Screaming Trees – More Or Less Lyrics 18 years ago
i agree that the screaming trees are really amazing.
this song reminds me of suicide...and it's effects on a relationship
"Now that we've run this road so many times
Tonight it will not take us home" i think this line is in reference to a repetitive event that finally pushes the narrator to the brink of his existence, to finally kill him, hence, the same path we've been down so many times will not take us to the place it usually does.
"Gonna go to that deep river
Where the water's moving slow" is a reference to the actual suicide, possibly a drowning or jumping off of a bridge...possibly a meaningful place for the narrator to die because it holds memories
"Feels like there's nothing to explain
nothing left to hear
One more or less it's all the same" the lyrics posted are wrong here...it's nothing left to hear rather than nothing left hear. the narrator is saying to the other person that nothing he could make his decision easier to understand, so there is nothing left for that person to hear. and one more or less it's all the same...is the narrator's way of saying his death doesn't matter. one more or less person in the world, it doesn't change anything.
"Now that it's feeling so much colder
(Coming back again)
Just be glad that it's all over" the first two lines can either be a reference to how cold the river is and it's moving tides (because rivers do rise and fall on their banks and they do have strong currents, like the undertow of the ocean). or it could be a reference to how the narrator/ his relationship already feels cold and dead. The last line, just be glad that it's all over, is the narrator saying just be glad that i'm gone, i won't be around to bother you anymore.
"Now that we've closed our eyes so many times
Tonight I cannot see a thing" perhaps a reference to some kind of mutual self-medication within the relationship...like saying, now that we've ignored our future for so long, i can't see having one. or it could be a reference to getting so fixated on his problems that he can only see them and is blind to anything good, he can't even see the possibility that something good will happen.

though, it might just be about a break from a dysfunctional relationship, and i complicated things.

Nine Inch Nails – Every Day Is Exactly the Same Lyrics 18 years ago
did anyone notice that the opening notes of every day is exactly the same are almost exactly the same as the ending notes of closer? the song is about having a routine life, and wanting to end it all with suicide...but maybe it's also a continuation of closer.

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 18 years ago
hi alexbravo! welcome back! songmeanings has really been lacking something essential in all the time that you have been gone. i had no choice but to take the bait you left dangling in front of us the last time you posted. so, dearest alex, did you know kurt personally? can you tell me, when exactly, did kurt start buying into the hype about him being a genius? can you quote ten sources saying that you are the definitive judge of best rock musicians of all time? we each have our opinions, i will thank you kindly if you refrain from cluttering our minds with yours. i am so glad to hear that you seem to think that having made it past thirty has turned you into a man (or woman?) of great intellect, and that you could not possibly be outsmarted by someone younger than you, because you seem to be the only one fooled by this delusion. i'm also glad to hear you are proud that you assume you got your pubic hairs before most people that access and post on this site....god knows we all need at least one great accomplishment to call our own, and clearly that one is yours.

Cracker – Low Lyrics 18 years ago
actually, those lyrics are wrong. (that happens a lot on this site) the lyrics are actually 'stoned'.
i think that in this case, it's a reference to heroin, because heroin is a mellowing depressant drug, as opposed to pot which just gives you that light airy "high" feeling. i think if it was meant as pot, they wouldn't have used the word 'low'.

in any case, it's a really good song. the tone is kind of remorseful and surreal, it reminds me of being all spaced out while everything else is moving around you at a seemingly bizarre fast pace

Nine Inch Nails – Hurt Lyrics 18 years ago
The whole thing is about pain and an eventual suicide...but these lines "i will let you down, i will make you hurt" i used to think signified the ways he feels he has let everyone in his life down repeatedly, but now i believe it's in reference to someone, a close friend maybe, who knew of his behavior and tried to save him from himself...acknowledging that his suicide would really fuck them up, saying that they never should have gotten close to him because that would be the end result of the relationship...just pain.

Marilyn Manson – Minute of Decay Lyrics 18 years ago
it's not about apathy... "Not much left to love, too tired today to hate"...this line doesn't signify apathy, it signifies the onset of sadness. If there isn't anything to love, then anger is a productive way to feel about a situation...because anger gives you the strength to change it. But it also has the potential to be sadness or to change into sadness...and sadness about a situation is counterproductive...most of the time leaving the person to feel hopeless about a situation and to also to start to take sides with the people against you, making you agree that you are at fault even when you aren't. A lot of Marilyn Manson's actions are misinterpreted...he is hope for everyone that feels outcasted because a lot of his songs are rage filled towards the judgemental and brainwashed society. This rage gives him and his fans the strength to say that it is not them that is wrong with the world...even if they are outnumbered. but this is him giving into sadness...a breakdown in self esteem. "i'd love to live this lie" is saying he isn't always strong enough to remain himself, thinking it would be so much easier, maybe even happier, if he just conformed. "a lack of pain a lack of hope a lack of anything to say there is no cure for what is killing me" this is his descent into apathy...but mostly it is apathy towards himself...unable to cure or even describe the feelings that have come over him "Im on my way down now, i'd like to take you with me" further descent...and the urge to take someone with him, the urge to have somone feel just as bad as he does. misery loves company. he wants someone to hurt like him

