This is the song that got Lennon killed ... it can be interpreted so many ways and at first glance it seems almost juvenile and cynical for someone who made millions, made his band into a religion and who was celebrated as one of the best and brightest of the Queen's subjects to write a song disparaging wealth, religion and nationality. There are the people who accuse Lennon of being a Communist, atheist and anarchist and then those like his killer who accused him of simply being a phony and none of those things. And then there are those who take him word for word who think this is his way of telling everybody how to live in peace. Key word: imagine. The lyrics say to imagine a world where our differences - religion, nationality, social class - do not divide the human race into warring factions. There may or may not be a heaven or hell, and I doubt John expected everyone to trash their religion, country and possessions, but just imagine for one moment that those things didn't come between people. That instead of presidents and dictators deciding policy, diplomacy was achieved by a fruit vender on the streets of Tehran (Iran) and a window washer in Manhattan (US). No one would be building bombs, flinging around rhetoric in the news and announcing to the world that war is only six months away. |

Change most references to "time" to "God" and you will see what Darius Rucker really means to say in this song. It doesn't make a lot of sense to say you don't believe in time when making such a laundry list of things that are going wrong every day in the world and in one's personal life ... but a lot more sense to say you don't believe in God after all that. |

All you folks criticizing this song as "anti-American" and "Communist" need to chill. In 1991, Soviet Communism had drawn its last breath and Russia was becoming democratized. America was still viewed positively by most people around the world. We thought we were a decade or two away from solving the problems of famine and disease. At the time it had been nearly two decades since America's last war. So Operation Desert Storm (the First Gulf War) was kind of a shock to most of us Gen X/Y kids. That's right, we actually thought America going to war was a BAD thing. Back then we weren't so desensitized by violent video games and first person shooters with realistic graphics. Watching the anti-aircraft tracer rounds shooting at our planes, bombs blowing up Iraqi civilians and reading stories about our troops being shot at with Scud missiles actually bothered us. America was supposed to be defined by its prosperity and its moral example, not by the wars she fought or her enemies. This was THE anti-war song of the 1990s. And it still stands now. If you grew up under Bush II, you might have some trouble understanding the mentality, but trust me, we were all peace-loving "hippies" and "traitors"(by the neocon definition) back then. It was simply called believing in a better future. Gotta wonder where we went so wrong! |

This is the song that made me realize I was only getting one side of the story about Israel and Palestine. It's Outlandish's take on a poem by a Palestinian girl named Gihad Ali, with very few changes except to add in a chorus and a few extra years to the tally. It tells the story straight to us Americans in music because the television networks and newspapers here would never let you know what's really happening. It's really painful to listen to. As a human being I can't help but feel the anguish of the narrator of the poem. As a Christian I am outraged that the church in America typically does nothing but cheer on the Israeli military. My idea is that this song is about Generation Y and its emergence in America. Key phrase: "We were more than the wars of our fathers." Gen Y and every generation after it are dealing with the culture war preceded by the Moral Majority in the 1980s, the failed policies of the Bush Administration, etc. where adults are asking us all to take sides and fight for their idea of morality or lose to the devil. This song speaks against that sentiment. "We were meant to live for so much more!" Yes, this means to live for God, as this is a Christian band, but it also means that we have our own things to live for. We have different ideas about the world, a different approach to morality even. We watch parents get divorced over stupid stuff, and see politicians ruin our future - we want to live for something greater than our parents did. They wanted us to have a better future than they did - and sometimes that takes going in our own direction to fulfill their dreams for us. |

So they lost their rights to the land they already didn't have. They moved into the town where jobs were available. The 1940s was the era in American history when we came the closest to Socialism. The TVA was one of the largest public works projects of the time, employing hundreds of thousands of men for the construction of dams, bridges, roads, and power plants. It still exists today even. (What we also have today is the still-building $9 trillion national debt!) However, it jump-started the economy, and a lot of Americans became more affluent - hence the washing machine and the Chevrolet part. They sacrificed a lot for the war effort though - including the rationing of food and gas. So here we are in the 1940s, and the New South is emerging. New Deal "socialism" benefited the South more than any other region of the country. Roosevelt has united the South and the North in a way Presidents Lincoln and Johnson never could with their fascist military dictatorships. The singer isn't talking about the end of the Old South in a completely negative way. He's proud of his family being from the Old South, but he acknowledges that the New South is probably a better time and place to live (notice the pleasant tone when he sings "he bought a washin' machine / and then a Chevrolet"). Amazing song, probably the one I like most from Alabama. |

