Joanna Newsom – Baby Birch Lyrics 14 years ago
You really think that at 28, Joanna Newsom is most likely giving up on ever settling down and having children?

While we can't be entirely sure on any details of her private life, in a very recent article and interview it was written that she was dating Andy Samberg. Regardless of that though, I find it a bit odd to think that at 28 she just decided, "Well, I'm an old maid now. Might as well write songs about how no one will impregnate me."

I'm not saying the song is for sure about an abortion, or even a miscarriage, but I have serious doubts that Joanna Newsom's thought process follows yours.

She does give this baby a gender, which seems awfully specific. And in another song, sings, "I saw a life, and I called it mine. I saw it, drawn so sweet and fine, and I had begun to fill in all the lines, right now to what we'd name her." That sentiment strikes me as more concrete than simply giving up on the idea of motherhood, but rather detailing motherhood to a certain child that never happened. I suppose the child could have never actually been anything more than a thought, but I still seriously doubt that she's saying goodbye to motherhood in general. 28 is certainly not too old to have children.

Also, how do you account for the violent imagery at the end of the song?

I have yet to devote a lot of thought to this song, so I'm not sure what it's about, but I can't see your interpretation making sense.

Joanna Newsom – Baby Birch Lyrics 14 years ago
Wait, but isn't it just as presumptuous to say "I find Joanna to be..." followed by your long list? Also, Malia said, "She's a young woman with maternal instincts," which is a bit less dramatic than saying she has "strong maternal instincts."

I don't know, your analysis, and claims that Joanna is deeply fascinated by social expectations, etc. seems to be to be just as "presumptuous" as saying that she's writing of something because she has maternal instinct.

I don't think either one of you are wrong, nor do I have a stance other than Joanna seems to be deeply interested in motherhood, along with a few others topics, easily supported by the common references. I simply don't understand why you would call one opinion presumptuous and then state your own, as if it is truth, when it doesn't appear to be any more or less valid.

I have some corrections, but a note that I'm not entirely sure about them either (they're in caps):

i held the COLD TIN LID up to my lip
at the shrine of a thousand arms, MY LORD,
my eyes DO SIT

you want your love? LOVE,
come and get your love
i only took it
back because i thought you DID

how my ears did ring
at the municipal pound
AT that OLD HANGDOG
toOoOoOoOoOoO WHICH I WAS BOUND
CURL ROUND THE FIRE OF LOVE
WHEN NOBODY WANTS YOU
well come on darlin
i could use someone like you around

i am not like you
i aint from this place
and i do reserve the right to repeat
ALL OF my same MISTAKES
but in the night
LIKE YOU
I'LL CERTAINLY BITE AND CHEW
well i can find
i never seem to lose the taste

what a horrible face
I FEEL ME MAKE

all day you hassle me
with TRIFLES
black nose of the dog
as cold as a rifle
INDICATING WITH A NUDGE
GOD
NO GOD
GOD NO GOD
sweet APPRAISING eye of the dog
BLINK ONCE IF GOD
TWICE IF NO GOD

MY MOMMA MAY BE
ashamed of me
with all of my finery
carrying on WHOOPING IT ON
to the early morn
lost alone among the maddening revelry
SHOOT I CAN PASS
honey i CAN pass
particularly when i STOP TO TIP MY GLASS

i'll be a sport and have a go
at that old song
SINGING UNABASHED
about THE city girls with the ribbon bows

well i take my god to task
i take my DOGGONE god to task.

Cheers!

Okay. That wasn't meant to be an insult. You're kind of discounting the meaning if you think that she "might" just "mention" motherhood.

I think it'd be very easy to write a paper on the theme of motherhood in Joanna Newsom songs. It's definitely reoccuring and even seems to be the central idea in more than one (arguably, though of course nothing is definite). I like that she repeates ideas, or at least themes. I like the the term "cold clay" can be found throughout, that she uses non-traditional words and sounds to accompany her lyrics commonly and I like that motherhood can be found in so much of her work. It ties things together, and it's wonderful.

I can't remember where I saw this... but there's a book called "The Runaway Bunny" about a baby bunny that wants to run away from his home/mother, and his mother follows him no matter what.

I think Joanna is obsessed with motherhood. She writes of it all the time.

I realize this is a rough sketch of the lyrics. Some fans oppose posting incomplete versions of new songs, but I think it's important to sing along. I will edit and change as necessary, and certainly when the complete version gets released, I will change it (unless it is a Be A Woman/Only Skin transformation--it'd be useful to have an older version up here.) Enjoy and tell me if you have any ideas where the lyrics are weak--especially in the last part about the butcher, the baker and candlestick maker. :)

Radiohead – Fake Plastic Trees Lyrics 16 years ago
THIS IS SO IMPORTANT.

This morning I was sure that the song was just sad, observing the world and the people and how fake everything is. Now, rereading/analyzing further, I have some new thoughts.

I saw Stranger Than Fiction a week or so ago, and I think an idea that film was trying to get across plays heavily in the meaning of this song (to me).

I think there is the slight story of a woman he is in love with that is married, but who has had an affair with him before. This couple however is "fake", somewhat like the the couple someone mentioned earlier that they were housesitting for. Everything in there life is fake, while the narrator feels all too human. Humans are never perfect; "I'm only human" is a common term used when excusing mistakes. Yet someone who is plastic can be molded, like the woman's husband. The narrator, by the end, wishes he too were polystyrene, but he is not--he is human.

