Big Star – Back of a Car Lyrics 18 years ago
My Guess.. this about a young guy fumbling with an older chick in the back of her car, but wondering if he should go all the way. Its about that cusp of adolescence thing between childhood and adulthood. Sh*t hot song, Sh*t hot band.

Big Star – September Gurls Lyrics 18 years ago
Astonishing song, that incessant down strum on the guitar should make it a dirge, but the drums/bass push it along so well.... and so melodic aswell. Only thing... Whassitmean? & Why GUrls?

The Stranglers – Golden Brown Lyrics 18 years ago
The interesting thing about this song for me as a musician is that its in 6/8 (The instrumental bridges add an extra beat in every other measure, effectively producing a 13/8 time signature) The BBC decided to make the record the single of the week
The band claimed that the song's lyrics were akin to an aural Rorschach test and that people only heard in it what they wanted to hear, although this did not prevent persistent allegations that the lyrics were about heroin.

Beautiful little song. The 'wears his hair' line is hilarious. The last line is just downright beautiful.

The Beatles – Strawberry Fields Forever Lyrics 18 years ago
Lennons childhood house in Menlove avenue backs onto strawberry fields orphanage grounds. If he climbed over the fence when he was a kid he would have been in strawberry fields. Its just a very pretty lyric about yearning for lost childhood.

The Beatles – Penny Lane Lyrics 18 years ago
I live in Smithdown Road. Just next to Penny Lane, its just an ordinary street really, but thats the whole point. Its just a pretty homage to the strangeness of ordinary things when you're a child. A achingly beautifull little song really, although i admit to being biased.

The Beatles – Back in the U.S.S.R. Lyrics 18 years ago
I heard lennon/mac were so sick of all the 'america is great, lets all go down to the hop' sentiments of west coast pop that he wrote this out of bloody mindedness, i must admitt they did a good job. Also i went to the USSR in 88 and its was much better then than now, beleive me.

The Stone Roses – Fools Gold Lyrics 18 years ago
Squire and Brown went hitching round europe, im sure i read that this refers to that in some way. My take is that its telling some girl to stop being so money obsessed. Got to be one of the most poetic dance songs ever recorded and the de Sade line is sh*t hot.

The Stone Roses – Mersey Paradise Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm from liverpool and agree that its a piss take. But i think its a brilliant pastiche of sun-drenched beachboysy pop, but rather than about california its about a the scruffy countryside fringing the mersey between Manchester and Liverpool where the roses used to play as kids. I used to play there and the song fits it perfectly - ironic genius!

The Stone Roses – Waterfall Lyrics 18 years ago
This is an astonishing song, great riff and those lyrics...
I'm not a flag waver or anything but I think this is one of the most profoundly patriotic songs i've ever heard. Britain's got its faults, its old and creaky, it lives in the past etc, but despite being almost submerged by the influence of US culture it carries on in its rickety eccentric way. The absolute master stroke is that the song is in the style of a sea shanty with Ian Brown doing his folky best to sound like a 19th century troubador. Effin Brillliant!

Listen to it 5 times in a row, it grows on you. All the seafaring imagery is great and unique for a stones song (most Brit bands have at least one, its an island y'now)

The Rolling Stones – Rocks Off Lyrics 18 years ago
The sunlight bores the daylights outa me! Jagger Richards on being the worlds most over-stimulated rockstars. Richards strung out on heroin (loss of sexual apetites) in his french villa.

The Rolling Stones – Monkey Man Lyrics 18 years ago
Aw c'mon, a stones song about Darwins theory of evolution?! Its just a take on the 'i'm a worthless sack of sh*t' Blues lyrics that the stones loved so much. I agree the song is absolutely ACE though.

The Rolling Stones – Jumpin Jack Flash Lyrics 18 years ago
From a British perspective, the stuff about the gardener may be true, but also Jagger Richards were born during the Luftwaffes Blitz of London with incendiary bombs which caused firestorms (Crossfire hurricane) and a common mythical figure in 20th century britain was 'spring healed Jack', a kind of imp or devil that used to jump from roof to roof (like the US bogeyman. My interpretation of the song is its an amalgam of different meanings, but mostly about the 60s generation having a gas after the austerity of 40s & 50s London.
