The Undertones – My Perfect Cousin Lyrics | 14 years ago |
Yeah, the Who.... I've been wondering about that too. Remember their song, 'Cousin Kevin'? "I'm the school bully, the classroom cheat..." Perhaps the "perfect" cousin's name in this song was intentionally chosen as a tribute to the Who? |
of Montreal – Vegan in Furs Lyrics | 15 years ago |
Yeah, it's definitely about pseudo-intellectuals, also written from the point of view of one of them. As for the title, apart from being a pun on "Venus in Furs", I believe it's a metaphor for pretentiousness, which would fit perfectly considering the topic of this song. What I find ironic is that the narrator in this song rants about such people, not realizing they are one of those people themselves. I actually know a guy who behaves exactly like the character in this song. |
Porcupine Tree – Way Out of Here Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I think it's about a suicide attempt. Considering there's one final track with more hopeful lyrics, I don't believe the character succeeds in it. This song is definitely one of the most depressive Wilson has ever written. I agree about the lyrics being very straightforward and obvious, but remember it's written through a teenager's eyes, which I believe is the main reason for the lyrical style. I disagree about Steven Wilson writing "immature" lyrics. Remember albums like Sky Moves Sideways or Signify, those lyrics were full of metaphors. FOABP lyrics are more down-to-earth because the character's perspective is a different one. |
Porcupine Tree – Heartattack in a Lay By Lyrics | 16 years ago |
*sigh* Serial killer, huh? Well, I guess you can link that theme to any kind of song. My opinion is that it's about the aftermath of a quarrel, possibly ending in suicide. |
Porcupine Tree – Sleep Together Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I agree with Cedstick. I don't really think this song is solely about sex. The character is leaving behind the past (and eventually succeeds, other than in "Way Out Of Here") and the future as well ("Switch off the future" etc.), deciding to live in the here and now, not worrying anymore about things he can never change. It might possibly be connected to the sexual theme; in this case, sex is probably a metaphor for the beginning of a new age, however that doesn't mean actual sex doesn't play a role in the character's metamorphosis. Lyrically it's actually a lot more positive than the other songs on FOABP, but it doesn't console the listener like "Collapse The Light Into Earth" or "Glass Arm Shattering". These lyrics rather call on you to become active, for only you can lift yourself out of the despair. "Do or drown in torpor." In a way, it is similar to "Stop Swimming", though more optimistic. Then again, the music is pretty dark and makes the whole song sound more hopeless and suicidal. Maybe it was intended. It wouldn't be that peculiar, considering that Porcupine Tree once wrote a musically uplifting song about rape ("Blackest Eyes"). PS. im_a_pirate, take a look at the lyrics. Both phrases appear in the song. |
Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics | 16 years ago |
Personally, I believe this song has absolutely nothing to do with serial killers. And I believe it's not the only exception. In Absentia definitely has a "loose concept" - many of its songs deal with psychopaths; but it doesn't have a story like, for example, Pink Floyd's "The Wall" does. It's kind of amusing watching people commenting on songs like this one or "Trains", desperately trying to connect them to the killer theme... You've got creative minds, folks! |
The Flaming Lips – Pompeii Am Götterdämmerung Lyrics | 16 years ago |
"Götterdämmerung" is a term German poets used for the end of the world. The literal translation of the word is "the Gods' twilight". |
The Pogues – Fairytale Of New York Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I don't think it's written from the perspective of an old man / woman. He rather talks about the time when he first met her on a Christmas Eve, and it all seemed to turn out well. But now, it's Christmas again, and they are drunk and homeless (and she's a drug addict - i.e. "you're an old slut on junk".) this is a very beautiful song, and far better than all the other X-mas songs out there (though I also like Lennon's "Happy X-Mas" very much.) |
Modest Mouse – Wild Packs of Family Dogs Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Like many others, I think it's about a religious sect (sublimechump's interpretation is very good); the wild packs of family dogs refer to the members, because they are usually like a family (big community). "My father got his gun shot it up, they ran away ok": At first, the father is critical. The sentence "My father got his gun, shot it up" compares the sect to wild animals or burglars. "as my own dog ran away with them, I didn't say much of anything at all": Replace the word "dog" with "god", and it makes sense again: He leaves his old religion for the new one. Then his family is torn apart by the sect, though he doesn't care much about it, hence "ok" after each line. Finally, he himself is "eaten up": It doesn't refer to death, rather to him being a full member of the "dogs'" organization - it's like a swamp too deep to get out of again. |
