Andrew Bird – Plasticities Lyrics 17 years ago
pretty sure its about how society's mentality is evolving and there is a widening gap between the beliefs of the elder generations and the younger generations.

the elder generations are fighting to retain the tradition and comfort with which they are familiar, and dont understand how there can be wrong in this country beneath a democratic government.

the younger generation is too focused on plowing over morality and ethics and, at the expense of personal happiness (about which the elder generation believes life is too long to spend it trapped in a restrictive, emotionless environment), advancing technologically (fight for your neurons and plasticities is a reference to the stem-cell research debate). precious territories is in reference to the quickening rate at which available land is becoming obsolete because of our growing population.

I think he's referencing Christianity. Maybe religion in general.

A Perfect Circle – Magdalena Lyrics 18 years ago
guys... listen. you all seem to be on the right track here. but it's not overwhelmingly complex.

mary magdalene (magdalena) was the supposed wife of jesus. she is often heavily associated with the holy grail. to make a very long story short, if the holy grail was ever uncovered, the truth of christianity would be heavily questioned.

one of the first meanings of this song is saying "i'd give anything for a chance to kiss/taste/essentially put my mouth on and drink from the holy grail" because, if this happened, the holy grail obviously would have been found and the foundation of christianity would be shaken.

second...yes there are "whore" references through the "a dollar at a time," mirroring the exchange of money for sexual activity..but not in the sense that magdalena was a whore. more that she was impure. referring to her as a "black madonna"...madonna is a term used in reference to the virgin mary. black, though, is opposite of the pure color of white...thus making magdalena impure. which, obviously she would have him, if she truly was the wife of jesus and truly did have other children with him like the stories state.

bassssiicallly...

this song is saying "hey, listen, magdalena was impure because she was having sex with your savior jesus, thus making your savior also impure. ps...i would give anything, even my soul, to get even one taste of magdalena (in this case representative of the holy grail) in order to prove to all of you that i am right and christianity is founded off of lies."

yea. colloquially enough that is how i view it.