But the lyrics doesn't make sense if you take them literally: If you believe Jesus is dead, how can you sanely tell him to deny his maker? After all, "dead" people can't talk. If you believe Jesus is Lord and that he lives, then technically he has no maker, so again, the lyrics make no sense. If you believe his "maker" or father was actually Joseph or some other man, then that makes sense, but then, Jesus would have already denied his maker because he claimed God as his Father. So I'm left to believe one thing. AIC was high when they wrote the song. |

I don't think he's saying that he is perfect here. The song has distinct religious undertones. You'd have to be stupid not to recognize the implication of nobody dying. The use of the word "amen" (= let it be so) and "I'm alive" would add some credit to that view. Even though "God" is not mentioned at all, it's implied. A lot of people think the early teachings of Jesus were not that the kingdom of heaven is a distant, "afterlife" kind of thing, but something you enter even on this earth. Hence the idea that we never die, if we believe in him and follow his teachings. "If" being the key word. Living like Christ requires that you deny yourself and love people you don't even know. It's the hardest way to live on this earth. Hence the reason why as a Christian, I would never offer the message of Jesus like one offers a dog a new toy. People aren't dogs, and they need to understand what it means to live for utopia. It demands everything, your future, even your soul. There are benefits, but like working a job, to earn money you have to keep at it. If you set the Christian perspective aside, however, the song rings of the Jewish eschatology of a "messianic age" where there is no one person known as Messiah but rather is all people on earth, learning to love each other. I happen to believe that there is a person, and that person if Jesus, and that his purpose here and the goal of the song are really one and the same. |

But then even the people who would have believed in him would still face the guilt of our sins, and no one would be allowed to enter God's presence for eternity. "and all in all faith is blind but i fail time after time" Faith in someone you've never seen, in a place you've never been, is surprisingly hard to keep. Hence the reason why there are so many atheists in the world. "Daily in my sin I take your life" I don't think the Bible says anything about that. I don't believe in a continuously dying Christ, as he is portrayed in the Catholic Mass, but rather in a living Christ, who has already died and covered our sins. We cannot take any more of his life than he has already given away, so, this line is not "theologically correct." It does, however, shed some light on the songwriter's state of mind. To be that upset about your sins that you would say that you are taking Jesus' life all over again ... I've felt that way before. I also confessed my sinfulness to God and prayed for Jesus to save me, and I won't lie, I actually felt cleansed by that act, like a burden was lifted off of my shoulders. |

"I've got responsibility That is my liability" If GC had wanted to prove that it's not punk, they've done a swell job of it over the past two albums they've made. I don't listen to them because I think they're punk, anyway. They're just a rock band that knows how to make money off of (pre-)teenage girls by dressing in a way they think is hot, and which used to make some pretty good sounding music. No comment on the "poser / omg GC IS NOT POSERS THEY ARE PUNK" issue. I'm not that obsessed about the band or about telling off its fans. No comment on the "they are ripping off the Sex Pistols / omg BENJI IS SO HOTT" issue. The Sex Pistols will always be the Sex Pistols whether anyone copies them or not. "Artists" responding to each other is common in poetry, and it should be common in rock music as well. It helps fuel the exchange of ideas. I take this song as a coming of age song, a taking of responsibility unlike Rotten's "no future" lyric. The band wants to make it on its own now, so they're leaving home and taking responsibility for themselves. |

Want to know the truth? I'll repeat what the Rock 93.5 DJ guy said about this one, don't know his name but he had a pretty good insight on the meaning of the song: "What guy could not love this song? I mean, he's got one girl in the sack and another on the phone!" It's obvious that in the phone call he's leading the ex on, trying to get her to cheat with him against her boyfriend ... and it amazes me how so many girls think this song is just SOO sentimental. Even with all the bleeps, I'm amazed that this song gets played on the radio with all the FCC and what not checking under every rug ... Speaking of the FCC though, it does not do if you're living with your Stoic parents to have this song be on the radio right when your alarm clock goes off!!! Any and all members of the band Buck Cherry, please kick yourselves in the nuts before you write a song this awful again. Not that I don't enjoy the subject material ... you just need to find a better, more creative way of complimenting the girl on her skills. |

| Anarchy isn't something that can be believed in, it's just a condition where there is no leader determining the rules. Punk isn't about anarchy, but about protesting the "archy" ... because currently, the world isn't ready for anarchy. True, you have some punk songs that seem to celebrate anarchy (and the circle-A is a pretty awesome logo) but most of the kids with spikey hair who rant and rave about anarchy probably wouldn't hesitate to call the cops if they were being assaulted. They would demand justice ... which is consequently what Anti-Flag is about. They protest what they see as injustice around the world. I don't agree with everything they say, but I do know one thing: they are terribly misunderstood as a band! | |

