Bat for Lashes – Daniel Lyrics 11 years ago
"marlboro ruby skies"? absolutely not. pretty sure it's "marble moody skies", or even "marble movie skies", given the reference to karate kid and....

But in a goodbye bed
With my arms around your neck
Into our mouths our tears crept
Just kids in the eye of the storm
And as the house spun round
My dreams pulled me from the ground
Forever to search for the faith
For home again
For home again

this is definitely a wizard of oz reference, to when dorothy passed out in bed, the storm passed over her house, spun it around, and lifted it off of the ground, transporting her to a dream land where she had to search for home.

Chris Garneau – Island Song Lyrics 14 years ago
These lyrics are wrong, particularly in the chorus. This is more correct:

And oh, the rage is gone
And oh, the sorries begin
And though the drinking has thinned
Oh, still I wrestle
I wrestle within

And then to you
I don't look so good
Like I did what I felt like
Like I did what I would

But I don't have my dog
And I don't make a sound
I live on an island
In the middle of town

So if you've got a thing
With me or my friend
Remember what we've been through
Remember where we've been

We don't have our dogs
And we don't make a sound
We live on an island
In the middle of town

And oh, the rage is gone
And oh, the sorries begin
And though the drinking has thinned
Oh still I wrestle
I wrestle within

And then to you
I don't look so good
Like I did what I felt like
Like I did what I would

But I don't have my dog
And I don't make a sound
I live on an island
In the middle of town

No I don't have my dog
And I don't make a sound
I live on an island
In the middle of town

Pretty simple message. His alcoholism is no secret; it's about relapse from a supposed recovery, or even just a moment of sobriety. The rage is gone, but only on the surface. He's apologized it all away, and even "thinned" his drinking. Everything's better. But then...he starts to not so good. Like he's gone and done what he felt like. Like we all knew he would.

The part about not having his dog, I think, is a moment of feeling bad for himself, and also a bit of a red herring for anyone who wants to know what's really wrong. I miss my dog, he says. That's all. And then he withdraws back to his little island where no one can touch him. That's the significance of an island in the middle of town: it's where you withdraw to from all of the people who care about you.

Pink – Sober Lyrics 15 years ago
"How do I feel this good sober?" as a statement alone is ambiguous, and I think it's interesting to look at this song from the opposite viewpoint; ie, not as a person in an altered state asking how to feel this good when they are sober, but as a sober person asking how it is possible that they are feeling so good without the use of substances.

CocoRosie – Animals Lyrics 15 years ago
This song is intensely sad to me.
It reminds me of my childhood, when I spent a lot of time alone and depressed because everyone hated me or I thought that everyone hated me. "Nobody likes me everybody hates me guess I'll go eat worms" was something that I constantly sang to myself in this state, and the chorus directly reminds me of it.

The song in general, I think, is about wallowing in one's own misery. It seems like a detailed introspective study of a terrible mood. Maybe it's about mourning, or maybe the mourning is just the trigger for a deep depression.

Some things that stand out to me:
"Home is on the highway living on soft bread and solace"
I read somewhere that their mother moved one or both of the girls around constantly, from state to state, during her/their childhood. Thus, home is on the highway. Having lived this myself as a child, living on soft bread and solace is, well, what you do.

"I guess I'm waiting for nightfall or a solar eclipse
And to wake up half empty
Only to be filled again with mourning"
This is about just wanting to be asleep, so that you don't have to face things. You don't want to wake up in the morning. You don't want to face the day. You just want to be able to sleep forever.

"Like an empty restaurant filled with perfume and balloons
I sit and entertain the bizarro ghosts of my soul"
To make a point of saying that you feel like an empty restaurant is interesting. Clearly it's all about putting on a show and pretending to be normal and happy and all of this business, but restaurant specifically? Interesting. And the bizarro ghosts of my soul, again, is all about introspective wallowing. She's passively letting her emotions and memories and depression take her over.

& also, I see a lot of references to childhood in here.

xne, I listened to the podcast but didn't catch the part about molestation. But now that you've said it, the lines
"I would like to see a little more propriety,
Cooperate with me and answer me
Without a plea."
Sound like something a judge would say to someone.

Joanna Newsom – Monkey & Bear Lyrics 17 years ago
Monkey's promise to Ursula, "sooner or later you'll bare your teeth," means, to me, "you'll be happy. You'll smile, eventually."

One of my favourite parts:
"but walk a little faster
and don't look backwards
your feast is to the East, which lies a little past the pasture"
Beacause the East isn't a little past the pasture. You'll never be able to go all the way East--it will always be just out of reach.

The woman at the end (I'm guessing perhaps she is Rafa?) sounds like she is saying: "I never ever, I forget my story. My face is no sad, but sometimes, I am sad."