They Might Be Giants – We Want A Rock Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah, it's about fads... I think the line "Someone in this town is trying to burn their playhouse down, they want to stop the ones who want..." is about the ones who want to "stop" the fashion trends, but they can't because "Everybody wants prosthetic foreheads on their real heads". Oh... and maybe they sing about a rock to wind a string around (and prosthetic foreheads) to show how silly those trends are? i.e. if you are a good salesman, you can sell a piece of shit to the people and they'll all buy it because it's "cool" to have it. |
They Might Be Giants – I Am A Grocery Bag Lyrics | 17 years ago |
There might be some link ^^ to "Dead", where they sing about re-incarnation as a grocery bag. I think this song is a sequel to Dead. |
John Cale – The Endless Plain of Fortune Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a great song. John Cale should really get more comments... It's definitely about settlers in South Africa around 1910. People tried to find their fortune in the gold and diamond mines. However, one day the gold was gone, and the people went away. Transvaal was a province in South Africa. |
Green Day – Boulevard of Broken Dreams Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Leblanc, you are an idiot. Not because you don't like Green Day, but because you haven't got nothing better to do than writing this! |
Green Day – Boulevard of Broken Dreams Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It's sad that, on a website called "songmeanings.net", people just quarrel whether Green Day is cool or crap... Songmeanings is there to discuss about the meanings of songs. So why do you comment on songs you don't like with things like "THIS SONG IS HORRIBLE!!!! ALONG WITH EVERY GREEN DAY SONG!!!! THEY ARE TRUELY THE WORST BAND EVER!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!"????? Search for "I hate Green Day" with Google. And then write something into the guestbook of an anti-Green Day homepage, but not here. OK? PS. And no, I'm not a poser. I like Pink Floyd. |
Green Day – The Saints Are Coming (Skids cover) Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a very good song. skywalker14 is right, the song is written from a satirical / Bush-criticising point of view. "House Of The Rising Sun" is traditional I think, but the Animals did a very good (and famous) song with their version. Bob Dylan also recorded the song, it's one of his earlier tunes. |
Cat Stevens – Hummingbird Lyrics | 17 years ago |
hmmmm.... I think she is dying, of cancer or something. She lies in her bed and he sits beside it, watching her dying, not able to do anything anymore. The other explanation is that they went to bed, and when he wakes up the next morning she is gone. Probably just a one night stand or something. This song is sad and beautiful, but sometimes a bit TOO beautiful = kitschy. I can play it on my guitar. |
Cat Stevens – Blackness of the Night Lyrics | 17 years ago |
This is a very beautiful song, but one of Cat Stevens' saddest. It's really hopeless. And midnight_listener, your comment describes it best. |
Radiohead – No Surprises Lyrics | 17 years ago |
I think it's about someone who's sick of the job that "slowly kills" him, the "heart that's full up like a landfill", and the "alarms" and the "surprises". It's about someone wanting to retire. "I'll take the quiet life" describes it best, you retire, you sit down on the couch, watch TV, stroke cats, sometimes your children visit you, all in all just boring. However, he actually WANTS it boring. He has enough of the surprises, his dangerous job (something with carbon monoxide?) etc. and now, he just wants a quiet life, a pretty house and a pretty garden. And the melody, well it doesn't sound really sad, especially when compared to other Radiohead songs. I think the whole song is a bit ironic, and it fits in with OK Computer lyrically (but not musically). I like it. PS. The part with "You look so tired" is written "you look so tired nhappy" in the booklet. That could mean "You look so tired, unhappy". But it could ALSO mean "You look so tired AND happy". You can't really figure it out by listening. Anyway, that doesn't change the overall meaning. |
Cat Stevens – When I Speak To The Flowers Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Oh my god.... there is a REALLY unpleasant grumbling in the background sometimes.... I'd even call it scary!!! Does anyone know what kind of instrument that is? |
Porcupine Tree – This Is No Rehearsal Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Yeah, I read that but I don't believe it's really about that. You can interpret it in other ways, even when Steven Wilson said it's about that child abducted and murdered. With only reading the lyrics, you think "oh, it's clear - it's about that child murdered" but the music sounds far too happy. I mean, there are so many sad PT songs, but this one isn't one of them. Said in another way: Musically, it's quite uplifting. Lyrically, it's quite dark. |
The White Stripes – Little People Lyrics | 18 years ago |
wtf? about buttoning a jacket? do you talk about "The Hardest Button To Button"? that song, of course, is NOT about buttoning a jacket... |
Obscene Jesters – Kicking Babys In He Head Lyrics | 18 years ago |
funny lyrics, but retarded. that's something you can't release on an album. |
Obscene Jesters – Fuck Lyrics | 18 years ago |
AmericanCrackhead, I think you are a member of the Obscene Jesters? Because you call a song that only consists of "fuckfuckfuckfuck...." and "you" brilliant!? |
Obscene Jesters – Raping Little Girls Lyrics | 18 years ago |
retarded |
