whither are we moving now? Away from all suns? Are we not perpetually falling? Backward, sideward, forward, in all directions? Is there any up or down left? Are we not straying as through an infinite nothing? Do we not feel the breath of empty space? Has it not become colder? Is it not more and more night coming on all the time? Must not lanterns be lit in the morning? Do we not hear anything yet of the noise of the gravediggers who are burying God? Do we not smell anything yet of God's decomposition? Gods too decompose. God is dead. God remains dead. And we have killed him. How shall we, murderers of all murderers, console ourselves? That which was the holiest and mightiest of all that the world has yet possessed has bled to death under our knives. Who will wipe this blood off us? With what water could we purify ourselves?"

John Lennon – Imagine Lyrics 11 years ago
This is the song that got Lennon killed ... it can be interpreted so many ways and at first glance it seems almost juvenile and cynical for someone who made millions, made his band into a religion and who was celebrated as one of the best and brightest of the Queen's subjects to write a song disparaging wealth, religion and nationality.

There are the people who accuse Lennon of being a Communist, atheist and anarchist and then those like his killer who accused him of simply being a phony and none of those things. And then there are those who take him word for word who think this is his way of telling everybody how to live in peace.

Key word: imagine.

The lyrics say to imagine a world where our differences - religion, nationality, social class - do not divide the human race into warring factions. There may or may not be a heaven or hell, and I doubt John expected everyone to trash their religion, country and possessions, but just imagine for one moment that those things didn't come between people. That instead of presidents and dictators deciding policy, diplomacy was achieved by a fruit vender on the streets of Tehran (Iran) and a window washer in Manhattan (US).

No one would be building bombs, flinging around rhetoric in the news and announcing to the world that war is only six months away.

Hootie & the Blowfish – Time Lyrics 11 years ago
"Time" is a very deep and thoughtful song. You hear it on the radio all the time and it kind of cheapens it but here's a shocker.

Change most references to "time" to "God" and you will see what Darius Rucker really means to say in this song. It doesn't make a lot of sense to say you don't believe in time when making such a laundry list of things that are going wrong every day in the world and in one's personal life ... but a lot more sense to say you don't believe in God after all that.

Where do you get deist from? A deist god is one who creates the universe and then either dies by "becoming" the universe or doesn't care about it at all. If he didn't care or wish to intervene, why would he be watching us?

Bette Midler – From A Distance Lyrics 14 years ago
All you folks criticizing this song as "anti-American" and "Communist" need to chill. In 1991, Soviet Communism had drawn its last breath and Russia was becoming democratized. America was still viewed positively by most people around the world. We thought we were a decade or two away from solving the problems of famine and disease. At the time it had been nearly two decades since America's last war.

So Operation Desert Storm (the First Gulf War) was kind of a shock to most of us Gen X/Y kids. That's right, we actually thought America going to war was a BAD thing. Back then we weren't so desensitized by violent video games and first person shooters with realistic graphics. Watching the anti-aircraft tracer rounds shooting at our planes, bombs blowing up Iraqi civilians and reading stories about our troops being shot at with Scud missiles actually bothered us. America was supposed to be defined by its prosperity and its moral example, not by the wars she fought or her enemies.

This was THE anti-war song of the 1990s. And it still stands now. If you grew up under Bush II, you might have some trouble understanding the mentality, but trust me, we were all peace-loving "hippies" and "traitors"(by the neocon definition) back then. It was simply called believing in a better future. Gotta wonder where we went so wrong!

The Vapors – Turning Japanese Lyrics 14 years ago
I like that the singer said it's a love song but it has so many double meanings. Given the tempo, the excessive display of "swords" and common stereotypes about Japanese people in the video, I'm sure the band's publicists wanted us to think the song was just about wanking. The original meaning though ... it's probably about a girl he had a bad crush on in high school who went into modeling. She's now featured in magazines and he's fascinated with her to the point of being otaku. Now he's on the road touring and doing concerts but still obsessed and she's the only one he wants. His other band members are weirded out because of all the typical rock star things he won't allow himself to do (partying, drinking, drugs, groupies) for her sake.

