Sufjan Stevens – The Predatory Wasp of the Palisades Is Out to Get Us! Lyrics 18 years ago
Serilliant, I completely agree. Being bundled up with clothes, on the floor, "thinking outrageously" and writing in cursive in a journal, just.... screams adolescence. I think the best friend incident is indeed a flashback, but not from that far into the future.

Secondly... I had always interpreted this as being between two boys. Someone said that if Sufjan had intended this to be from a woman's perspective he would've made it more clear, and I agree. They're very young, and just discovering their feelings... the 'best friend' seems to be more conflicted with this than the narrator, thus, the running away.

Innocence, yes, but laced with the dawning of realization.

The Velvet Underground – The Gift Lyrics 18 years ago
I was thirteen when I first heard this song... I picked up "WL/WH" at Circuit City after seeing the Strokes compared to the Velvets in a review. Imagine my surprise- and delight- upon being introduced to this brilliance...

Lou Reed has the most wonderful sense of humor, don't you think? And Cale's soft-spoken Welsh is perfect for it, somehow.

Of course it's about S&M.
"Shiny, shiny, shiny boots of leather..." Man, I LOVE this song.

I've always seen irony here... but on a parallel with an honest plea for "propriety" and the like.

Tubesocks, I love your explanation.

I love this song. Simultaneously heartbreaking and peaceful... no one does it better.

My Favorite – L = P Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with that, definitely... it is about mental instability and being afraid of oneself. I think "to us it is an art" is about the way this condition becomes an identity to people... and the continuity one feels with others in similar situations. Look at the Conor Oberst depression phenomenon; people can get carried away. Of course that's on a far more superficial level, glamorizing self-destruction. Eh, who knows.
