If you watch the film clip in conjunction then the meaning becomes more apparent. Also knowing that Madonna's mother died of breast cancer when she was 8 years old also helps. Taking these factors into account, the song meaning becomes more apparent. Madonna wasn't abused as a child but she did in reality run from her father's extremely strict catholic upbringing when she got the chance. She and her father are estranged in real life. The song would suggest that he was simply cold after the death of her mother and that he ruled with an iron fist, but not abuse. |

LOL @ mira love. No, it certainly isn't the most tasteful of songs and luckily the meaning wasn't too obvious to little kiddies (like myself back then) and thus allowing it play time on the radio. I admit I never saw the clip until a few years ago when it was on RAGE one night. I guess that one wasn't rated PG back then. |

I definitely don't see the guy portrayed in this song as having set out to be a loser. The last sign is a dead giveaway to that. It's one of those vicious cycle things. He became like his father and he's going to make his own kids believe they're no better either.
I don't think this guy really should be seen as either a victim or a perpetrator...more that this is simply what it is. A huge sector of people with no motivation to better themselves. |

I find it astounding how many people really believe/d that Maynard said 'fat tomato'.
Anyway, this is my favourite APC song and I find it very feasible that it's about an addiction and that apples refer to drugs. It really does sound like he's singing about a person though. Maybe the addiction is just as strong as the will and force of another person. |

I absolutely love the Benneli version of this song (violin). It has that 'tingle down the spine' quality, though I don't much care for the electronic cacophony of sounds towards the end. It spoils such a purely melancholy piece. |

This song was adapted from a traditional piece of music. I don't think there's any doubt as to what it means if you are from the British Isles but I guess a lot of young people today would be unaware of the internal war within Ireland. People fighting each other over religion. It turned what was a beautiful place into a series of wastelands.
I find it to be a sad, yet uplifting song. It's a song of hope. |

Tinderbox - In this case Simple Minds were approached to record the song. Upon seeing it, Jim Kerr was skeptical as it wasn't their type of music. However, more than anything he and the other members wanted to break into the American market. The American market had always been the ultimate goal for them...so they recorded it. It worked but I don't think Jim Kerr ever felt for that song like he did for all the ones he wrote himself.
Anyway, that's what I got from reading 1001 articles on Simple Minds in my younger years. I was a huge fan. |

The lead singer once said in a biography or article that I read, that there was no specific meaning to the songs of that time...only imagery. He chose lyrics for how they sounded, not what they meant.
So, yes...they are a little like a madness or dream. I don't think it was drug induced though. There has never been any correlation between the band members and drugs to hit the media. |