Obscene Jesters – The Masturbater Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Why do all the people say that's great? Look at the lyrics, that's just retarded! After all, even the Bloodhound Gang's lyrics are WAY better than this! |
The White Stripes – The Air Near My Fingers Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"HIS parents are quite rich so HE dropped out of school" megisgod, he didn't talk about Jack White but about the man in the song. This song is one of my favourites. I think the Red Hot Chili Peppers ripped it off for the verses of their new song, "Dani California"... |
The Beatles – Cry Baby Cry Lyrics | 18 years ago |
What does John sing at the end of the song? It's something with "take me back", but I don't know exactly! |
The White Stripes – I'm Lonely (But I Ain't That Lonely Yet) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"sometimes i wanna call you, and i feel like her pet" It's "I feel like a pest". If you listen closely (no background noises), you can hear an "s" in the last word. |
The Offspring – Never Gonna Find Me Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I know many people who are like the person in the song. Those persons hide their real character behind a fake one. The others think they are like that and will never find the persons' "real me". Great song. For me, the best Splinter song is Lightning Rod, but the part from 1:57 - 2:20 or so is the best part in the whole album! |
Pink Floyd – Seabirds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Yes, I got them but I didn't see it because I didn't look. I don't get emails very often. I'm sorry. I've found a version of the song on a p2p site 2 years ago, but I couldn't download it (I don't know what was the reason, I can't remember). I don't know what version it was. I've searched for the song again and again in 2004 and 2005, but I couldn't find it again. So, after all, I think the version without the person talking doesn't even exist or must at least be very rare. But I think there are programs (wave editors etc.) which can filter out the noise in the background. The problem is, if such programs exist, they are very expensive because they're professional. however... if I find a "good" version, I'll let you know. |
The White Stripes – Blue Orchid Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Many songs (by Black Sabbath, for example) contain satanic messages. You can hear them when the song is played backwards. Also, many other songs (Stairway to Heaven etc.) are said to have satanic backward messages, but it's not true. Maybe the White Stripes make fun of this because they play their song backwards on their site? "Orchid" derives from a Latin word meaning testicles because the roots of an orchid are said to look like testicles. The phrase "Get behind me Satan" is from the bible. Jesus says it to Peter: Matthew 16:23. But he turned, and said unto Peter, Get thee behind me, Satan: thou art an offence unto me: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but those that be of men. Mark 8:33. But when he had turned about and looked on his disciples, he rebuked Peter, saying, Get thee behind me, Satan: for thou savourest not the things that be of God, but the things that be of men. Luke 4:8. And Jesus answered and said unto him, Get thee behind me, Satan: for it is written, Thou shalt worship the Lord thy God, and him only shalt thou serve. |
Pink Floyd – Seabirds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The first poem (the animal poem) is a good one, and much better than the song (the version with the people talking over it). The song, as written and recorded by Pink Floyd (without the voices) is one of the hardest to get PF songs ever. It's included on some rare bootlegs, but I don't know what version it is. The second poem reminds me of Final Cut lyrics. You wrote, "a series of 10ish poems that I wrote against the Iraq war, nuclear war, political corruptness, the Holocaust, George Bush, and the entire human race", so it fits in with the Final Cut theme. I think it criticizes Bush and the war in an intelligent way. Great! |
Bloodhound Gang – Overheard in a Wawa Parking Lot Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The thing (I wouldn't call it song) is recorded in a parking lot of a Wawa store, I think. (Do you even know what a wawa is?) :) and that explains the car thing.... I think Jimmy Pop makes fun of sex in a car! |
R.E.M. – Tongue Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Stipe is queer, not gay. |
R.E.M. – Shiny Happy People Lyrics | 18 years ago |
i've also read that they just didn't want to be called a "morbid, sad and dark" band, so they made this song. but of course, it's sarcastic - you already know it when you know why they wrote the song. I think they ridicule the happy pop songs. |
R.E.M. – Ages Of You Lyrics | 18 years ago |
One of the best songs on Dead Letter Office. It would have fit on Reckoning very well (although Peter Buck said that the band had got tired of the song). The lyrics are a bit strange, but I think it's about someone remembering a girl he loved long qgo. All her postcards are stowed away in a drawer, but whenever he looks at them again, he remembers the past (earlier "ages" of her). The second verse is even less clear, but I think the train is a metaphor for love, and the hanging bridge is the relationship that's over with the moment when the train falls. |
R.E.M. – Auctioneer (Another Engine) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
"Listen to the bargain holler...." In Life And How To Live It, there's a line: "Listen to the holler..." coincidence? |
R.E.M. – Dream (All I Have To Do) Lyrics | 18 years ago |