Uno, dos, tres, catorce (1, 2, 3, 14) does not refer to U2's albums. You have to remember they do make biblical references ... and I think it's far from a coincidence that
the 1st testament
the 2nd book
the 3rd chapter, and
the 14th verse happens to be, "And God said unto Moses, I AM THAT I AM: and he said, Thus shalt thou say unto the children of Israel, I AM hath sent me unto you."

Outlandish – Look into my eyes Lyrics 15 years ago
This is the song that made me realize I was only getting one side of the story about Israel and Palestine. It's Outlandish's take on a poem by a Palestinian girl named Gihad Ali, with very few changes except to add in a chorus and a few extra years to the tally. It tells the story straight to us Americans in music because the television networks and newspapers here would never let you know what's really happening.

It's really painful to listen to. As a human being I can't help but feel the anguish of the narrator of the poem. As a Christian I am outraged that the church in America typically does nothing but cheer on the Israeli military. Once I remember going into Sunday worship at my old church and seeing an Israeli flag in the sanctuary next to the American flag. I remember how angry I felt. America is my country and I only want the AMERICAN flag in my church.

Switchfoot – Ammunition Lyrics 16 years ago
I think this song is about our parents getting us to fight their battles over morality.

"We're the issue ... I have no generation."

This says a lot. This is about how (for those of us who are Christians) we are our parents' weapons against things like gay marriage and abortion. They've turned us into their mouthpieces, so we kind of don't exist. This song says we should take a second to think.

"Look what a mess we made of love."

That says a lot about the church today. Saying love the sinner hate the sin, then not only loving the sin but hating the "sinners" who do it more than you do. A theology that is about condemnation and fighting moral battles in other people's lives is simply bankrupt - we should be fighting those battles in our own lives.

Switchfoot – Meant To Live Lyrics 16 years ago
My idea is that this song is about Generation Y and its emergence in America. Key phrase: "We were more than the wars of our fathers."

Gen Y and every generation after it are dealing with the culture war preceded by the Moral Majority in the 1980s, the failed policies of the Bush Administration, etc. where adults are asking us all to take sides and fight for their idea of morality or lose to the devil. This song speaks against that sentiment.

"We were meant to live for so much more!" Yes, this means to live for God, as this is a Christian band, but it also means that we have our own things to live for. We have different ideas about the world, a different approach to morality even. We watch parents get divorced over stupid stuff, and see politicians ruin our future - we want to live for something greater than our parents did. They wanted us to have a better future than they did - and sometimes that takes going in our own direction to fulfill their dreams for us.

Alabama – Song Of The South Lyrics 16 years ago
Song, song of the south
Sweet potato pie and I shut my mouth
Gone, gone with the wind
There ain't nobody looking back again

}}Basically the song is a statement about the historical South after the War Between the States

Cotton on the roadside, cotton in the ditch
We all picked the cotton but we never got rich
Daddy was a veteran, a southern democrat
They oughta get a rich man to vote like that

}}They were sharecroppers in the 1920s meaning they lived on land they didn't own (they leased the land from landowners), picking cotton for which they would never profit. Wages were low then and sharecropping was one of the worst occupations. His father was probably a World War I veteran and a proud patriotic American ... but believed that the country owed him something in return. Southern democrats were populists who were mostly favored by poor whites. Think of John Edwards style politics in an era where segregation was still around. Yankees, mostly Republicans at the time, were in the majority and did not support the common folk in the south. Yankees disdained poor southern whites, having basically the same opinion back then as they do today. (Metro vs. Retro, according to a liberal San Francisco columnist.)

Well somebody told us Wall Street fell
But we were so poor that we couldn't tell
Cotton was short and the weeds were tall
But Mr. Roosevelt's a-gonna save us all

}}Now we're in the 1930s. The Great Depression had little effect on poor southerners. In fact a lot were excited at the prospect of Northerners losing financial power over the South. Roosevelt was like a messiah though. He made nearly unbelievable promises to the American people. He promised not just to make it so that the rich would recover their wealth, but also that the poor could rise in the ranks and become more affluent. He called this the New Deal.

