Cold War Kids – Skip the Charades Lyrics 9 years ago
"I'm the one that's acting like I'm so strong; you're the one that's acting like nothing's wrong."

Those are the same thing. If I'm "acting like I'm so strong", she might think I'm "acting like nothing's wrong" and vice versa. Because of that line, I immediately connected with this song; after hearing it a few times, it occurred to me that both parties in this song are putting on a charade.

Tool – Eulogy Lyrics 9 years ago
It is about Bill Hicks. It is. How is there any discussion about this?

Tool songs often have double- and triple-meanings; narrow interpretations and broad ones. Things only the band understands, things only fans understand, and things anyone who listens to the song can get. Yes, Eulogy can be interpreted broadly but it also clearly applies to Bill Hicks. I mean there's an image of Bill in the fucking liner notes--and his death took place after Undertow and before Aenima.

Bill Hicks DID tell us how he wasn't afraid to die; he DID have a voice that was strong and loud; he DID rant and wave his finger; he DID seem to consider himself a bit of a martyr (although he never would have said that out loud); and those last few lines are perhaps the most poignant: You must be crucified/For our sins and lies. Bill Hicks never made it big in the US, he spent his career yelling things the American people needed to hear but nobody wanted to listen, they wanted to close their third eyes and stumble through their Reagan-and-Bush-era lives, psychically blind.

Pinback – Diminished Lyrics 11 years ago
Well, I had a more eloquent interpretation but it was lost and I'm out of both time and patience. Here's what I think:

It's about depression, sorrow, or drug addiction, causing a person to allow their life to waste away. Something is "diminishing" this person.

"Should it be so hard to have a nice day?"

Though we both heard the same music, the same instruments, the same voice, the same lyrics, and even the same core message, we find ourselves feeling very differently from one another after hearing the song.

Broken Bells – Trap Doors Lyrics 13 years ago
Your interpretation and mine parallel in our understanding of the general message--each of us (unless I have misunderstood your post) spotted hints of tireless efforts, ultimately fruitless, mired in hopelessness and regret.

After applying my own subjective filters, I imagined a poor soul whose fear of trust fuels a tireless engine of self-isolation; finally one of this person's few loved ones, exhausted, decides to give up on caring about this person; and then the song is over. In my world, listening to Trap Doors by The Shins leaves a person with a sense of loss and disappointment. I find myself, in this song, on the receiving end of abandonment.

You, however, are on the other side of this interpretation. You were reminded of great measures of time and effort you ultimately decided were wasted; and then you elaborated, in your posting, on the salvation you found after abandoning this hopeless goal that once consumed you, to find a profoundly more rewarding life.

The point I am long-windedly making, is that I am impressed with James Mercer's lyrics. There were clear and distinct similarities between what you heard and what I heard, yet each of us managed to find ourselves nestled comfortably into opposite sides of this coin.

Broken Bells – Trap Doors Lyrics 14 years ago
What I love about James Mercer's lyrics is that they can be so infinitely interpretable.

I think this song is about a person who recedes from people; a person who has trouble letting others in; a person who insists on isolating himself because it is all he knows how to do. This person cuts people out of his life and turns his back on them, and when he inevitably begins to feel lonely, he replaces those people with new friends/relationships. Such a cycle has a tendency to continue until the person catches it and learns to work on the real problem.

The narrator is sick of fighting this person, just to stay in his life and is finally throwing up his hands, saying "You're so tired of suffocating under the pressures of other human beings ["life under water"] (or "you're so tired of burning up in the problems of other human beings" ["life at this temperature"]: Both are metaphors I have used in my day-to-day life) and you're so blind to the people who love you, so just do it, close your eyes to us, turn your back on us. You're preaching to the choir, man, because I'm done with this." The narrator also mentions the "fools" who, like himself, fruitlessly exhaust themselves in futile attempts to be let in by this person (which also ties to the line, "young lad we've grown too tired").

Pain is a good teacher and hindsight is 20/20: "trap doors to endless wisdom" teach us a hard lesson. I have seen so many many friends, significant others, and family members give up on me and give me my own treatment, turning their backs and closing their eyes to me--the final surrender to helplessness. And that is what I hear when I listen to this song.