It's also included on the European version of Lifes Rich Pageant (I.R.S. vintage version). |
Porcupine Tree – Heartattack in a Lay By Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I think the song is about someone who feels a bit strange but thinks he's OK and then has a heartattack. He knows he'll "live" with his dead girlfriend again. If In Absentia is a concept album, then this theory's good, because it could be that: Soon after his wedding (Wedding Nails) his wife died (Wedding Nails / Prodigal) (maybe because she was murdered by a rapist), and he tried to find something to help him (Prodigal) but couldn't. |
Porcupine Tree – .3 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is about war. .3 probably stands for World War III. |
Porcupine Tree – Blackest Eyes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Oh, it actually IS "under the trees". Then it makes more sense. |
Pink Floyd – Seabirds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
OK, I'd like to see the poem. Please let me know when it's finished. |
Pink Floyd – Flight from Reality Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I love the title of the song. I've never heard about it except for an interview with Waters in late 1975 with the Rock & Folk magazine. It could have become Pigs (3 different Ones) but I guess not because Pigs isn't "very strange". I would rather certificate songs like Several Species.... very strange. Anyway, the page is great! (allofmp3) |
Porcupine Tree – Blackest Eyes Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is about rape or desire, or both. Lyric analysis: "A mother sings a lullabye to her child Sometime in the future the boy goes wild" "He" is the singer himself (I don't mean Steven Wilson, I mean the "narrator" of the song, you know). This is kind of retrospective, he remembers when he was young. "The future" is the present here, because it's all retrospective. "And all his nerves are feeling some kind of energy." He feels the strange feeling everyone feels when he wants to screw a girl =) "Walk in the woods and I will try Something in the trees that made you cry It's so erotic when your makeup runs." He rapes the girl in a forest. She cries, but he just thinks "Ah, that looks erotic". The only thing I'm not clear about is why there's something "in the trees" that made her cry and not "under the trees". I believe this line HAS a meaning, I just don't know what. "I got wiring loose inside my head I got books that I never ever read" Wiring loose in his head means that he's mentally insane. Don't know why he thinks that of himself, that's not quite normal. Anyway, again the other line is something i don't quite understand. "I got secrets in my garden shed I got a scar where all my urges bled" He raped people in his garden shed. I don't know what the scar thing means, however. "I got people underneath my bed I got a place where all my dreams are dead Swim with me into your blackest eyes." The people underneath his bed are the ones he already raped. The line is more of a metaphor, I don't really think he's got people underneath his bed. It means that he hides the secret that he raped someone. "Swim with me into your blackest eyes" means "Sleep with me" or something like that. "A few minutes with me inside my van Should be so beautiful if we can I'm feeling something taking over me." He also wants to screw her in her car. The lust is the "something taking over him". ----------------------------------------------------- That's my interpretation. it's maybe a bit dirty and I'm not clear about everything, but as a whole, that's the song's meaning IMO. |
Porcupine Tree – The Sound Of Muzak Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is the main reason why I don't think In Absentia is a concept album. The serial killer concept doesn't fit in here. And yes, it's the most interpretable song. |
Pink Floyd – Embryo Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is an Ummagumma outtake by Roger Wates, but he dropped it in favor of Several Species. I guess he just wanted a "differnt", more experimental song. However, I wish this was on Ummagumma as the closer for the studio disc. The Grand Vizier's Garden Party isn't bad, but it's no good closer. The Narrow Way would have been better, but the perfect closer would have been Embryo. |
Pink Floyd – Seabirds Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I know, it's lifted directly from the movie More (played in a party scene), that's why there's that person talking. There must be some other versions, though I couldn't find any, neither on illegal nor on legal sites. Maybe you can find a program to filter the vocals of the person. |
Pink Floyd – Nick's Boogie Lyrics | 18 years ago |
That song was featured in a movie called "Tonight Let's All Make Love In London"; it was released on various bootlegs and a rare EP (the soundtrack to the film). The EP features a long version (16 minutes, I think) of Interstellar Overdrive on the first side and Nick's Boogie on the other. "Nick" is Nick Mason. |
Pink Floyd – Oenone Lyrics | 18 years ago |
Zabriskie Point outtake. It's more than similar to another ZP outtake, "Fingal's Cave" IMO. I know it under the name of "OneOne" but that's just another name for it, it's not clear which title's the right one. "Oenone" is someone appearing in Greek mythology; the other title "OneOne" could be spoken "onioni", like the end of Antonioni (the director of Zabriskie Point). |
Pink Floyd – Fearless Lyrics | 18 years ago |
(I mean his comments of course). |