(Judaism doesn't really believe in a hell.) I've willed, I've walked, I've read I've talked, I know, I know, I've been here before hey, now we won't be raped hey, now we won't be scarred like that //Not much symbolic significance, he's just saying he's fed up with trying to live in harmony with Christian expectations ... which if you think about it Christianity is essentially a disharmony with the state of things that are, i.e. in Christian theology, a sinful world that works on passion and selfishness, but somehow manages to preserve its own rule, but will be destroyed and remade in the end by God. If you don't feel that God empowers you to live differently, then trying (or being forced to try) to be holy and apart from that sinful world is mentally violating, like rape. it's the sun that burns it's the wheel that turns it's the way we sing that makes 'em dream "The wheel" is a direct reference to Eastern religions that consider life on earth to be a cycle of reincarnation and reprisal - the karmic wheel. In other words (in Buddhism and Hinduism especially), you're going to get yours, not because of God/s necessarily but because acting out of harmony with nature will cause things to balance themselves out. It's a different way of looking at morality. and to christ: a cross and to me: a chair I will sit and earn the ransom from up here I'm a little confused about this part. Someone suggested this means an electric chair. That might be a connotation, not the real meaning though. Christ was crucified because he had a falling out with the religious leaders of his time and spoke against them. Maybe the songwriter sees his own thoughts as a kind of crucifixion, and he's just sitting in a chair and feeling miserable about faith issues, discontent with religion, conviction about sin ... something. I am a Christian but I'm not going to make this song say what it doesn't. For any other Christians who might try to, it's a wonderful song but it's not preaching the Gospel or anything universally true. It's about the songwriter's personal experiences, not all of which have to do with Christianity. |

I'm not sure about the alcoholism or physical abuse, but I noticed a few references and allusions that might be helpful in trying to figure out what this song means. "I'm looking at you through the glass Don't know how much time has passed Oh God it feels like forever ... " "Through the glass" could be an allusion to 1 Corinthians 13 which is often read at weddings and can also be used referring to one's relationship to God. It has to do with the fact that as imperfect humans, we love imperfectly and know imperfectly too. In other words, we sin, and we forget to think about Him and talk with Him; we take irrational actions and expect Him to look with favor on it. If this is the case, then the "Oh God" might not be just taking His name in vain, but more like a prayer. Or it might just be a reference to alcoholism; I could be totally wrong about that, depending on whether or not Corey is religious. "It's the stars that lie to you ... " I thought that was a balatant reference to astrology. Probably in a figurative sense: You think something is going to go great, in other words, like astrology believers would say, it was written in the stars; yet it really wasn't meant to be. Considering that Corey is married, this song might be him expressing his doubts about the relationship and its future. |

Well yes I've heard some outrageous country stars like Toby Kieth (Courtesy of the Red White and Blue) with their "propoganda," but of course it being country music he got censored on the station I listened to (I'm from down south). And I've heard the "Have You Forgotten" but that was a couple of years ago, and I haven't heard of any pro-Bush songs since then. Not to say country music isn't more toward the right, but you know. I think the liberal influence in "emo" and "alternative aka manufactured pop-punk" far exceeds that of the country music stars. By the way did anyone notice how this song made it to #1 on the EUROPEAN CHARTS, where everybody is "faggot America" (quoting the song) - they are enamoured with Hollywood and try to be like their depiction of America ... and our rock artists want to make it big in Europe, so they spew liberal propoganda, to make them happy. Hence the reason liberals are compared to Europeans. (And the timid French. I laugh at Chirac saying he'd respond with nuclear warheads if Iran attacked! I bet he'd give Arjeminihad his own country on a platter!) Green Day is just another example of an American band who made it big and sold its soul to Europe. At least the Dead Kennedys were honest in their liberalism ... i.e. they didn't sell out to a huge record company and try to make it big overseas, or give the Europeans choice fodder to laugh at Americans over. |