Tom Waits – Gun Street Girl Lyrics 14 years ago
First stanza: "I'm going to tell you a story about a man who fell in love with a girl from the wrong side of the tracks. Now he's in jail."
Second stanza: "He stole some money, bought a gun, got drunk on grain alcohol, blew a hole in the hood of a yellow Corvette."
Third stanza: "Bought a cheap little car got out of town as fast as he could, and disguised himself on the run."
Fourth stanza: Chorus.
Fifth stanza: "Hiding in the woods (or perhaps actually hiding in a tree in the woods) eating food that isn't the best and drowning it in strong booze. A shame for someone so young to have seen so much tragedy (or, perhaps he meant blue=sad and brown=skin color). He's hiding until they stop looking."
Sixth stanza: "Lived a comfortable life in hiding for a while..."
Seventh stanza: "But the blues caught up with him and his comfortable, hidden life turned maddening."
Eight stanza: "Still feeling safely hidden away, he got busted--eyes darting from the cop to the door."
Ninth stanza: "The Gun Street Girl ended up married to a rich man. (perhaps she didn't really want to. Perhaps she was the rich guiy's fiance` when the protagonist got involved with her...)"

My interpretation.

...or maybe he is just, as Camb06 said, a loner. Even a loner might like someone to "share the load" but for whatever reason, will not allow that to happen. Letting others in close to us gives them the power to hurt us. I'm doing what I can to grow out of this philosophy, but it's still buried down there and to this day, I keep to myself by default before catching my bad habit and sharing my pain with those I love, who want to help. At any rate, this song makes me feel simultaneously more isolated, as well as less so. It's also fucking fantastic.

The Alan Parsons Project – Old And Wise Lyrics 14 years ago
Even I, at twenty-one, am choked up by this song. It seems to me (as per my personal interpretation, of course) that he is not yet old and wise, and somewhat torn between contemplations of the finity of life and the pain of youth. The lines referring to the shadows approaching/surrounding him, are [obviously] a metaphor; it is his certainty that is enshadowed. As I'm still young, my future seems to stretch on almost infinitely. However, there will come a time when I am less certain of just how long I have left. What I can identify with personally, are the "bitter words" lines. The affections of certain others in my life are terribly important to me, and their words have the power to turn my world upside down. I can do my best to keep my sanity and my health, but I draw a great deal of my strength, from the future; hoping and telling myself that one day, things won't be so hard; one day I'll have the strength to handle this; one day simple words won't have such power over me. Sadly, this will probably not be the case; expecting to one day be immune to bitter words seems a fallacy; no matter how old or wise, I will always be human; but I can hope.

I was thinking he had some secret grief that he couldn't tell anyone, for whatever reason. Maybe he's ashamed of something he has done or that has happened to him, or maybe he'll be in some kind of trouble if he talks... just guessing.

Pinback – Off By 50 Lyrics 15 years ago
It seems that there are some in here who would rather not acknowledge that the evil subject of this song does not have to be something traditionally considered evil, like Satan; it can be something truly malignant in our world like religion in general, and the wars it causes.

The title, of course, refers to the fact that the number of the beast, which for some time now has been thought to be 666, is in fact 616, as per the 2005 discovery. It makes you wonder how many other mistranslations there are; and how confident Christians are that the undiscovered mistranslations are the literal word of God, living their lives around them and making judgments based on them.

The first few lines refer to either: A) fossil fuels and minerals being stripped of the earth, or B) the earth being battered and ruined (war?).

"To pave the way. Forced. Primed" refers to the people destroying the world (war?), after having been shaped, coerced, "forced," "primed," to do it (war over religion?).
"To kick the very seeds from their heights." refers to shaking the foundation of the planet (war?), or B) planting seeds (planting the seeds of a new era?--war? Nuclear holocaust?)

"If I believed...You're the one they talk about//''...call upon" refers to God. Why is he letting this happen? "Is God willing to prevent evil, but not able? Then he is not omnipotent.//Is he able, but not willing? Then he is malevolent.//Is he both able, and willing? Then whence cometh evil?//Is he neither willing, nor able? Then why call him God?" (Epicurus).

"Mindless. Hateful." The unthinking faithful who cannot question what they know is untrue, and allowing that fallacy to fill them with hate (for gays, blacks [sons of Ham/Canaan], followers of other religions).
I'm not entirely sure about the "There is no such thing as free lunch//There is no such thing at all" bit. It could refer to what goky said about how any alternative will have its problems. This argument could be used in favor of war, or in favor of its alternatives.

