Nine Inch Nails – Head Like a Hole Lyrics 13 years ago
How would you explain the following lines then?

god money's not looking for the cure
god money's not concerned about the sick among the pure
god money let's go dancing on the backs of the bruised
god money's not one to choose

Would they better apply to:
1) A person consumed with gaining wealth.
2) A person who worships God.

Sounds like more of an Ebenezer Scrooge type to me.

I meant to say "does not seem right" in regards to the double suicide. I don't see any evidence to support this.

I definitely feel is is about death, although a double suicide does seem right. The car crash theory really appeals to me.

Notice how it shifts from second person to third person on the chorus. I think this indicates her body has died and is just a shell of what it was. He is no longer speaking to her, but speaking about her.

The "soul in her eyes" is noted in the verse, but on the chorus (after her death) it says her eyes are "empty as the sky."

The "fight replaces fright" could mean the fright of oncoming death, yet she tries to fight it off for as long as possible.

And what of the line "you die, you're gone, just like me."? That doesn't sound like a breakup at all. It sounds like death.

Depeche Mode – Policy Of Truth Lyrics 16 years ago
The thesis of the song rests with these 4 lines:

"It's too late to change events
It's time to face the consequence
For delivering the proof
In the policy of truth"

I think it says that it's too late to change what you have done, so if you tell the truth you are going to face the consequences of your actions, with the implication that telling the truth is a bad idea. Even though the pronoun "you" is used, I can't help but think he is having a conversation with himself, and kicking himself for what he said.

Don Henley – The Boys of Summer Lyrics 18 years ago
This song in a nutshell: This girl is fickle. He thought they were in love. Everything is cheapened when she has all kinds of flings with other guys. But that doesn't change his feelings for her. He tries to get over her, but it doesn't work.

The moral of the story: stay away from fickle women. They rip your heart out.

Depeche Mode – Blasphemous Rumours Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of the great arguments against God's existence. One would think of Christianity as having a protective quality to it. If you have faith in God it seems that He should protect you. However, it seems that God has other plans sometimes. There is a book in the Bible that deals with this subject: Job.

Here's the reader's digest version of Job:
It's all about how Job was the most righteous man on earth, and Satan has a kind of wager with God that Job will turn away from his faith if bad stuff starts happening to him. So God allows satan to do all kinds of unimaginably bad stuff to him: ruin his fortune, kill his family, and give him painful and irritating boils that he has to scrape with potsherds (broken pots I think). Things get worse and worse for Job until his friends come over to comfort him. They go off on him because they assume he's commiting some major sin to deserve such punishment. Job contests correctly that he's innocent of such charges. Eventually he gets an answer from God. "Who are you to question God?" is the basic idea of it. He gets better, and gets a new family.. etc. But it doesn't take away the pain and suffering that was already caused.

Depeche Mode – John The Revelator Lyrics 18 years ago
Um... Revelation has many more than 7 chapters... 21, was it? Anyhow, songs that rant like this really get on my nerves. They should go back to the 70s where they belong. "smooth operator"?? seriously. This is one of the weakest DM songs ever.

Revelation is composed of three sets of 7 judgements. The trumpets the seals and the bowls. There are several views as to the order of these judgements. 1) trumpet 1, bowl 1, and seal 1 all happen at the same time. 2) I don't remember, do some research. 3) The 7th trumpet judgement is the seal judgements, and the 7th seal judgement is the bowl judgements. (I could be wrong about the order here) In this view, all the judgements follow consecutively, as the book is written. There are several other views that see the judgements as being past (amillenial is one of them), or from the past even as seen by John. I hope this has been an educational experience for you.

The Cure – Lullaby Lyrics 18 years ago
I can see how it could be taken to refer to sexual abuse, but I don't think that is the best explaination. I know exactly how a nightmare feels: you can't move, you can't scream, you just have to watch in horror. There might be allusions to sexual abuse to relate to the helplessness of a nightmare. Waking up in the shivering cold after a nightmare is an awful feeling.

Apoptygma Berzerk – Until The End Of The World Lyrics 18 years ago
Has anyone considered the possibility that this may be about the death of a wife or girlfriend? If this is the case, it would explain a few things.

1) Until the end of the world - until death, so he can be reunited with his lost lover
2) Fate hits me in my face, though you feel nothing - the fate is that she died... breaking up with someone is hardly what I would call fate
3) Only time will heal, you say. Your words my therapy. - her words are ringing in his mind after she has passed away
4) I cry out loud but you hear nothing. - She is motionless and unresponsive inside the casket. He is mourning her death.

Apoptygma Berzerk – In This Together Lyrics 18 years ago
In case you don't realize, it makes reference to the "Footprints in the Sand" poem, a religious decoration often displayed in the bathroom ;) While I don't see this song as a religious song, but a song about a broken relationship, I take this reference to mean that he somehow took this girl for granted, or thought that she wasn't there for him, when in reality she was.

Here is the text of the poem:

Footprints in the Sand

One night I dreamed I was walking along the beach with the Lord.
Many scenes from my life flashed across the sky.
In each scene I noticed footprints in the sand.
Sometimes there were two sets of footprints,
other times there were one set of footprints.

This bothered me because I noticed
that during the low periods of my life,
when I was suffering from
anguish, sorrow or defeat,
I could see only one set of footprints.

So I said to the Lord,
“You promised me Lord,
that if I followed you,
you would walk with me always.
But I have noticed that during the most trying periods of my life
there have only been one set of footprints in the sand.
Why, when I needed you most, you have not been there for me?”

The Lord replied,
“The times when you have seen only one set of footprints in the sand,
is when I carried you.”

Apoptygma Berzerk – You keep me from breaking apart Lyrics 18 years ago
Seems to me there is only two options. 1) A prayer to God. 2) A song written to a good friend or a lover. I tend to think the former for several reasons. First, the phrase "restore my soul" is used... a rather biblical term (i.e. Psalm 23). Second, it doesn't seem to indicate a romantic relationship, and the song is kept very gender neutral. Third, it's the hurt that "only you" can take away... if it is a romantic interest or a good friend it could mean that he knows them on that deep of a level, a deep sort of trust, but even that seems picturesque of a spiritual relationship with God. Also, there is a sort of deep understanding that there is a telepathic link, or something similar (such as the phrase "you understand the chaos in my head" or the phrase "you understand every word I say." But who knows... it could very well be a song written to his pet.