Well momma got sick and daddy got down
The county got the farm and they moved to town
Pappa got a job with the TVA
He bought a washing machine and then a Chevrolet

}}His father had to pay for a doctor, meaning that he skipped one too many lease payments. So they lost their rights to the land they already didn't have. They moved into the town where jobs were available.

The 1940s was the era in American history when we came the closest to Socialism. The TVA was one of the largest public works projects of the time, employing hundreds of thousands of men for the construction of dams, bridges, roads, and power plants. It still exists today even. (What we also have today is the still-building $9 trillion national debt!) However, it jump-started the economy, and a lot of Americans became more affluent - hence the washing machine and the Chevrolet part. They sacrificed a lot for the war effort though - including the rationing of food and gas.

So here we are in the 1940s, and the New South is emerging. New Deal "socialism" benefited the South more than any other region of the country. Roosevelt has united the South and the North in a way Presidents Lincoln and Johnson never could with their fascist military dictatorships.

The singer isn't talking about the end of the Old South in a completely negative way. He's proud of his family being from the Old South, but he acknowledges that the New South is probably a better time and place to live (notice the pleasant tone when he sings "he bought a washin' machine / and then a Chevrolet").

Amazing song, probably the one I like most from Alabama.

Alice in Chains – Man In The Box Lyrics 16 years ago
Waaaait ... obviously from AIC's other lyrics they don't take much liking to the faith of Christ, and this is probably no different.

But the lyrics doesn't make sense if you take them literally: If you believe Jesus is dead, how can you sanely tell him to deny his maker? After all, "dead" people can't talk. If you believe Jesus is Lord and that he lives, then technically he has no maker, so again, the lyrics make no sense. If you believe his "maker" or father was actually Joseph or some other man, then that makes sense, but then, Jesus would have already denied his maker because he claimed God as his Father.

So I'm left to believe one thing. AIC was high when they wrote the song.

Nickelback – If Everyone Cared Lyrics 17 years ago
I don't think he's saying that he is perfect here.

The song has distinct religious undertones. You'd have to be stupid not to recognize the implication of nobody dying. The use of the word "amen" (= let it be so) and "I'm alive" would add some credit to that view. Even though "God" is not mentioned at all, it's implied.

A lot of people think the early teachings of Jesus were not that the kingdom of heaven is a distant, "afterlife" kind of thing, but something you enter even on this earth. Hence the idea that we never die, if we believe in him and follow his teachings. "If" being the key word. Living like Christ requires that you deny yourself and love people you don't even know. It's the hardest way to live on this earth. Hence the reason why as a Christian, I would never offer the message of Jesus like one offers a dog a new toy. People aren't dogs, and they need to understand what it means to live for utopia. It demands everything, your future, even your soul. There are benefits, but like working a job, to earn money you have to keep at it.

If you set the Christian perspective aside, however, the song rings of the Jewish eschatology of a "messianic age" where there is no one person known as Messiah but rather is all people on earth, learning to love each other.

I happen to believe that there is a person, and that person if Jesus, and that his purpose here and the goal of the song are really one and the same.

Counting Crows – Angels of the Silences Lyrics 17 years ago
"Did you come? Would you lie?
Why'd you leave us 'till we're only good for...
Waiting for you"

While a lot of people would see "did you come" and "would you lie?" and assume that his girl faked it, I see something entirely different. I won't deny that there are a few double entendres in the song, but the meaning of "did you come?" gives itself away in the next lyric, "Why'd You leave us 'till we're only good for waiting for You?"

He's obviously talking about Jesus. To whom else would he appeal? He's talking about feeling guilt for his sins.

If you read more into it, it seems like the speaker in the song is about giving up on the other person. (It's not stated whether it's a girl or a guy, so who knows?)

I agree that you can read more into it like a relationship with God, but there are too many conflicting bits of information to make a judgment like that. So I think it's about a human relationship.

12 Stones – Broken Lyrics 17 years ago
However. Where's the Rule Book that says this and that about being a Christian that I hear nowadays from most people in the church?

