Nas – I Can Lyrics 15 years ago
"It was empires in Africa called Kush
Timbuktu, where every race came to get books
To learn from black teachers who taught Greeks and Romans"

True, there was a Kingdom called Kush, and one called Timbuktu, however, Kush was not a center of learning, Timbuktu was, and Timbuktu was settled in the 10th century AD, long after Greeks and Romans and their respective empires had dimmed.

"Gold was converted to money it all changed
Money then became empowerment for Europeans"

So, this part is confusing, if he means to say that no one had gold before visiting Timbuktu, he's simply wrong. If he means to say that exaggerated stories of the wealth of Africa and Timbuktu spurred European interests in the continent, he is right.

"The Persian military invaded
They heard about the gold, the teachings, and everything sacred
Africa was almost robbed naked"

No, actually, the Persian military invaded long before, around the time of Darius, conquered Egypt (not for very long though, as I recall), and obviously, well before Timbuktu. As for robbing Africa naked, even if you redefine Africa to mean "Egypt" he is still wrong. The Persians did not rob Egypt naked since a poor conquered country would mean more support from the Persian stocks, and a poor and starving country was more likely to rebel, the Persians normally left things be.

"Slavery was money, so they began making slave ships"

Yes, this is true, but doesn't share much relation with anything else he's said so far.

"Egypt was the place that Alexander the Great went
He was so shocked at the mountains with black faces
Shot up they nose to impose what basically
Still goes on today, you see?"

Seriously, is he actually saying the Alexander the Great somehow shot off the nose of the Sphinx? If Alexander had cannons, the world would be a much different place right now, haha.

So, there you go. Like I said, I like the message of pride and self-respect, but despise that Nas feels he has to revise history in order to give young black kids pride and self-respect. If you base these things on lies, I can't see anything good coming from it.

Say Anything – Into the Night Lyrics 15 years ago
No, I don't think he can write. Your childish insults aside, it may be that he what he is trying to say is that "time stood still" with his line "I'm a tear in the clock as you walk away". However, a tear in a clock is not good imagery. I personally have never heard the saying, and have never seen a torn clock. The metaphor is a bad one. There are plenty of ways to make it known that it seems time is standing still without resorting to shoddy, confusing metaphors where not only do clocks tear, but you somehow have become the tear.

As for your reasons for not liking comment boards, it sounds as if you simply don't like to have others disagree with you, which I think says more about your character flaws than it does mine.

I love the sample in the background on this song. One of the best they have used, and they have a lot of good ones. I only wish I knew what it was from, or if it was an original.

Saul Williams – Coded Language Lyrics 17 years ago
What does this song mean to me? Oh, I don't know if I attach any special meaning to it, I don't relate with it's message or the idea that seems to be preached here and in many other works by Saul Williams (esp. the idea of a high consciousness, etc.) but all the same, I love this mans poems.

I've been listening to the discography of this band, and after three albums, I'm at this song, and it hits me. "This guy can't write". I mean, sure, a few of the songs are exceptions, most notably so far are "Alive with the Glory of Love" and "Wow..." but really, lines like "I'm a tear in the clock as you walk away"? Does this imagery make any sense? I don't think so. It's a shame, like a lot of bands, they have a decent enough sound, but suffer from basic writing problems such as bad imagery, disjointed verses, and false rhymes.

I imagine it being two people in failing relationships (or at least relationships that they aren't happy in) finding one another and dealing with the possible feelings of guilt that might come along with the idea of cheating on their respective partners. I say go for it, you live once, might as well be happy.

RJD2 – Making Days Longer Lyrics 17 years ago
I disagree. It's definitely a love song, but I think it's a current love. He says, "I love you" and then goes on. He's at work thinking about her, then he is talking to her on the phone and doesn't feel alone anymore. He then comes home and hears her voice again.

I think a careful rereading of the lyrics will make it clear that he is speaking about a current relationship.

Muse – Sunburn Lyrics 18 years ago
Well, my take? It's religion, perhaps specifically, the Catholic church. I'll try breaking my view down by the lyrics:

Come waste your millions here, secretly she says
Another corporate show, a guilty conscience grows

::Alright, so, first stanza and we are "wasting" our millions (money, obviously). The church (again, catholic, specifically) is a very rich organization, one might even say, "A corporate show". As for the guilty conscience motif repeated throughout the song, well, that's pretty obvious, isn't it? I mean, where would the church be without parishioners that felt guilt?

And I'll feel a guilty conscience grow
And I'll feel a guilty conscience grow

She burns like the sun, and I can't look away
She'll burn our horizons, make no mistake

:: Well, burning like the sun. What the church says is the word of God on Earth and therefor, perfect. The comparison of Jesus/God to the sun is a very common association made for thousands of years. I believe that when he says "she'll burn our horizons" he is talking about the future. The use of "horizon" when talking about events in the future is fairly common as well. He is saying that a growing catholic church is going to burn the horizon (perhaps a call back to the violence of the early church? perhaps a commentary on a current war that some see as religiously motivated?)