This whole feeling is both sad (the falseness of the world and people, also the longing for someone you cannot or will not be had) but also comforting, because, like Harold Crick learner--these things, these falsities: rubber plants, watering cans, fake plastic loves and wristwatches, can save our lives.

Beautiful.

Pavement – Gold Soundz Lyrics 16 years ago
Okay, so, I do not think the meaning is clear. After careful examination, this is what I SEE but do not necessarily think it is there:

An abusive relationship, finally the woman tells somebody. Before they can help her, he murders her, locks her up and goes on the run, perhaps to Mexico where he just drinks and thinks about how perfect they are/were together, but he can't go back, and all he can do is remember her voice.

Uh, yeah. I really don't think that was intended, but I mean, it's the only clear meaning I can derive.

Strange how Flight 180 is the flight in Final Destination. However, I don't think this is a referance. Perhaps the lyricist things he is above everyone else metaphorically, and that's the only place he feels comfortable, in a physical sense also.

Bishop Allen – The Monitor Lyrics 16 years ago
I think Bishop Allen (the band...I don't know specific names, so the band is a "he" for further purposes) is questioning the meaning of life without living through something like this. He recognizes moments he has pushed through, and does so, yet can only continue to the question life. He is examing how some men that live through things gain a better respect for life, and for that, he respects them.

Bright Eyes – A Celebration Upon Completion Lyrics 16 years ago
My hope is that those of you who are not taking this song (or any of Conor's really) in a way beyond the bare surface that somewhat resembles your life, will come back to this page someday and feel silly. Also for referring to yourself as "emo".

I feel that the most important line is "the moon is gone and the sun has took its place". We also must consider the title. I believe "A Celebration Upon Completion" refers to his grandfather and mother's life. As their lives ended, there was a celebration (and rightly so), which also allowed the sun to appear. The grandfather in this story is the "moon", or called Moon. The end line, I think, means that the moon, which is merely a reflection of the sun, goes down to allow the SUN, the real source of life, to live.

I see this ultimately as a hopeful, growing up song. The narrator is not in the midst of this happiness, but sees it possible, and at the passing of his grandfather (who he perhaps felt mirrored what his feelings were, or could be) he is then allowed to shine on his own.

Animal Collective – Unsolved Mysteries Lyrics 16 years ago
i think this song is about how happy times turn so immediatly into memories, and the way this affects how people grow. the first stanza is really what gives me that feeling, of course, but the part about the eyes seems like an evolution, which ends up being dead. also, she turns into jack the ripper when she is "womanly" and stopped crying like a child.

perhaps a hint that there is no real need to grow up?

to me all animal collective does is write songs about growing up (with the most brilliant minds ever!!!). they are certainly the band that keeps me immature, and i certainly love it. :]

Ben Gibbard – Carolina Lyrics 16 years ago
I thought it directly addressed abusive relationships in this line,

"Every scream went bleeding through these paper walls
And all the make-up in the world couldn't hide the scars"

Also, just because Ben Gibbard is a "poetic s.o.b." doesn't mean the obvious meaning isn't the final meaning. There is no way he is talking about himself. He constantly refers to things as if a woman, such as the above line. Make-up. Ben Gibbard does not wear make-up. Why would the line, "Boys don't assault the girls they like" even have been written if he'd been referring to a gay relationship?

The thing about "poetic s.o.b's" is that they can take numerous point of views, without meaning it literally. It's quite a concept...characters in poetry.

Elliott Smith – Coast to Coast Lyrics 17 years ago
Here's a theory that just shot into my head that I am somewhat proud of.

At the end, with all the voices, it's really overwhelming. You can sometimes catch some of the words, but most of it is jumbled and franctic, and since it's poetry, all dealing with emotions, life, whatever. Perhaps the numerous voices lapping over eachother were meant to somehow represent his mind, the way it drove him crazy. Then the "that's why" is saying that's why he...did drugs? Wanted to commit suicide? I don't know, but it's pretty intense.

finally!! whoever would NOT accept a weather as an artist...but i wanted these lyrics up really bad. i'm hoping someone will come across weather and think they're a weather, etc. etc.

so here's what i think this song means: someone is debating killing themselves and haunting their ex-lover. in the end, i think that the feel better somehow signifies they choose not to.

there are a lot of mistakes, i think. the lyrics are pretty accurate, but in many places the words i here don't seem to make much sense. i'd love for suggestinos.

Bright Eyes – Saturday as Usual Lyrics 17 years ago
while the lyrics are very basic, the whole idea of feeling stuffy and scared is pretty...awesome i guess.

i don't know, i just feel like people get this way when they're growing up...maturing or something. they start to see the world differently, they get scared. and then of course, they move past that, they figure themselves out. so while these lyrics themselves are groundbreaking, i'm a bit...amazed that conor at 13 (14, 15 whatever) was going through this.

when i was those ages i was still a very little girl, worrying about all the wrong things. this song just lets you know that conor is smart, i guess. that he's different and he's confused, but he's ahead of a lot of people.

you know, i don't think many people ever even hit this stage. people accept what the lives they're told they're supposed to have. while conor ultimately has many problems, i don't think that is one of them.