To plow takes two?
Two men?
One's on his knees...
And he loses his head but gains a delicious demon?

Totally about Brokeback Mountain-style forbidden gay sex.

Clearly, little Hollis was a tad peeved with her mother while writing this.

"I AM THE MOTHER. DON'T EVER SAY THAT (YOU LITTLE...)"

I could imagine a five-year-old version of myself writing the exact same thing after being scolded by my mother.

I don't think this is about a television show at all, but rather about a person who is so out of touch with reality that they begin to think the entire world is just one big TV show.

There are a lot of little pieces of this song that I don't understand (swayback? Vegetable rinds?), but, as a friend of mine once put it, "Melora reads history books like I eat whoopie pies." You can be assured that every single lyric in this song holds many layers of historical significance.

This song is very similar to "Brian the Vampire" by Xiu Xiu.
"Brian, tender kisses run run run is my wish for you
Brian, tender drops of blood run run run I’m thinking of you
How far does your brother go with you?"

From that quote mentioned above, I think it's reasonable to assume that the person whom Patrick was with when he was 15 was 19.

Peaches – The Inch Lyrics 18 years ago
Ok, first of all, these lyrics are wrong. "Don't eat only too much"....what the crap?! That doesn't even make sense. The line is, "don't lean on me too much," which I take to mean that she's on her back and there's a guy about to enter her and she's all, whoah fella (Don't lean on me too much), I'm not some little virgin (you don't really know me yet), if you lean in that hard you're gonna fall over.

Sia – Breathe Me Lyrics 18 years ago
The song's about anorexia. The lyrics are very typical of the thought patterns of an anorectic (being needy, lost, small, delicate, etc.). There's also the "warm me up" line, because anorexic people are always cold. The self-destructiveness is obvious. And the video for it--Sia is so thin, and wearing so much clothing--does she have a problem?

Bjork has said that this song is about "a tasteless love affair," plain and simple. She said she drew on her own memories of being five and falling in love with old men like her grandfather or a neighbor. A very innocent sort of love, you know, the kind that five year olds have.

Björk – Cocoon Lyrics 18 years ago
Bjork is not a pure little virgin. She drinks like a fish, talks like a sailor, and has sex like a maniac. She's an amazing artist, yes, but she's HUMAN and people tend to forget that.

This song is about sex. Sex can be plenty deep if you want it to be. And there's no emotional rape or other bad things going on. It's about a girl who has one of those god-like crushes, and she takes him to her bed, and afterwards he actually stays with her and they fall in love. "Who would have known that a boy like him...after sharing my core and stay going nowhere?" It's one of those "I cant believe a guy like HIM actually likes ME" moments.

Björk – 5 Years Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought the "show me your palms" part was either about:

a) masturbation, or
b) hitting her; slapping her across the face. I've heard the expression used like that before. It fits with the line immediately before it, "I dare you to take me on."

Xiu Xiu – I Luv the Valley OH! Lyrics 18 years ago
I sent this in an email to a friend of mine...It's my (lengthy) interpretation of the beehive lines.

"Okay, so I've got a theory on 'my behind is a beehive; there's a buzz in my backside.'
The song is about his father's suicide and his reaction to it: he tries to block it out, doesn't want to deal with it etc. The song isn't symathetic at all.
So, what if his father disowned him, cut him off, or kicked him out because he was gay? You've heard the expression, 'busy as a bee.' What if his father's last words to him were something hurtful about his gayness, perhaps comparing his ass to a beehinve because of all of the activity in and around it?
It's all I can think of to explain these lines.
'My behind is a beehive, there's a buzz in my backside
my behind is a beehive, and I won't rest while you break my will...'
So maybe he's saying that he's glad in a way that his father's dead because the burden of their relationship is gone and he can finally get some peace? Listening to the song I realized that what he was saying with those lines was essentially: You, dad, are selfish. Your existence, between your depressions and your threats of suicide and your judgement of me, has been nothing but stressful. When you kicked me out, that's when our relationship ended. So you've finally gone and killed yourself, but I told myself years ago that I wasn't going to worry about you anymore. You've been dead to me for years.
So that's my interpretation of those lines. It seems to fit given the fact that the song is about his father's suicide but it isn't incredibly mopey...and it isn't mean either. There are the two sides of him--the side that hated his father and the side that still loved him--and he's trying to find an equilibrium between the two so he can deal with it all.

The only other possibility is that maybe his father raped him? It doesn't make as much sense to me that way though."

The Dresden Dolls – 672 Lyrics 18 years ago
672 is the international dialing code for Christmas Island and the Cocos Islands. And it's in some Louisiana phone numbers too. Maybe it's abot offshorebank accounts?

I would guess that it's from an address though. Going by the sound of the song, it seems like it's something she's done and she's ashamed of. An old lover, perhaps?