Come let the truth be shared, no one ever dared
To break these endless lies, secretly she cries

:: He is calling for the truth about the church (or simply, christian doctrine) to be out, but also stating that no one ever dared to break the endless lies of the church. The part that got me was, "secretly she cries". Now, I guess one might see this as the song writers attempt at redeeming the church and saying that, basically, deep down, the church is still good and that the message of church is "sad" that it is shrouded by the lies of so many people who are in charge of the church and it's doctrine.

She burns like the sun, and I can't look away
She'll burn our horizons, make no mistake

And I'll hide from the world behind a broken frame
And I'll burn forever, I can't face the shame

:: This is another part that gets tricky. The frame is obviously pointing to something, but I'm at a loss as to what the frame symbolizes, it would help to know what type of frame he is referencing, any ideas? As for burning forever and not being able to face the shame, I think that these are somewhat easily grouped with previous interpretations in my post, and would most likely become more clear once the line about hiding behind the broken frame is deciphered.

couldBanyone - thanks for the advice. It turns out that I'm fairly pleased with the album overall. Brumheller and Hello Hammerheads are up there on the favorites from the album, but Bees, and Barnowl come up not far behind. I'm going to browse about for Manitoba now though, as per your suggestion. Thanks. Anymore suggestions, please, email them to me!

I just discovered this song by accident when using Limewire, and I have to say, I'm definately going to look for their CD. This song is one of the greatest mellow pieces out there, and harkens back to Simon and Garfunkel.

So you mean to tell me that if some one is critical about a song you like, their opinion isn't worth hearing? How very sad that you live in such a narrow little world without the benefit of dissenting views and opinions to help you hone your own.

Crash Test Dummies – Afternoons and Coffeespoons Lyrics 18 years ago
It has obvious links with "...Love Song..." and is simply a song about growing old. The protanganist is talking about growing old and not necessarily in a negative way, but more of a matter-of-fact kind of way, resigned acceptance, kind of way.

David Usher – Black Black Heart Lyrics 18 years ago
Wow...I don't claim to know what this song is about, but some of you guys are way out there with your "theories".

I see it as a song about sex and love, certainly. That much is obvious. I think the scene for the song is the protaganist actually having sex. It seems to me, after reading through the lyrics several times, that he is claiming that he is falling in love, giving in to this person, I assume a woman (unfurl his flag, a nation helpless). He seems to be bemoaning, however, that this woman with which he is falling in love, while terrific at sex, is really just playing a game with him, and indeed, doesn't at all reciprocate his feelings. I find proof for this in the "black, black heart" lines, as well as the references to the playing card suits, which invoke an image of games.

I see it as a love song, where, despite, or perhaps because of, this amazing, mind-blowing sex between this man and woman, the man is falling in love, and the woman, while seemingly happy to continue a sexual relationship, is not at all interested in a more emotionally involved relationship.

I'd be happy to discuss the lyrics of this, or any other song in more detail, just email me, hippiasrex@gmail.com

I'm actually not a fan of Chemical Romance at all, and this is the only song that I can stand to listen to by them, however, despite my indifference towards the lyrics (which I find rather simplistic and poorly chosen) I have to say, the video for this song is extremely well done. If you haven't seen it, you should attempt to find it, either at launch.com or some similiar site.

I find this song rather disturbing. The songs message is a fine message, and one that more songs should proclaim (pride, self-respect, etc) however, the song itself, while trying to gain some cerebral credit through the use of Fur Elise in the background, is full of historical inaccuracies and exaggerations.

Regina Spektor – Prisoners Lyrics 18 years ago
What more could be said about this song? I suppose, literally, it should be taken that a criminal, in prison obviously, is speaking about her dreams of being free, which happen to be in common with the rest of the prisoners.

The line "and [if] hans christian anderson could have had easy his way with me" is interesting as I take it to mean that her childhood was not the normal one where parents might read books to their children. HCA is an interesting choice because he wrote fables about human nature, and it seems to say that had she had parents that taught her the lessons to be a good person, she wouldn't be where she is now, in prison.

Later, she mentions how her mother thinks she is grown up but that she is, in fact, just little. It's as if, even with her tough exterior of tattoos (as tough as mermaids and swallows can be anyhow) she recognizes that she is still just a small child inside in need of love and comfort and ultimately, a parent.

I am most interest however in what she is waiting to remember. It seems to be an important part of the song. Any suggestions?

Metric – Calculation (Theme) Lyrics 18 years ago
The line, "Who put these bodies between us?" I think really sums up the grit of the song. These two people have become so mechanical in their lives and love-making that instead of some dynamic force, it's become a mathematical equation, cold and predictable. The "transcendant" feeling of love that might have once been such a strong point in their relationship has gone missing, and it leaves her asking, "Who put these bodies here between us?". I think Johnnyc was hitting close when he said that it was their "spirits" wanting to meet but being seperated by life. Perhaps it's boredom with one another, or perhaps it's something else, but I think the singer regrets that this cold seperation has become to prevalent and wishes it weren't so.
