Wild Sweet Orange – House of Regret Lyrics 12 years ago
I have heard this song thousands of times, and it still gives me shivers. When they get to the end of the song (my favorite part) and start screaming "Knock Down the House of regret" it brings tears to my eyes. Pretty self explanatory though. He's saying free yourself from the guilt you feel about all the things in your life that in the grand scheme of things are really out of your control. Just live. Don't ponder things from your past too much because regret can become a house we build for ourselves to live in, so knock it down and pave it over, til you're born anew.

Bedhead – Lares and Penates Lyrics 14 years ago
These lyrics are close, but not 100%.

Lookin' at this empty room
Hearing these sounds, Whose distance I can't measure
Reading these words
I hope this is someone else's pleasure
It's no use, I Tried it, Look at this I know I can't hide it
The spectres are rabid, and it's this room that they inhabit

Death Cab for Cutie – Broken Yolk in Western Sky Lyrics 14 years ago
To me, it sounds like Ben is saying "and you cannot divorce a tomb" definately making me think that the torn flesh and broken bones are to be taken literally as in the fact that he threw himself out of a moving van to kill himself. A van because he kicked open a sliding door, and I don't think any other type of motor vehicle has sliding doors. I think the person whom killed theirself in the song couldn't stand being alive without the other person in their life, so they decided they'd rather be dead. Ben could also be saying "and I could not sleep alone" instead of at all after the part about you cannot divorce the two or possibly tomb. Just playing devil's advocate here. I think it's amazing that simply changing two words in a song can give an entirely different meaning.

This song is about Isaac's mother and his childhood. The extra lines at the end of the live version from the Mural amphitheater show on 6-26-98 are fucking amazing. I also love the variation that Isaac uses with the riff. It gives the song an extra jangle.

Streetlight Manifesto – We Are The Few Lyrics 16 years ago
When I first heard this song, it gave me the image of gang members and gangs and other gang dealings. I don't mean full on italian mafioso or "from da hood" thugs, but more of a smaller, but still organized kind of gang. I think Mr. Gepetto may be the leader of this gang, the rich old guy who sits back and lets his thugs make him rich, and he doesn't care if they live or die, as long as he gets his money he is happy. I think the protagonist in the song is a member in this little gang, probably a higher up, along with his friend (who i'll talk about later) and they do jobs for Mr. Gepetto in a really shitty, slummy, shit heap of a city. I think the Protagonist is writing a letter to the boss in the beginning, and the song as a whole is explaining his dealings and various jobs with the gang, and later on in the song he decides to quit after something happens to his friend because of the gang. So the guy, along with his best friend and partner, does all these jobs for Mr. Gepetto, and he makes mad green for Mr. Gepetto, while getting shit in return, but he thinks "oh well, it's better than nothing" and takes his shitty cut with high regards. The middle of the song is just about his personal life, times with friends, relationships, partying, what he does for fun. He doesn't really like being a "bad guy" (Stop the car and I put it park, step outside, and god I hate this part) but he does what he has to do to get by. The part about "As the day fades..." has two possible explanations that fit my theory. One night his friend and himself are sent to some guys house to do a hit or maybe a robbery, maybe even just to rough a guy up a bit, or maybe they are ambushed and caught in a gunfight, can't tell for certain, but anyways, they either kill the guy or the protagonists partner dies. They possibly kill the target infront of his wife, if not she will be without him and thus they have broken up another family and ruined another life. So the protagonist becomes fed up with his lifestyle and hates what he is doing, he feels pity for the woman, he leaves but he wants to hold her and tell her it's not her fault. I think this is the less likely of the two scenarios. I find the second outcome more likely, this being that the guys partner and best friend dies during the crazyness. The protagonist knows his best friends girlfriend/wife really well, possibly having been involved with her in the past, and he feels responsible for the death of his friend. He wants to hold her and tell her its not her fault. Maybe his partner was doing these jobs in order for them to make an escape from this slum, and his wife/girlfriend feels responsible because perhaps she was fed up with the horrible place and demanded that they leave. So as the day fades, no one will come to investigate the guy's murder because in this shitty town no one really gives a damn about the street rats and their type who engage in such violent behaviour. So the protagonist decides to take matters into his own hands, and he will either kill Gepetto or turn him over to the police in order to repay him because he feels the death of his friend is Gepetto's fault. He feels he has fucked up so bad that now he has to do whats right in his own mind, killing Gepetto and ending all the violence and strife that goes on in their city due to Gepetto's crippling grip on most of it's dealings, no doubt brought about by all the things his gang has done to the city under his command. I can't really explain the "I never wanted this.." part, but I would say that the protagonist and his close friends and fellow gang members, his recently deceased partners wife/girlfriend included, never wanted their good friend to die or to have done the horrible things that they have in order to survive, but they have to look at how the rest of their world (the horrible slum, or "Hell") and play with the cards in which they were dealt. It doesn't explain some parts of the song, but thats the image I get in my head when I listen to this masterpiece, so I decided to share my theory. It may not be right, but it speaks to me, and brings tears to my eye and a shiver to my spine, and that's all thats important anyway. I've seen these guys twice so far and it truly is an awesome experiance, I love these guys. Keep doing what you're doing Streetlight Manifesto. Peace out bitches.

Yeah, it isn't a love song. I got some speakers and I retract my original statemtn. I believe now that the lyrics are "Remember through smells.... T.V. stained my memories...I don't fit the shoes"...it's basically about Americans and our selfish, capitalistic love for sweet sweet fucking money. And you all wonder why the rest of the world hates us?

