Peter, Paul and Mary – Puff (The Magic Dragon) Lyrics
| 9 years ago

The first concert I went to was a peter, Paul, and Mary concert. Thank you for llvyour incites on this song. I read the poem by Ogden Nash that this was supposedly based on. It seems the only thing in common is the story and description of a dragon. Nobody here has said the performers explicitly said the song isn't about weed, only that songs can be ambiguous. Someone made a conscious decision to put "puff" in the lyrics, and the reason is the subject of our investigation. "Puff the magic dragon" is very different from "puff, the magic dragon." Though, even without the comma, the phrase could be used to describe puff as a proper noun. Is "puff" merely an arbitrary or |

I used to think that 'bite the thorn that pierce the skin' referred to a syringe. As straight forward as this song seems, it's difficult to grasp the perspective. |

Soulsavers – All The Way Down Lyrics

This song reminds me of Lanegan's Pill Hill Serenade. The rising of the sun, the disappearing of the stars, the things that signal a new day and inspire optimism in most people, for him, signal the coming of six white horses with carriages drawn. Six white horses carry bodies to their grave. The rhythm to this song almost feels like it's carrying you away, it distracts from the underlying bleakness of following the moon looking for happiness. I've noticed this in a few of the songs Lanegan has performed (e.g. Sworn and Broken). |

Toward the end of Romeo and Juliet, Prince says:
...See, what a scourge is laid upon your hate,
That heaven finds means to kill your joys with love.
And I for winking at your discords too
Have lost a brace of kinsmen: all are punish'd |

Screaming Trees – All I Know Lyrics

This song brilliantly recalls the ticking down of the clock. His dilemma is to run or stay, and if he stays he'll get everything but he'll be nailed down; and if he runs he'll be free, but he'll lose everything.
But it seems like this is a reoccurring thing, and the song begins with him facing it again.
He tells himself to bite the syringe. Then the craving grows. And he caves in. |

At the beginning, I believe this is what it says:
My sex and my drugs and my rock n' roll
On my brain and body
My sex and my drugs and my rock n' roll
Are the only things that keep me erect
So get your fuckin' ???? out of my fuckin' face
My sex and my drugs and my rock n' roll are my fuckin' own business

Afghan Whigs – You My Flower Lyrics

I think it's pretty clearly about how a player has all these girls that he doesn't need and he treats them all like flowers, but then just leaves them (i.e. putting the flower back in the ground where other flowers are). And also about how those girls have no respect for themselves so they let men who have no respect for them walk all over them. |

Love the song and how it's set up: it's about someone who never felt sympathy until it caused them to hurt someone they love. |

The Smashing Pumpkins – To Forgive Lyrics

I just noticed that "birthday" in this song means more than a social gathering. At first, Billy explains how he was lost when he was born, just as he was alone at his birthday party. Then a great deal of the song talks about how he was predisposed to be lost and alone. It reminded me of "Pulseczar" in that he feels compelled to try, and forgets that his fate has already been determined. |

To me, this song has "sociopath" written all over it. Sociopaths are isolated, deceitful, and aggressive. I believe that he is simply saying "society killed me, so I'll kill society." |

One of my favorite Jane's Addiction songs. You guys are all right. It appears that Perry lost faith in God because God is supposed to create social solidarity; so when Perry sees all of the war and terror that is going on, he comes to the conclusion that there is no God. |

The Smashing Pumpkins – Soot and Stars Lyrics

I withdraw my other observation and refute everyone elses'. I hate being so pompous, but I'm confident I pieced it together correctly, and I think it would be great if everyone really understood what Billy is saying. It correlates with Marx on forced labor in a capitalist society.
This song is about how Billy feels his actions aren't his own
He talks about how abuse manifested itself in him and carries through his actions. Then he talks about how people think things are up to them, but they're really up to society. I think the third verse shows that he wants to be in control, but without society to guide him he is lost, and his work is meaningless. I think the 5th verse is "Now my gates are high" showing that since he realized it, he is more aware of it, yet he can't do anything to stop it. The 7th verse is my favorite, he seems to be saying "Since I don't have a voice, I don't need to live." So then he kind of isolates himself so his actions are free, and he can do what he wants, just play the guitar. Next he is saying that he's just society's tool to be used when needed until he dies. Finally, he kind of explains himself as two entities, on that is society, and one that is his natural state. He wants his natural state to produce something, but in order to do so, there has to be no restraints. Most importantly, he is saying that his natural part doesn't change, he develops because his social part changes; and because the natural part is the only part that is his, he dies who he was when he was born. This is the only verse I'm not quite sure of, but I think the last verse is saying that he produced something great for society, but at the expense of his health. |

Bauhaus – Exquisite Corpse Lyrics

It sounds like they all had a common theme in mind and they were all supposed to portray part of that theme. In this case it sounds like it's of a soldier dying. The first person was supposed to describe the soldier just laying there (and he did so by showing the soldier was sort of in a daze). The second person looks like he was supposed to describe the atmosphere (and did so by showing the environment dying with the soldier). Then the third part could be the last moments. Finally, "The sky's gone out" would be him dying, and the later repetitions just give a feeling of him in a dream world. |

I don't really like this song, but maybe it's because I don't quite get it. It seems as though he ignored her cries for him to drive, so they crashed and she died. I guess the underlying theme is that neglect leads to unstable relationships? |

I have to question whether this is meant to be taken as it is. At face value, this song is erotic (and we all know Perry would be the one to write this kind of song). Because of the particular way this story is told, I think it could be about a girl who's never been in a functional relationship, so she goes out and looks for one and finds another guy who only wants sex. |

This song is about the plethora of things layne can't get over. It's about how demri's death, drugs, and the corruption of the rock world pushed him back into his home effected him. He just wanted a fresh start without all of that.
to an earlier comment, Layne did like Nirvana and Kurt Cobain. They didn't talk a lot but kurt gave him a ride one time, layne said kurt talked about his daughter the whole time, he did talk a lot about kurt's character in one interview. |

These are the lyrics from spfc
[over you, like an angel]
bury me in love
bury me in love
shared your kisses
shame your heart
buried me and it hurts
i love my sister so [chain, unchain]
she don't smother me [chain, unchain, unchain]
i played the spades i know [unchain]
i'm a jack of all trades
would you bury me
want to see her born inside [hide, hide]
some of the things you just can't hide
if you see her tell me why [hide, hide]
why won't she come outside
if you see her tell me why [hide, hide]
why won't she come outside
want to see her born inside [hide, hide]
some of the things you just can't hide
she waits, bury me
she waits, bury me |