I suppose the new 10 commandments will be:

1. I am the Lord thy God, who hath brought thee out of sin and made thee perfectly self-righteous. Thou shalt have no other gods before me, except thine own hypocrisy and ignorance.
2. Thou shalt immerse thyself in the contemporary worship experience. If thou shalt feel the effects of pretty music, debasive preaching and repeated, hypnotic phrases on thy soul, thou shalt claim that as a spiritually transforming experience, and encourage others to do likewise.
3. Thou shalt also condemn any one who shall take my name in vain by using the word "damn." However, thou mayest misuse my name in any other divers wise as thou wilt, including compulsively repeating my name in a prayer.
4. Thou shalt avoid non-Christian gatherings such as Ozzfest and the Warped Tour due to the anti-Christian spirit-gravitational properties of non-believers.
5. Thou shalt exalt thy virginity above the heavens, and wear rings to prove that thou art dedicated to thy future spouse. Thy virginity is more precious than the cross of Christ, saith the Lord thy God.
6. Thou shalt not masturbate. (If thou shalt masturbate, thou shalt talk about it in disgust, consider thyself unworthy of me, and talk down about other Christians who are not as spiritual as thee.)
7. Thou shalt not drink. If thou shalt drink, it shall be as part of the Lord's Supper. (But even then, I really prefer grape juice, so that thou art not poisoned by the smallest bit of alcohol.)
8. Thou shalt not cuss. If another Christian uttereth a swear word in thy presence, thou hast the immediate authority to judge that person's faith now and at any time in the future. Such a one thou mayest never accept as a true brother or sister in Christ.
9. Thou shalt not shirk any trend that befalls the church at large. Each popular author must be given six months to three years' tenure as thy spiritual guardian, to be relinquished as soon as the next popular book cometh off the market.
10. Thou shalt despise the King James Version of the Bible, saying that it is ten times as inaccurate as the divers translations now available in the English language.

(If you haven't figured out by now, these are completely sarcastic and unbiblical.)

12 Stones – Broken Lyrics 17 years ago
i question why you chose to die
when you knew your truth i would deny
you look at me
the tears begin to fall
and all in all faith is blind
but i fail time after time
daily in my sin i take your life

"I question why you CHOSE TO DIE"

Jesus could have just come out and said anytime that he was not the prophecied (see the book of Daniel) "Son of man" aka Son of God, during his trial, and would have immediately been set free.

"When you knew your truth I would deny
You look at me
The tears begin to fall"

If you saw the movie the Passion of the Christ ... you should have paid closer attention to the first scene. That is where Jesus faces his real agony. The Bible says he was so upset that the blood vessels in his forehead burst and his sweat was mixed with blood. He could have disobeyed God at that moment, and ran away. But then even the people who would have believed in him would still face the guilt of our sins, and no one would be allowed to enter God's presence for eternity.

"and all in all faith is blind
but i fail time after time"

Faith in someone you've never seen, in a place you've never been, is surprisingly hard to keep. Hence the reason why there are so many atheists in the world.

"Daily in my sin I take your life"

I don't think the Bible says anything about that. I don't believe in a continuously dying Christ, as he is portrayed in the Catholic Mass, but rather in a living Christ, who has already died and covered our sins. We cannot take any more of his life than he has already given away, so, this line is not "theologically correct." It does, however, shed some light on the songwriter's state of mind. To be that upset about your sins that you would say that you are taking Jesus' life all over again ... I've felt that way before. I also confessed my sinfulness to God and prayed for Jesus to save me, and I won't lie, I actually felt cleansed by that act, like a burden was lifted off of my shoulders.

Responding to azwrath's comment:

I don't think Christians should try to be liked. It's never worked for me. Eventually what you believe will always get in the way between you and the world, and you will be revealed as a true believer ... IF you really are.

As far as the song, it is clearly an invocation to follow Jesus. Anyone who knows the New Testament should understand these things. Seeing the self-seeking part of the world as hollow and temporary, "I deny myself" and "being more like you" ... and above all, "Will you deny me when we meet again," a clear reference to Luke 9:23-27.

Try to apply these words to an everyday situation, for example a romantic relationship, and it is very hard to fit them into place.