In the final two lines: "Why would they go through this again?//Is there no other way?" would refer to the fact that we are at war once again (and religion has been a factor).

Thoughts?

Dammit! I searched weakly for lyrics to this song, decided I wouldn't find them and proceeded to type them up myself. Then I discovered that the little hidden song had a name and then I found that there were lyrics everywhere, including here (which is where I had planned to post them).

I actually prefer mine (since they're a bit better punctuated and a tiny bit ("Never do!") more complete... so I'm going to post them here! :D

Saturday eveni- ...

Saturday evening,
A quarter to five,
I would see him arrive at the door.

Pushed you aside,
As he staggered and sighed,
Spitting alcohol over the floor.

A storm is a-brew,
And it's sure to fall soon,
As I look at you from the shore.

So,
You better hold on,
'Cause it's Saturday night,
And your friends are all out,
And you feel like shit 'cause they never called you,
No they never called you,
No they,
Never called, never called,
Never bloody ever-

Call me a name and I'll hit you again,
You're a slut,
You're a bitch,
You're a whore.
Talk to your daddy in that tone of voice,
There's a belt hangin' over the door.

So you run to your room,
And you hide in your room,
Thinking o'how you could settle the score.

But,
Saturday night,
At a quarter to six,
And your friends are all out,
But you live in the sticks,
Still they never called you,
No they never called you,
No they,
Never called, never called,
Never bloody ever called.

Blue flashing light last Saturday night,
Brought the neighbors all out on the street.

We watched as the firemen carried you out,
Then we stared at eachother's feet.

Now everyone sees and yet nobody says,
"Are we all just afraid of the heat?"

But,
It's Saturday night,
And I'm lyin' alone,
In the bed that I made,
Disconnected the phone,
Still they never called you,
No they never called you,
No they,
Never called, never called,
Never bloody ever called.

Never bloody ever-
Never do!
Never do!

Actually, I think sein514, was close but not dead on. I think this song is about a relationship that is dead but not over. There is no love anymore but the partners wish there was and remember the hope they felt in the beginning, that we all feel--they hoped they would be in love forever.

"But I wake up quick,
And I wake up sick as you abandon me into these fields of rank and file..."
He has become aware of the lovelessness.

"...'cause you're not through//they're not done with you."
It hasn't quite been officially ended.

Beck – Cold Brains Lyrics 16 years ago
I think he's using metaphors about death as a larger metaphor for something else. Perhaps he's making a "Pink Floydian" wall around himself or perhaps he's just depressed and drifting through life like a corpse. When you're depressed, everything loses its appeal and you go where you're pulled and drift aimlessly if left alone. Your mind as well as the rest of you can just feel empty and fail to appreciate any aspect of life (meaning that I interpret the "evacuated heavens" as his mind and the "bird of song," "heard no longer," would refer to complete loss of interest.

Pink Floyd – Outside the Wall Lyrics 16 years ago
no no, Goodbye Cruel World is the completion of the wall. He is saying "Goodbye, cruel world, I now sever myself from you. Goodbye." And in Hey You, he realizes his mistake and starts calling out and his cries for help go unnoticed due to the nature of the wall.

Now "In the Flesh" and "Outside the Wall" run together because people continue to create walls. I mean sure, Pink's was destroyed but others are still building their own. So it's the circle of life (or the circle of abuse, I suppose): One manages to lose his wall but another builds his own.

The only thing I can really see here so far is some kind of environmentalist message... and I don't know if environmentalism is a message Pinback pushes often (I can't derive a meaning from most of their music), and I'm not much for the ol' environmentalism, but I do see him kind of singing to those of us who are wasteful and are attempting to dry up the planet's resources. We base our interpretations on our own feelings, and I just so happen to think "I've lost it" means he's lost the control he once had of the situation and "I've lost you" is an obvious side-effect of losing control. My situation involves losing control of the situation and making a fool of myself because I realized I lost her a long time ago.

I figure the Pinback reference was probably dropped in there because they wanted to say "I miss you" at the end of a song without stealing Slint's 1991 thunder... or, I suppose my secondary opinion would be that they just wanted to mention Slint in there for fun.

Anyway the comments before mine pretty much sum up this song so just read those and all is well, mine doesn't even matter at this point. LET THIS SONG BE A DISCUSSION BOARD HENCEFORTH!

It almost seems like saying "That's it, fuck the cycle, I'm staying single," is actually part of the cycle.
