Public Enemy – He Got Game Lyrics 9 years ago
Honesty? It takes a song with a strong message and makes it relevant and if anything really solidifies the impact of the original by proving it's relevancy in another generation.

Everyone seems to be commenting on how this song is about "a man and this woman".
At what point in this song does it indicate this song is about a woman? I'm not saying it's written that way but it's important we notice when the gender is ambiguous because I'm actually floored by how you automatically assume a relationships is a woman and a man.

I think you have the nail on the head. Obviously you have some personal examples in there, but overall I think you're on the right track. This isn't a song about being in the friend zone, it's about all the reasons someone is in there.

All about giving in.

The Killers – For Reasons Unknown Lyrics 11 years ago
I think the song is pretty obviously about falling out of love. I don't think it's any wild stpory about growing old and losing your sight, that's just stupid. Even if it's implied, it's not what the song is actaully about.
It's about falling out of love with no reason behind it, you just no longer feel the same about that person.

This song went: they wrote the music first, the both wrote different lyrics, they kept the course to ones and the verses of the others. Just so happens they both wrote about sex.
It's written on the album pan-flip thing.

The Flaming Lips – Waitin' for a Superman Lyrics 11 years ago
I don't think this song is meant to be about anything specific, but just about being at the end of your rope in general. It's a song telling people not to give up on everything when it gets too hard because things will get better even when things are getting worse and worse.

This song always makes me (personally) think about poverty and how easy it is for people to assume there's no one looking out for them and they never have a chance. I find a lot of people in these situations have an idea that something special will come save them from their situation and that hope is really all they have left to cling onto. Letting go of it is the worst thing they can do.

Barenaked Ladies – Lovers in a Dangerous Time Lyrics 12 years ago
This song is pretty adaptable and I don't think there was any one deep meaning behind it, it's just about every Romeo and Juliet out there.

I do think this song relates well to the AIDS crisis in the 80's when the song was written, so if the song is a tribute to anything that's it for sure.

Gotye – Somebody That I Used To Know Lyrics 12 years ago
I thought this song was really great because it tapped into a situation many are in but there's no real anthem to it (there is now).
The lyrics out of the course are a basic break-up, one like any other. It didn't work for whatever reason but the main thing is that they said they would still be friends. The chorus is about one party realizing that when they said they would still be friends it wasn't true, it was all lip service, and that really hurts! Breaking up with someone you really care about and tried really hard to be with is hard enough, most people don't want to get rid of that relationship completely, especially if they didn't make the call to end the relationship, it's so hard to cut such a huge part of your life out like that. A lot of people want to act mature and take it slowly, take steps down out of respect for eachother. When someone agrees to that and flee's it's one of the most rejecting feelings one can experience! It feels like they didn't care about you at all! Like it says, it's low, it's not the end of the world, but it's a hard pill to swallow.

This song is truly an anthem for getting over someone who you loved then decided to cut you out without a second thought, because that happens to so many of us.

Nicki Minaj – Roman's Revenge Lyrics 12 years ago
You clearly have a little comprehension of the power of discourse. Though you may see faggot as a simple insult there's much more behind it. It's the roots of the word and why it is made to be offensive. Everyone knows what faggot means in pop culture and it's considered an insult because of the meaning. If you do not understand that even without intentions to be insulting to the gay community, by using the word as an insult you are not matter what.
Your post shows you have little social competence and you have little comprehension over your role in the lives of others. The road to hell was paved with good intentions, it's the lasting effects that matter.
It doesn't matter if it's faggot, nigger, slut, dkye or spick. You may not mean to say what comes from it. If you really feel as though these words mean nothing you have a lot to learn.

Nicki Minaj – Roman's Revenge Lyrics 12 years ago
It doesn't matter why someone said something, no matter what the past experience is, it doesn't justify oppressing and disrespecting a population. Though you may understand that these lyrics come from a dark place and this is his way of expressing himself, you must also realized not everyone understands that. It's simply inappropriate for someone with such influence to objectify and disrespect women like he does in this song, no matter the meaning behind it. In the end it's not the meaning behind how it was delivered, it's the effect it leaves. These lyrics leave women grossly disrespected by illustrating them at objects that can be toys for violence as a way for some white trash artist to relieve frustration from "oh so sad past experiences". Your justification means nothing and makes you look pathetic.
I strongly beleive in freedom of speech so I have nothing against him saying these things. But, I do beleive it is disgusting. His influence on women in pop culture is so behind and degrading it makes me lose faith in the competence of our culture when people listen to this for fun.

