Awesome song. It has to be my favorite song intro ever. And the change in tempo from quick paced to Black Sabbath sluggishness is awesome too.
As for what mindlessidiot said, I didn't really think Louder than Love was refined enough. They weren't matured enough musically then.

I understand everything about the song, it's basically what everyone else said up their, but the one part that puzzles me, the symbol Halo. i have no idea what it means. i don't thinks it's what iork said where cornell is mocking christians because i don't think he does that. Cornell uses a lot of christian symbols to mean a completely different message (This was seen a lot in Soundgarden). But he's never used them in a mocking message. I still don't know what halo means. |

If it weren't for this song who knows who my favorite band would've been (probably some emo shit. ugh!!!) .
I never really gave a rats ass about Soundgarden till i heard this on the radio, so i went out that night and bought the cd and the rest is history. this is just an all around awesome song. I can't pick a fav. Soundgarden song because there are just too many good ones (from all 3 of their major albums) but, this one really captures all the good qualities of Soundgarden, even Matt Cameron backing vocals and kick ass drum playing. |

Wow love the guitars on this are awesome. On a rating of 1-10 on the Understandability Chart i think this would get a 2 being up there with Even Flow. Or likewise on the Mumblability Chart I'd give it a 9 (I actually understood the "I don't want to stay,
Make me cry..." part of the song, making it just shy of a 10) But these songs are what make Eddie Vedder such a unique singer |

This is mainly what everyone else is saying but, Shangri-La is the name of a Chinese place thats similar to the Garden of Eden, or somthing alone those lines. So what he's saying that his Heaven on Earth or his perfect place is up on stage doing his thing he doesn't care what people think and all the crap he's gone through is suddenly all worth it. |

I actually think this song is about politicians instead. The whole song seems like it's about a politician who gave all theses promises and once he got in office broke every single one of them. It’s just a thought. After all it is a usual Soundgarden song and it can mean whatever you want it to and it'll sound right. And you guys are right, his voice is crazy in this song. |

See i Don't beleive that this was their best album like others say but i do think it was a huge breakthrough on their part. But about this song it is just another powerfull example of how much emotional power chris cornell can put into his voice. this is one of my favorite ones in that aspect. Another really good one that is similar to it is "Times of Trouble" by Temple of the dog. Chris's vocals in that are equally amazing. |

First i just wanna say, like the other 20 people who wrote about these guys' song) these guy are amazing and didn't get the cretid they deserved. and they also remind me of The Door; mainly because of Makr lanegan's voice.
Anyway i think this has somthing to do with drugs. Alice is a symbol for that drug. it's just a thought. this is a really cool song though, especially since Chris Cornell (lead singer Soundgarden & Audioslave) does some backup in the end. showing u these guys had respect from some of the other bands of the time. |

Agreed to what the first dude said, this is a great song and i wish more people realized it. This is one of my favorite guitar parts. But ya it could be about Andrew Wood, a lot of bands were making little tributes to him at this time. |
