Joy Division – Atrocity Exhibition Lyrics 18 years ago
Um, I always felt differently about this song - though what you all said makes sense.

Joy Division always evoked WWII imagery for me, especially about concentration camps and stuff - even their name is a reference to that period in history... Anyway, this song makes me think of a gas chamber, and how people were tricked inside. Also, the disregard for human life that the Nazis had in the lines like "For entertainment they watched his body twitch", and how this echos with the experiments performed on people by the Nazis

The Strokes – Automatic Stop Lyrics 18 years ago
Probably the best song on Room on Fire, this chorus is fucking amazing, man. I don't think its about homo/bi sexuality, I think its about confusion about a person. Then the sudden realisation that you don't actually need that person, and the freedom that somes with that.

The Strokes – Reptilia Lyrics 18 years ago
"The room is on fire, she's fixing her hair" is probably the coolest image on the entire album.
I love how arrogant Julian sounds - like he can't move fast enough, and like looking sideways may slow him down.
And their best video too

The Strokes – What Ever Happened? Lyrics 18 years ago
"Oh dear is it really all true?
Did they offend us and they want it to sound new?"

Julian may not be the new Morrissey, but he can write some brilliant stuff. It sticks in your head, and you end up writing the line on a desk in math class just to share how good that line is. Well, for me anyway.
I figured out how to play the solo today, it kicks ass...

I love this video...

I agree that its about being in love with someone who is in love with someone else...

Radiohead – Talk Show Host Lyrics 18 years ago
I absolutely love this song, its one of my favourite Radiohead ones. I like the simplicity of the instrumentation, which is unusual for them, and how these simple elements build to an amazing, ahem, climax.
The gun and sandwiches line is my favourite. Its so seemingly arbitary, but it makes so much sense if you look at the context. Also, the image of a man looking to both espcape and defend himself is Thom in top form, and it feels like a kid running away from home with his possesions (gun, sandwiches) in a hankercheif on a stick. Brilliant.

Jeff Buckley – Hallelujah (Leonard Cohen cover) Lyrics 18 years ago
Jeff said that this cover was his "ode to the orgasm", and that he hoped Cohen never heard this 'bastardized' version. I think Cohen would've been proud, though - this is the greastest version I've ever heard. Its also probably the most beautiful song I've heard.
Also, this version includes verses that Leonard Cohen didn't have...

Bloc Party – This Modern Love Lyrics 18 years ago
I really like this song, but the production on it (and a lot of the album) feels cheap and gimmicky.. The split voices in the beginning are annoying, and spoil what is an awesome song, and it's the same for most of the album - too many lazers, too glossy, and its like the producer just heard of stereo, and tried to split the instruments on every track...

Bloc Party – Price of Gas Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my least favourite song on Silent Alarm because Bloc Party's usual sense of subtlty is completely lost for a broad political statement. The statement itself, however, is commendable. Americans protested a war that was caused by America's giant thirst for petrol. In effect, Bush went to war to secure cheaper fuel for those who took the immediate moral highground. I read an interview with the beastie boys, and they just attacked Bush - while driving around New York in a SUV. It's so fucking contradictory.

Radiohead – Electioneering Lyrics 18 years ago
"cattle prods and the IMF" comments on the Fund's monetary loans to third world countries. The IMF loans millions of dollars to small, underdeveloped states. This would be a nice, humanitarian gesture - if it wasn't for the ridiculous terms of the loans. That country now has no control over their economy, and the IMF ensures that the currency is weakned, that almost all trade is of very little benefit to the small 3rd world country. In essence, the poor 3rd world country is now poorer, and indebted to the IMF, who have given them no opportunities to improve their situation. The regulations concerning the loans are commonly referred to as "The Golden Straitjacket".

The cattle prods, therefore, refer to the way in which poor countries are treated by large, multinational organisations. I think the "riot shields" are referring to the uprising of the people...

The "I trust I can rely on your vote" bit seems to be in irony, for Thom doesn't trust in those leading his country.

And, Jek21, 'electioneering' is the act of canvassing for votes...

Correct me if I'm wrong, but is this Radiohead's first attempt at a political song?

Radiohead – The National Anthem Lyrics 18 years ago
I love this song, and the end sounds like a marching band walking into a brick wall. I wish they would come to South Africa, so that I too could experience the face melting effects of a live Radiohead show

Radiohead – Treefingers Lyrics 18 years ago
Its such an amazing song, and just Ed O'Brien alone with his guitar, amp and some pedals. I don't think anything from Kid A should be listened to away from the rest of the album - it works in that specific order, and should be heard as Thom et al. intended it to be.

Radiohead – Motion Picture Soundtrack (Kid A version) Lyrics 18 years ago
I read somewhere that Radiohead were trying to recapture the Motion Picture Soundtracks of the 1920 and 1930s, the warmth and depth of them. The harmonium is really wonderful, and proves what a genius Johnny Greenwood is...
During the recording of Kid A, Thom became disillusioned with life and the people around him - and this song, and the whole album, seem to echo that feeling. (I read about the disillusionment in a Blender interview - so I'm not just making stuff up)

Interpol – Roland Lyrics 18 years ago
Um, Bobster man - shut the fuck up. This is not a formal debate, we're not in high school or the U.N, so people are allowed to post their thoughts and ideas about what the song means to them and not face your incredibly witty rebuttles. You need to leave your indie rock bunker, get some fresh air, make a friend perhaps - and then get your head out your ass.

This song, no matter what its about (The Slaughterhouse reference does make sense), is a good song and their best aggressive, post-punk moment on the immaculate TOTBL...

The Strokes – Modern Girls and Old Fashion Men (with Regina Spektor) Lyrics 18 years ago
Its cool because it sounds as if Jules and Regina are completely oblivious to each other (stepping over the others lyrics, combining for a few) and its as if they were completely separate - which goes with the message of the song. It is awesome, altogether....

R.E.M. – Try Not To Breathe Lyrics 18 years ago

R.E.M. – Electrolite Lyrics 18 years ago
If you read the liner notes to In Time, Peter Buck describes it as a farewell to the millenium- and thats fairly obvious with the allusions to famous movie stars and L.A. "Im not scared..." May be a sense of optimism that he felt about the future. Also, it seems to be spliced with a love song...but i have no idea...

Death Cab for Cutie – Summer Skin Lyrics 18 years ago
Um, doesn't it just revist the same themes and images of 'Photobooth' - the end of summer, swimming children, the end of a relationship? It is, however, the best pop moment of 'Plans' - but that said, I feel as if I've heard it before... Does have a kick-ass bass riff, though (Maybe Harmer's been listening to interpol...)

Death Cab for Cutie – Tiny Vessels Lyrics 18 years ago
This is such a fantastic song, I try not to listen to it often so that it will sound as fresh and as poignant as it did when i first heard it. It's possibly my favourite Death cab song...

It reminds me of every girl I've ever liked - which may not be a good thing...

Death Cab for Cutie – Crooked Teeth Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the most catchy song off the iffy Plans, but its got a really weak chorus. Its kinda a let down cos the verses and bridges (especially the "You're so cute when you're slurring your speech" bit) are great.

Think it may be about being in a relationship that you know won't work, but you stick at it for whatever reason you can, and thus there's "Nothing there at all"
