As much as I love this song and "Katherine, Kiss Me," I think it's a freaking cop out since they're essentially the same song. I think they should have put both together and made a long song with movements, that would have been super cool. Other than this small complaint, I really do love this song. |

It's like a book elegantly bound, But in a language that you can't read I thought, "oh wow, what a brilliant love song! beautiful lyrics!" then it just, you know, went all stalkerish from there. brilliant! |

this song is incredibly beautiful and haunting. the more i listen to the song, the more i find it amazing and creepy! I love the first verse and Ben Gibbard's almost silent "just yet." I didn't really notice it until i read the lyrics. seriously, Narrow Stairs will be bloody epic! |

I'm with ShotgunxxWedding, the song is about a girl who has dreamed up the perfect guy "when she was young." When she does meet him however, he doesn't look anything like perfection (or "Jesus" in this case, also, this is reminiscent of the "beautiful boy" line) but he still acts the way she pictured. the part: "They say the devil's water, it ain't so sweet/ You don't have to drink right now/ But you can dip your feet/ Every once in a little while" reflects back to the girl's past relationships that fell apart. The "devil's water" symbolizes some sort of lure that is in the wrong person or, to generalize it, it can symbolize a person's looks. The fact that it "ain't so sweet" means that someone that seemed perfect at the time due to some lure or his/her looks isn't as great as you thought he/she was. Flowers then suggests that you can dip into these type of people once in a while in order to filter through people to get to that perfect person you imagined when you were young. And Flowers concludes the song by repeating the chorus in an act to emphasize that the perfect person doesn't have to look like the perfection that you imagined |

I can't help to relate this song to my current situation. I see this as two friends that seem perfect for each other but they don't see it, or one sees it but the other doesn't. and so my analysis begins... "The dawn is breaking A light shining through You're barely waking And I'm tangled up in you" Person A loves person B but person B barely has feelings in that sense for person A "I'm open, your closed Where I'll follow you'll go" Shows how person A is in love with person B but not vice versa "Even the best fall down sometimes Even the wrong words seem to rhyme Out of the doubt that fills my mind I somehow find you and I collide" I REALLY relate to this. I found that "the best" relates to close friends, as if he's saying "even best friends fall in love sometimes." The "wrong words" can be everyday banter (as I'm experiencing right now). The doubt signifies how the person thinks that since they're close friends it won't work out or that something in the equation is obviously not matching up. And of course, the title lyric shows that despite the doubt, they're perfect. "I'm quiet you know You make a first impression I've found I'm scared to know I'm always on your mind" Shows how person B is more of an extrovert and makes a large impression on person A and how person A thinks/feels, etc. Person A is feeling that if he/she is always on the other's mind, that whole doubt sets in and that they won't work. "Don't stop here I lost my place I'm close behind" I see this as a mental note more for the narrator/singer than for the person he's singing it to. Don't dwell on these doubts, even though you lost your place in your friendship and your thoughts are carrying you away, you're not far from where you're supposed to be. Sort of confusing but it makes PERFECT sense to me :) And this song is SO not old to me since I just recently heard it so it's so freaking sweet for me :D |

I think this song is about a relationship that seems so perfect in the beginning but they aren't really together in spirit. They may be just really good friends.... Actually, just going with my stream of consciousness, I'm starting to connect this song to some sort of high school relationship where two people become extremely close friends and the guy is completely enamored by the girl..."Did you know what you were doing?" but once graduation comes, they must part, therefore the whole "we're so far away" Actually, that can go with any relationship. Just generalize my "high school" theory and it's fine :) |

This is a really beautiful song with AMAZING lyrics! Here's my take on the song... I think the song is about close friends. One of the friends loves the other secretly and the other needs to persue his/her dreams. "Don't know why I'm still afraid" - Questioning why he's afraid to tell her he loves her when it's obvious they are perfect together "If you weren't real I would make you up" - shows how she's perfect in his eyes "I wish that I could follow through/ I know that your love is true/ And deep/ As the sea" - wishes he can just tell her because he knows she loves him as well "Everything you want is wrong" - the girls dreams, which means leaving him, screws up the guy's plans "And right now/ All your dreams are waking up/ And right now I wish I could follow you/ To the shores/ Of freedom/ Where no one lives." - Now that she's finally persuing her dreams, he wants to follow her to make his plan/relationship work out, making it go to that blissful stage that doesn't last forever. "Remember when we first met... On your answering machine" - reminisces about old times "But right now/ Everything is turning blue/ And right now/ The sun is trying to kill the moon" - Everything is fading/disappearing, the perfect relationship he thought he could have is going away since she is leaving town "Freedom/ Run away tonight" - His message to her about leaving behind everything to start something that could be wonderful (the bliss first felt in relationships) "I think that you came too soon" - Thinks that she's the one to marry but they are far too young to decide this. He wishes that they met when they're older and ready to settle down because he thinks she's perfect for him. "You're the honey and the moon/ That lights/ Up my night" - Shows how he feels about her "We got too much time to kill/ Like pigeons on my windowsill/ We hang around" - They're too young, there's still time to grow old and grow up. Right now they're just passing time before they're ready to commit "Ever since I've been with you/ You hold me up/ All the time I've falling down" - How much she means to him |