How ironic that someone mentioned persecution! The song itself talks about persecution - well, not exactly persecution but ridicule. American Christians are ridiculed far more than they are persecuted. (Hence the line right before "will you deny me," "I try to hide the truth within.")

"So when we see something "Christian" being liked we get excited. Its a victory for our lord and savior."

My point is that if this "Christian" thing is not even understood as being "Christian" but instead interpreted as being entirely secular, how is that a victory for the SPIRITUAL Lord and Savior, Jesus Christ?

I think the reason atheists enjoy 12 stones is because they are honest about faith and doubt and their mistakes. They come off as being very human, by the way. However, they don't directly point to Jesus with their lyrics (except for the song Broken). So you shouldn't "jump" at such a "victory."

How in the world could they have not known they were copying the sex pistols (killfriartuck)?

The beginning sounds too wordy, kind of like the band threw in some big words to sound intelligent.

"I've got responsibility
That is my liability"

If GC had wanted to prove that it's not punk, they've done a swell job of it over the past two albums they've made. I don't listen to them because I think they're punk, anyway. They're just a rock band that knows how to make money off of (pre-)teenage girls by dressing in a way they think is hot, and which used to make some pretty good sounding music.

No comment on the "poser / omg GC IS NOT POSERS THEY ARE PUNK" issue. I'm not that obsessed about the band or about telling off its fans.

No comment on the "they are ripping off the Sex Pistols / omg BENJI IS SO HOTT" issue. The Sex Pistols will always be the Sex Pistols whether anyone copies them or not. "Artists" responding to each other is common in poetry, and it should be common in rock music as well. It helps fuel the exchange of ideas. I take this song as a coming of age song, a taking of responsibility unlike Rotten's "no future" lyric. The band wants to make it on its own now, so they're leaving home and taking responsibility for themselves.

What does this song mean to you?

A: Nothing. It's just mindless pornography inspired by mindless(er) pornography ... what positive thing can I possibly say for a band that gets a song out of watching a sex tape by Par*s H*lton? Yes, that is where the song came from. Buckcherry pretty much wasted a great song on dumbass lyrics. Unless you're punked-up angry, there should be a limit to the number of times your band can say "fuck" in a song.

Yes, the music is great. The rhythm, rapid guitar riffs and the bassline go hand in hand with the theme. It's just the lyrics that make the song sound dumb to me. And the fact that the lead singer is fantasizing about (hold it, I won't even mention her name again, bleeped or otherwise) sure does shine a bad light on the artistic merits of Buckcherry. Seriously, she's not even hot, unless you consider the fact that she's rich in her parents' money!

I'll repeat what the Rock 93.5 DJ guy said about this one, don't know his name but he had a pretty good insight on the meaning of the song: "What guy could not love this song? I mean, he's got one girl in the sack and another on the phone!"

It's obvious that in the phone call he's leading the ex on, trying to get her to cheat with him against her boyfriend ... and it amazes me how so many girls think this song is just SOO sentimental. Face it, girls, this is a valuable insight into how a lot of guys think.

Anti-Flag – Captain Anarchy Lyrics 17 years ago
Anarchy isn't something that can be believed in, it's just a condition where there is no leader determining the rules. Punk isn't about anarchy, but about protesting the "archy" ... because currently, the world isn't ready for anarchy. True, you have some punk songs that seem to celebrate anarchy (and the circle-A is a pretty awesome logo) but most of the kids with spikey hair who rant and rave about anarchy probably wouldn't hesitate to call the cops if they were being assaulted. They would demand justice ... which is consequently what Anti-Flag is about. They protest what they see as injustice around the world. I don't agree with everything they say, but I do know one thing: they are terribly misunderstood as a band!

Live – Selling The Drama Lyrics 17 years ago
and to love: a god
and to fear: a flame
and to burn a crowd that has a name
and to right or wrong
and to meek or strong
it is known, just scream it from the wall

//Here he seems to be stating generalizations about monotheistic religions, especially Christianity but also Islam. (Judaism doesn't really believe in a hell.)