Foo Fighters – DOA Lyrics 18 years ago
This doesn't necessarily have to be about a breakup...it could be about two close friends that are trying to pull through issues and they rely on each other to do so...the narrator is committing suicide but is talking to the friend that tried to keep him alive. He's saying that it doesn't matter what the friend says anymore, he can't take it. And he mention's the other friends problems "bet your life there's something killing you". and then continues to make references about how he tried to save his friend much like his friend tried to save him. "It's a shame we have to die my dear, no one's getting out of here alive" this is his admission that he does not believe either of them will be able to pull through, that he is killing himself and eventually his friend will too. DOA is his way of saying that they couldn't really help each other anyway, they were already so damaged that they were beyond repair (mentally dead, if not yet physically)

Courtney Love – Never Gonna Be The Same Lyrics 18 years ago
it's her goodbye song to him. she acknowledges how things will never be the same because of his death. a lot of people miss that fact that a good bulk of her songs after his death are about him (ever before his death...Doll Parts started out as part of a letter she faxed him) and his death has dominated a large part of her emotional life. I can not come over to you can be in reference of two things...how she could not come to him right before he died, because she was in rehab, and how she cannot die and join him in the afterlife because she has responsibilities in life and other loved ones (Frances) and so he will have to wait for her. If you want food water shelter are all references to how she took care of him...should have stood in your way is a reference to how she feels guilty for not doing enough to stop his suicide (she chose to keep his suicidal tendencies secret...not even telling his Rehab Exodus...if they had been notified, they would have put him on suicide watch...then he wouldn't have been able to leave and kill himself...not that i blame her for his death, if someone really wants to die they will find a way) if you want the needle and the spoon is a reference to his drug habit...heroin. And most poignant and sad in the whole song is the end where she is softly singing goodnight and goodbye at the end. perhaps this is her way of finally laying him to rest in her mind and saying goodbye to him

R.E.M. – Let Me In Lyrics 18 years ago
It's about Kurt...and it does matter, at least slightly that it's about Kurt. "Yeah, all the stars drip down like butter,
Promises are sweet,
We hold out our pans, lift our hands to catch them.
We eat them up, drink them up, up, up, up"...This stanza is a comment on how most people lacking in confidence themselves believe that Fame is the same thing as Love...and that's why it's so attractive. Kurt was depressed even as a young teenager, so naturally fame was attractive to him...the promise of fame seemed to him like the love and acceptance that he craved so badly, and how he went running straight into fame head first. Nirvana's popularity was NO accident...Kurt methodically planned much of his career.
"Heeey Let me in...." This is the most crazy haunting line ever. Now, with that out of my system...Kurt loved Stipe's music, he was a major musical influence, and they were about to collaberate on a song just before Kurt's death. Let me in is kind of demanding to know all the hurt and pain that kurt experienced with the hopes that it would allieve some of his suffering. He was notorious for withdrawing from people and isolating himself in extremely damaging ways...never letting people in. Micheal wants to let him know that he would have listened, that could should have told him. In essence, Stipe wishes that somehow he could have saved him.
" only wish that I could hear you whisper down,
Mister fisherman, to a less peculiar ground.
He gathered up his loved ones and he brought them all around
To say goodbye, nice try." Only wish that i could hear you whisper down is kind of like saying, if only i had known...i should have paid more attention to your music, to your words, and then i would have known that something was very very wrong. Mr.Fisherman....this can be a reference to several things. It could be a reference to the fact that kurt was often compared to Jesus...by overzealous fans and also because of his uncanny likeness to DaVinci's depiction of Jesus. Likewise, he suffered as Jesus did...perhaps not for the sins of fellow man, but suffer he did. Also it could be because his clothing was somewhat old man fisherman like...his mohair cardigans for example. And he had a connection to the water....he titled one album "from the muddy banks of the wishkah", falsly claimed to have slept under the young street bridge, and wrote a song called something in the way about that claim in which he sings "It's okay to eat fish because they don't have any feet". He gathered all his friends and loved ones around and tried to say goodbye, nice try....could be in reference to the HUGE intervention organized in vain not long before his death...a last ditch effort by most of his friends and family. It could also be in reference to the mass gathering of his fans and family after news of his death broke out (which is more likely) and nice try is the reminder that it does not matter that he leaves physically, because he will never be forgotten, we will never say goodbye, and we will never let go of him or his memory.
"I had a mind to try to stop you. Let me in. Let me in.
I’ve got tar on my feet and I can’t see.
All the birds look down and laugh at me.
Clumsy, crawling out of my skin."
I had a mind to try and stop you is an easy one. This is Stipe saying that he wanted Kurt to let him in, but he would not indulge kurt in his self destructive behavior...he would have exposed him, but only to the people that would keep him alive and help him. He would not have let him die. The other three lines can either be him taking on Kurt's persona in first person...In which case he may be refering to heroin in i've got tar on my feet (west coast heroin is called black tar) and Kurt was extremely upset with himself for being addicted and being marred by this addiction...tar is extremely sticky and hard to get rid of....if he's got tar on his feet everyone knows and he feels ashamed because he is tracking something ugly around. I can't see...this might be symbolizing kurt's cynisism and unhappiness that distorted his view of the world and made is so painful and ugly all the time...it also may symbolize his inability to see a future (or at least a good one). All the bird's look down and laugh at me...clumsy crawling out of my skin. Kurt's self-consciousness. He felt he wasn't good enough, he was clumsy, people were laughing at him.
but these three lines can also be Stipe looking at Kurt, and if this is the case i think that the lines are a reference to him feeling impure next to Kurt. When Kurt was alive, and even now he had this absolute innocence to him despite everything...he had a good heart and he felt everyone else's pain. Such goodness might even make Stipe feel unworthy of Kurt's presence...Kurt was no angel but there was still that purity about him that makes his death even more tragic.
And this is a note about the instrumentals towards the end of the song....does this remind anyone else of airy children's music? this is the part that really got to me...i actually cried because it reminded me of Kurt being a child....and not knowing all the undeserving pain that he was in for. I think it was supposed to do that. Again with the innocence and purity theme....but it's true and it really hits the gravity of the situation home.

