In response to xlushlipsx: Saying that "God wanted him earlier" when somebody dies young is a way of rationalizing and coping with the loss of a loved one. Nobody actually knows that God wanted that person earlier nor can they prove it. Because it is an unlogical unprovable statement normal logic does not apply and therefore it does NOT imply that old people are bad and that God does not want them. Keep in mind that none of this has anything to do with the song. The "die" part of the title has nothing to do with actual death. It implies that by never having fun you are never truly living. The "good" such as Church girls are governed by tight laws which reduce or eliminate the type of fun that Billy Joel speaks of. Therefore, only the good die young because they are the only ones not truly living (according to Billy Joel). In the end it is up to you to decide what fun is and what life is all about. Role models should be looked to for guidance and understanding in forming your own personal beliefs. Multiple viewpoints can paint a clear picture of what you like and what you think is inappropriate. Of course, if your parents have indoctrinated you with strict beliefs and make you feel guilty for not adhering to these beliefs then you are in a tight situation much like Virginia in this song. However, Billy Joel was not interested in opening her eyes for anything more than being able to have sex with her. This is why it is important to take all advice you are given with a grain of salt. Always consider the intentions of the advice giver before allowing yourself to make hasty decisions such as giving up your virginity to a guy who just wants to use you for fun. |

this song is incredible. It just builds and builds and builds the whole way. You can feel it welling up inside of you and then it EXPLODES at the end. Truly a magical journey. I always feel like I can take on the world after the crescendo. It makes me feel bold and daring, ready for anything. This song reminds me of falling in love, or a first kiss with a girl. It starts off calm, like when you first meet somebody, and then as your interest grows in this special person your heart beat quickens. You can feel your heart begin to quicken as the song rolls on. The pace escalates and escalates until the final explosion of emotion, possibly a kiss or release of emotion. The last two minutes are simply raw beautiful emotion, emotion that's been welling inside for quite some time that has finally been released. i love it |

My first intincts when listening to this were "MARSHALL MATHERS WHAT THE FUCK ARE YOU DOING? THIS IS STUPID RETARTED SHIT AND A HELL OF A LOT LESS THAN I WOULD EXPECT FROM YOUR RETIREMENT ALBUM" and to be honest it is a pretty stupid song, kind of catchy and fun but extremely low quality. But isn't it obvious? This is Slim Shady's last stand. The crazy, fucked up, entertaining, silly alter ego is making his last stand. Later in "When im gone" he kills shady. "I put a gun to my head and screamed 'god shady' and popped it". As stupid as it is (and it's probably the farthest shady has pushed weirdness so far), this song does not come without symbolic nature. Shady senses that his end is near so he pretty much goes insane. Shady is dead now. There is only Marshall Mathers, the dad, producer and family man. R.I.P. slim shady |