Aqualung – Good Times Gonna Come Lyrics 13 years ago
I feel like this song is about being a rock bottom and the only thing that's keeping you here is knowing it can't get any worse and there's only up. One of those times when the only thing left is optimism because there's no way life can be this shit forever.

The New Pornographers – Sweet Talk, Sweet Talk Lyrics 13 years ago
I feel like this song could be about trans-gender. Lyrics about someone once being simpler and now being Byzantine (GREAT use of this word, if I might add) sounds to me like someone trying to understand someone's gender identification.
Anyone who has ever known anyone going through gender identity trouble knows there is nothing simple involved for anyone!

One part that also screams to me is the part where they say "where things that don't match meet". I feel like this could be directly about gender reassignment surgery, because as you may know, there are some things in the process that just don't match and somehow they have to work (uncertain sideway streets). And that is very confusing if you ask me.

"Yeah, things were simpler then,
You ask exactly when" would represent the person the song is about and their feelings. Though it's easy for someone to not see it externally, gender confusion is something that can cause a lot of emotional stress. Before any real transition, it was never simpler to those who are experiencing the confusion even though others may have had no issues.

The final aspect that makes me think this song may be about "gender trouble" is "mistake on the part of nature". I don't think I need to explain this one.

Leona Naess – Ballerina Lyrics 13 years ago
This song always reminds me of "One" by U2 and Mike and The Mechanics "The Living Years".

I also saw it for the first time on Weeds so that may be why the song is related to death in my eyes, but I really think it's much more than a simple break up.

I always thought the song was about the death of a loved one who you were on bad terms with (as the situation in the songs I mentioned above). A mother or a ex, maybe? But at the same time after reading the comments the song does sound much like a child she is singing to, so an abortion may be very possible (much like Joni Mitchells "River" sounding like a really sad break up song).

The New Pornographers – The Spirit of Giving Lyrics 13 years ago
I thought it was Marx and not Mark. I thought it made sense seeing the song seems to be about materialism (and I guess you could easily relate that to capitalism and then it makes sense to bring in Marx to critique).

I think it`s about capitalism and essentially it turning on the elites (possibly related to the market crash that was shortly after this song was released). I know it's looking a little far into it but it's how I take it.

In this sense I love the line "remember the wolves that you run with are wolves" because a materialistic and capitalist society is very dog eat dog, everyone works in their best interest.

Wintersleep – Orca Lyrics 14 years ago
My very first impression of this song is that it was about someone who has been bullied and wanted to grow up to be something big enough to get back at those who seemed big now. It's a common attitude from a child being bullied to have.
I have listened to it a lot and now I'm not sure if that's really what it's about. I like the idea on the human race.

This song is also one of the greatest I have heard come from the east coast. His last "monster" sends just about anyone who listens to it goose bumps. It's really something live, being the first place I actually heard it.

The message is very straight forward and it doesn't take much interpretation. I haven't cut ties with my father but I can relate and I'm sure almost anyone can. It's about a fear or losing someone without ever patching things up. It's a song about forgiveness.
It reminds me of, "one" by U2 and "the living years" by Mike and the Mechanics.

Regina Spektor – Samson Lyrics 16 years ago
I think that people are reading to literally into this song. Yes, there is a more then obvious illusion to the story of Samson and Delilah, but I don't think the song is a story about "some girl before her" or anything like that. I think the song is based around this bible story and not only on it. There are many metaphors worked in here.
I strongly beleive this song is about becoming completely vulnerable to someone whom you love and that person who you love (whom hold the songs point of view) loves you yet uses you. Just like in the story. To cut off his hair would be to lose all his strength, to be on the same level as her.
I see the "sweetest downfall" as a) the downfall is a regret of cutting using him or b) the line "Samson" says back to her.

Fugees – Killing Me Softly Lyrics 17 years ago
I think the song is very straight forward. She went to a concert of someone she had not heard much by. He sang and she related so well she became emotional, it hit home. Everyone at one point hears a song and it just really hits them, and this is what happened to Roberta Flack when she went to a Don McClain concert. When he sang a certain song (not sure on what song it was) she became very emotional and this is what she wrote about. And I think that the Fugees did a wonderful cover with much emotion and they owned the song.