Pavement – Here Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow, if Pavement re-united and toured again, I would die. That would be the happiest day of my life. (As long as they came to Cleveland, if not, Roadtrip.) But hey, Built To Spill is going to tour again, and they're pretty good too. Anywho, onto "Here:" I feel this song is about, simply a dying man who is coming to terms with dying. He is looking back on his life and remembering his friends bad jokes and such. The thing about indie rock and the mainstream music scene explanation also made sense to me.

Modest Mouse – Spitting Venom Lyrics 17 years ago
Does anyone else fucking love the way the guitar changes after the intro to the song as much as myself? Damn, that riff is so cool. But yeah, to me "Every bit of venom that came out the antidote was had" means that when they fought, they patched things up. The antidote from a snake bite is made from the snakes venom, hence the name antivenom. And yeah, it's definately "Well we went downtown and we sat in the RAIN" And when he says "If the damned gave you a road map, you'd know just where to go" he is telling her to go to hell. I thought that was a creative way of putting it.

Modest Mouse – Dashboard Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is fucking amazing, and the new album is going to be really fucking good. I hope they do play it on the radio and it gets extraordinarily popular because then maybe when I turn on the radio i can hear Modest Mouse instead of My Chemical Shit Face or Fall Out Boy, both of which are lyrically depraved and musically talentless, and just lackluster in general. One more thing, all of you elitist bastards out there who obviously did not understand "Good News..." at all, and think that you are sooooo god damned cool listening to your underground music ( "ugh someone other than my exclusive clique is listening to modest mouse, they must be posers") need to come down off of your fucking cloud. The band deserves all the money they make from this because they went on for like ten years and didn't make shit, and then finally "Float On" gets played on MTV and they get the recognition they deserve. If that's what it takes for them to get what they deserve then so be it. I am still a die-hard fun no matter were the band goes. As long as they still play "Life Like Weeds" and "Here It Comes" at their live shows I am there, and whatever they play afterwards I am sure will be just as pleasing.

Modest Mouse – Ohio Lyrics 18 years ago
I live in Ohio and Cleveland definately has a shitload of stuff in it, Spikey. It's one of the twenty biggest cities in the U.S. But aside from you being wrong about Cleveland, Ohio is pretty much flat (comparitive to other states, the only part that is remotely hilly is in southern ohio, around Xenia) and it is boring and podunk and it sucks.

So the character pretty much goes back to his lonesome house in the middle of nowhere in ohio, and just sulks in his gloom and disenchantment.
He just paces around his big empty, quiet house, where the rusty hinges swing louder than anything. He just sits in his daze and his loneliness, with his doors wide open, trying to find a way to escape it all, a way to get out. He is lethargic and gloomy, "awake but napping." He is also talking about also turning off the big city lights at night, so that the people in neighboring cities can look up and see the stars at night. This is something I can really understand what he is getting at because I live in Vermilion, which is a very small town sandwiched in between Cleveland and Sandusky, and you really never can see any stars at night because of the light pollution.
The referance about not being able to look in on one-way eyes is just as it appears. He is shy and reserved, and is not open at all. That is why his relationship with the girl at the begginning of the song probably failed. He knows it was all his fault, and he wants to change, but he just simply cannot. He is beyond all help. He knows what he has to do to change, but he just can't. He is calmly crashing now, his life in falling apart, collapsing in around him, and he simply has given up, knowing that he can't change, and now he just doesn't care anymore, about anything, he is completely nihilistic in his ways, and he has now condemned himself to solitude for the rest of his days in his large, empty house, (which I think is a metaphor for his loneliness and state of mind), to play with his game machines and wish for the better.

Yeah, but what's your fuckin' point dude? If god did indeed exist (and I believe in god, just on my own terms, unlike most of the other indoctrinated fucking monguloid masses out there, who believe whatever someone fucking tells them too and can't think for themselves) then he would have the power, if he truly wanted to, to intervene. I mean, the alighty did create the entire world in a matter of six days, right? Or so were told.

Modest Mouse – This Devil's Workday Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, the song is about someone who chooses to think for himself, to choose his own destiny, to do what he feels is right or wrong, no matter what others feel or say about his actions. He is choosing free will, a la Rush. Therefore he is committing "treason" in the eyes of all the other moral majority because he doesn't think and conform exactly to what they believe or think is right. So he could "hang hisself for treason" but, "he is his own damn god." Nazi Punks Fuck Off.

That's the problem today with so many fuckin' people. They can't take a joke. Example: Last year, my friends Ian and Aaron and I were sittin' in our art class one day. Aaron started drawing random shit like he did every day, and he drew Jesus. With Scholiosis. It was hilarious, he drew an "s" and gave it legs and a head. He started making up a story about it and nearly everyone in the class came over and bitched him out about. People need to learn to take a joke.

Also, the part about the fenced off sand is his own private section of the beach, in his backyard. The two white stripes could also be in a bathing suit, or he could just be excercising in his backyard private beach.

Dead Kennedys – Moon Over Marin Lyrics 18 years ago
The part about the two white stripes, I am assuming, is that he is talking about rich yuppies who go out and jog every morning in stupid jogging suits, metaphorically comparing the suits to army outfits, thus there is an army of rich people who go out and jog about every morning. The part about the "scalding wooden tub", i'm guessing is a hot tub. The yuppie sees all the problems and crap out in the real world, and nonchalantly goes and relaxes in his hot tub because he just doesn't give a shit. Compare this yuppie to the peoplw watching "Jane Fonda on the screen tonight" in Kill The Poor.