Nirvana – Rape Me Lyrics 18 years ago
This song has dual meanings...it started out as an anti-rape song, which is obvious when you listen to the original version that kurt recorded (on the boxed set)...but it was also personal, and became more so in the final recording that has lyrics here. (by the way...it isn't "taste me". it's hate me, do it and do it again, waste me...rape me my friend") "my favorite inside source" is a reference to the slanderous vanity fair article written about kurt and courtney. and it isn't about someone who enjoys being used or raped...it is about someone who is fed up and is using it to convey what the rapist must be thinking about them, while also letting them know that they are wrong...go ahead, rape me, i won't feel it because i'm less than human anyway. I suspect that the original version was not only anti-rape, but it was also about kurt personally...it's only speculation but i think kurt wrote it about different aspects of himself. this is not unreasonable as kurt would change things if he thought it revealed to much about himself (the lyrics to something in the way were changed for this reason) because he feared exposing himself too much emotionally. I believe that it IS anti-rape, but i also think that he uses that explanation to guise lyrics that were also about himself. many of the original lyrics coincide with feelings of insecurity and sadness, along with the desire to be understood and to be saved.

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue Lyrics 18 years ago
the people mentioned in the song are not necessarily coming into contact with the narrator (except maybe the young kentucky girl), but that they are people in pain that you might not expect. Specifically i think that the southern girl with the scarlet drawl is a girl who is devastating in her speech...probably someone who is witty, sharp-tongued, but who also says things that are a little off-key and worrisome. Wave goodbye to ma and pa is a reference to her suicide. Soft spoken with a broken jaw, step outside but not to brawl...this is a man (who gives me the mental picture of a cowboy, but that is probably not an accurate portrayal of the lyrics) who everyone expects to be tough and almost two dimensional in his feelings, yet is kind of beaten down by memories to the point where all the "fire" (that is the word i use to represent liveliness, because i think liveliness is too wishy washy and doesn't capture what i really mean) has left him and he's kind of this really self-conscious fragile person. The young kentucky girl...she does come in contact with the narrator, i think for two reasons, to contrast between the pain of the narrator and her sort of young, lively potentional, and possibly even to give a glimpse at one way someone becomes isolated...in this case, her eagerness to be loved, to please...her push-up bra, the way she is engaging herself sexually with the narrator

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Scar Tissue Lyrics 18 years ago
I don't think it is about self harm literally. "scar tissue that i wish you saw" is a reference for the desire to have all the pain that is internal become external. When someone gets harmed physically, they usually have something to show what they have been through, a bruise, a cut, a SCAR. but when things rip you to shreds mentally there is nothing on the outside to even begin to suggest the wounds that have been inflicted upon you. It's about feeling isolated because of all the damage, and wanting people to know the personal hell that you have gone through/are living in.

Cobain can you hear the spheres...this is the only line i have a comment about. it is an old claim of the philosopher Aristotle that the stars are attached to crystal spheres that are spinning in constant rotation around earth. These spheres emit a harmonious sound that only the truly inspired can hear...the beings closest to enlightenment. the line is saying the Kurt was truly inspired and is asking if he has heard the spheres (and it also maybe be a reference to the name of his band, Nirvana...which is total enlightenment in Buddhism)

Red Hot Chili Peppers – Otherside Lyrics 18 years ago
this song is about depression, if you want to put it very simply...but it's more than just that, it's illustrating the way that bad memories will haunt you for the rest of your life, and once they have happened they will change you and you can never again go back to the state you were in before they happened...basically, nothing can make the memory go away, so that pain that goes along with them will never go away. I think it's about a life that is just fucked up in general "slittin my throat is all i ever"...suggesting that the person in the song can't remember a time when they didn't feel that suicide might be the best thing going for them. it also included different aspects that hint at those memories, the loss of a loved one "candidate for a soul mate bled", and i think the line "how long will i slide?" is the writer admitting that while he can't do anything to improve the situation, they wish that someone else would notice and save him.
