The Who – Baba O'Riley Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about the plot of Lifehouse, has nothing to do with Vietnam, Constipation, drinking beers int he sump, puking in your parents house, Woodstock or anyhting real. It was written as part of FICTION. Of course, open to interpretation, but please understand the writer's intentions when you hypothesize. Dang.

If it was about sex, SHE wouldn't be going in and out, the vagina is STATIONARY. Maybe up and down, back and forth, kleft to right, but the Man is going in and out.

Pete said he acquired an accordian, figure out how to play it, came up with the melody, wrote the song as a "poorly-intended dirty joke," and reproduced the sound with guitars and banjos and to his great surprised, the band liked it enough to put it on the album (Who By Numbers) and further to his surprise, the song became a hit in the US.

I agree. This is trult a Pete Townshend masterpiece. He sings it so brilliantly. I think it's the best song on the Album.

The Who – Join Together Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is central to the Lifehouse story where music is the common language and people can put aside their differences and become one. nothing else. A great rock song by accident.

The Who – Behind Blue Eyes Lyrics 18 years ago
whofreak77 is the only one out of all of you who knows what he's talking about. This song is about the Villain in the Lifehouse story, not a personal song at all. Hitler? Come on people. White men being bashed for their wrong doing. How about this, I think this song is about one time on the road when pete was constipated and their was amirro in his hotel room opposite the bathroom and he left the bathroom door ajar and he could see himself straining and laboring and his eyes were bulging out of his head and he felt so deeply anguished that he wrote this song? Sounds better than 90% of the crap I've read.

If you saw the Daltrey Celebration concert featuring the music of Pete Townshend or have the CD, Pete sings this song and he ad-libs the line at the end, "let me see your face," a few times, among other things, which I remember because this was after the Scott Muiny interview and I knew what pete meant. My all-time favorite Who song.

The Who – Who Are You? Lyrics 18 years ago
ABSOLUTELY about God. I heard Pete Townshend describe the meaning of this song to the late Scott Muiny of WNEW FM Radio in New York in 1984, and Townshend called this song a "Prayer." The Title and the chorus, WHO ARE YOU, is Pete (as writer) asking God who he is. The final verse is all about God in Heaven: "I know there's a place you walk where Love falls from the Trees, my heart is like a broken cup, I only feel right on my knees," etc. Pete said he felt many times in his life that he should have died and God was keeping him alive and he wanted to know who God was. The best part is, although appearing grateful and humble at times in the song, his frustration reigns, and he has the balls to ask God, who the Fuck are you? The song builds to a crescendo each time (twice) that line is used. Brilliant. I get so pissed when I hear this song on public radio and the "Fuck" is edited out. It is so crucial to the attitude of the song.

The Who – Old Red Wine Lyrics 18 years ago
Also, if anyone has ever seen "the Kids Are Alright," John's passion for owning and collecting things is apparent, and the opening lines of this song reflect that. John must have left quite a few bottles of wine behind when he died, thus, "may have to finish it after crossing the line." Crossing the line is dying.

"Old Red Wine" is COMPLETELY about John Entwistle...the night he died ("they say you turned in when the sun still shined") meaning he had been out all night, with a "gorgeous girl" who was "highly primed." The Title is a reference to aonther of John's excesses (besides women and cocaine): buying, collecting and drinking vintage and rare red wines. For this part, Pete is somewhat satirical, in that, John would buy old wines that no longer had labels ("mice chewed the labels, don't know what we're buying"). It's a funny, sad, poignant epitaph for their bandmate and friend that only Pete could write. Bravo. We miss you, John!
