I love this song, I do not know why but it makes me feel that it is about someone getting an abortion and that they need a bitter song to get them through this tough time.
Even though the life folded in her stomach will give her unconditional love, she doesn't like it, she doesn't want to feed it and grow it and she is thinking about going through with the abortion and prevent her unborn child from seeing daylight. But if she is not strong enough to make that decision, the baby might see daylight.
I know that might sound crazy but this is how I interpreted the song :D |

Well I always believed it was about suicide, but now when I read the comments about the pregnancy and the abortion, I think that the song might be after all about a combination of both cases, I think Isobel had a boyfriend who left her once he knew she got pregnant and then she had to kill herself thinking that it was the only solution to liberate her from her misery, then the part where Dido sings " And who he would become by the things he'd have done ....." I think she is like mourning the unborn child, that innocently died, stating that he might have loved his mom more than his father and he might have been stronger to sick to her side and look after her, unlike his father. |

I think it's about her best male friend's girlfriend death, so i agree with some of the above posts... + she doesn't want her friend to mourn forever which implies the death of his loved one.. |
