Part of this song is actually taken from a children's show called Das Sandmännchen (The Little Sandman). Das Sandmännchen (The Little Sandman) is a TV show from Germany that started in the mid-1950s. Every night the show would come on and the das Sandmännchen would tell bedtime stories. Each show started out with "Nun, liebe Kinder, gebt fein Acht. Ich habe euch etwas mitgebracht" ("Now, dear children, pay attention. I have brought something for you"). This should sound similar already. The working title for "Mein Herz brennt" was actually "Sandmann" ("Sandman"). Basically das Sandmännchen was nice and good, but the subject of the song that Till has dreamed up is quite the opposite. In fact, he was even worse in a previous incarnation of the song played at the Fanabend concert in April 2000 at the Knaack Klub, Berlin. In the old version, a man has killed the real sandman and stolen his hair to look like him. He shows up for the children instead of who they were expecting. There is another sort of double meaning here. If the line is read as "Tod der Scheide" it would be "until the death of the vagina" and not "until death, which would seperate" ("Tod, der scheide"). The whole song is a play on German wedding vows (Wollen Sie einander lieben und achten und die Treue halten bis dass der Tod euch scheidet? - Do you want to love and respect each other and to remain faithful, until death seperates you?).