I've willed, I've walked, I've read
I've talked, I know, I know,
I've been here before

hey, now we won't be raped
hey, now we won't be scarred like that

//Not much symbolic significance, he's just saying he's fed up with trying to live in harmony with Christian expectations ... which if you think about it Christianity is essentially a disharmony with the state of things that are, i.e. in Christian theology, a sinful world that works on passion and selfishness, but somehow manages to preserve its own rule, but will be destroyed and remade in the end by God. If you don't feel that God empowers you to live differently, then trying (or being forced to try) to be holy and apart from that sinful world is mentally violating, like rape.

it's the sun that burns
it's the wheel that turns
it's the way we sing that makes 'em dream

"The wheel" is a direct reference to Eastern religions that consider life on earth to be a cycle of reincarnation and reprisal - the karmic wheel. In other words (in Buddhism and Hinduism especially), you're going to get yours, not because of God/s necessarily but because acting out of harmony with nature will cause things to balance themselves out. It's a different way of looking at morality.

and to christ: a cross
and to me: a chair
I will sit and earn the ransom
from up here

I'm a little confused about this part. Someone suggested this means an electric chair. That might be a connotation, not the real meaning though. Christ was crucified because he had a falling out with the religious leaders of his time and spoke against them. Maybe the songwriter sees his own thoughts as a kind of crucifixion, and he's just sitting in a chair and feeling miserable about faith issues, discontent with religion, conviction about sin ... something.

I am a Christian but I'm not going to make this song say what it doesn't. For any other Christians who might try to, it's a wonderful song but it's not preaching the Gospel or anything universally true. It's about the songwriter's personal experiences, not all of which have to do with Christianity.

Stone Sour – Through Glass Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm not sure about the alcoholism or physical abuse, but I noticed a few references and allusions that might be helpful in trying to figure out what this song means.

"I'm looking at you through the glass
Don't know how much time has passed
Oh God it feels like forever ... "

"Through the glass" could be an allusion to 1 Corinthians 13 which is often read at weddings and can also be used referring to one's relationship to God. It has to do with the fact that as imperfect humans, we love imperfectly and know imperfectly too. In other words, we sin, and we forget to think about Him and talk with Him; we take irrational actions and expect Him to look with favor on it. If this is the case, then the "Oh God" might not be just taking His name in vain, but more like a prayer.

Or it might just be a reference to alcoholism; I could be totally wrong about that, depending on whether or not Corey is religious.

"It's the stars that lie to you ... " I thought that was a balatant reference to astrology. Probably in a figurative sense: You think something is going to go great, in other words, like astrology believers would say, it was written in the stars; yet it really wasn't meant to be.

Considering that Corey is married, this song might be him expressing his doubts about the relationship and its future.

Green Day – American Idiot Lyrics 18 years ago
Well yes I've heard some outrageous country stars like Toby Kieth (Courtesy of the Red White and Blue) with their "propoganda," but of course it being country music he got censored on the station I listened to (I'm from down south). And I've heard the "Have You Forgotten" but that was a couple of years ago, and I haven't heard of any pro-Bush songs since then. Not to say country music isn't more toward the right, but you know.

I think the liberal influence in "emo" and "alternative aka manufactured pop-punk" far exceeds that of the country music stars. By the way did anyone notice how this song made it to #1 on the EUROPEAN CHARTS, where everybody is "faggot America" (quoting the song) - they are enamoured with Hollywood and try to be like their depiction of America ... and our rock artists want to make it big in Europe, so they spew liberal propoganda, to make them happy. Hence the reason liberals are compared to Europeans. (And the timid French. I laugh at Chirac saying he'd respond with nuclear warheads if Iran attacked! I bet he'd give Arjeminihad his own country on a platter!)

Green Day is just another example of an American band who made it big and sold its soul to Europe.

At least the Dead Kennedys were honest in their liberalism ... i.e. they didn't sell out to a huge record company and try to make it big overseas, or give the Europeans choice fodder to laugh at Americans over.

Hannah Jane's is the name of a pub of sorts in Columbia, South Carolina where the band formed. Probably a place where Darius liked to go with his female friend in this song.
