Great song, one of my favorites by him. I’ve had the song on reply for the last few days and its still not getting old. This song is about a guy who cares deeply for a girl who is struggling with an addiction of some type; alcohol or drugs. The girl can’t control her addiction and he has tried his best to help her through the addiction. He has tried his best to show her that somebody does care and is there for her. In his opinion he has done everything imaginable to help her hence “I can’t break her”. He doesn’t even know what else he could say to get through to her. He prays for her and thinks about her all the time. His biggest fear is that nothing he can ever do will help her hence “I can’t break her fall” This song is about the guy cracking under the pressure of the girls addiction. It is hard to have no control at all in a situation, especially when it effects someone you care about. He wants to leave and forget all of the trouble and heartache she puts him through with her addiction, but he can’t. He can’t just leave her to fend for herself when everything seems so hopeless for her. He has held on to hope for so long, hope that she will persevere and in the end he can’t ignore hope and how much he cares for her, no matter how much he wishes to forget it all. The song really builds up at the end and you get the feeling he still doesn't know what to do about the situation. "she says today is gonna be the last time" She says its going to stop but he knows better, she has said it before and he knows that it won’t stop just because she says it will. No matter how sincere she is when she says it, its not that easy. Which goes back to the song because he starts out the song with two lines that are quite similar to the last two lines... It’s a cycle. There are good times with the addiction and bad times. He can handle the good times when things are under control, it provides him with hope. But the addiction always catches up with her and he can’t take the bad times. He is a confused mess. “And I know there’s never gonna be an easy way out” is him realizing that he’s never going to find an easy way out of this relationship because he can’t stop caring about her well-being. This song pretty much sums up my last year or so. It reminds me of a girl I know and actually managed to walk away from after a long struggle with her addiction. I still wonder if I’ve really walked away from her, there is still hope and I still care. |

| seems like he is saying that regardless of how much you miss someone (well i wish my car could drive to her tonight) or how bad things are in other parts of the world (the rain in new orleans forgot to end) the world will continue on for his child and other generations (which he eludes to in the last stanza with the mobile dancing) who will be far removed from your pain of missing someone or the current world troubles. and the beat goes on.... | |
