Well after hearing an interview with Chino https://www.kerrang.com/the-news/deftones-chino-moreno-on-the-thrash-metal-riff-in-urantia/ the chorus feels like he is simply talking about how he and perhaps his wife, or a fictional couple, are both 'losing it' and need some time to release. Ride around the lake, maybe she was heading out somewhere too. Rearranging parts: perhaps of being laid up writing this record, or perhaps their verbal interactions and maybe what he wants to say to her. Its the way they are and he's saying 'deal with it', we're a lot alike, he doesn't want to lose her, she's perfect, almost surreal. They get freaky 18 hundred million ways lol. He's content with her, till death do us part. They will meet in the afterlife. Had to look up Urantia, had no idea what it was. That's my literal interpretation. Of course if you take the word for its meaning it has a lot packed in about science, religion, alternate thoughts. Freakin great song. |

There is a comment from Chino about how the theme of the album was going to be about the "end of the world" craze, all the doomsday wingnuts talk about happening in December. A 'Tempest' is a violent disturbance - so - if you think about it, I think what Chino is writing about is 'go ahead and take me, we've been caught in a standstill (stasis) for so long, take me apart'. Wait for the glory (it actually happening) as you stare into the sky beneath, suggesting you're either blown into outerspace or in heaven, looking down. wikipedia of the 2012 phenomenon http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2012_phenomenon has some references that kinda tie it all together...or at least you can draw conclusions from it. The 'ancient arrival' could be the Maya. 'Cut to the end' is saying 'let's see it, enough already, cut to the chase'. The beginning of Tempest reminds me of Pink Floyd's Run Like Hell |

Heck, religious or not, there are plenty of wackjobs to even the playing field. Like another user stated, just because I listen to Halo, doesn't mean I follow or believe in the lyrics. Hell, I listen to Country sometimes. On that same playlist I might have Slayer in rotation. Who gives a fuck. If you like it, turn it up. I grew up going to Baptist, Presbyterian, Protestant. I read alot of fairy tales and quite honestly, that's what the bible was to me. So call me crazy, uneducated, what have you - to each his own. Just because your buddies can explain five different denominations gives you a hard on, doesn't mean it will give us one. |

I agree with Radar20, although like many songs it is all how you interpret the lyrics. Chino said on this album he wanted to write about stuff that didn't have any specific meaning. Go to Deftones Facebook page and watch the interviews. He doesn't address this song but does use a blanket statement of his writing intent. If the line "For a thousand days, you've been staring away" is directed at Chi, that would be incorrect, although, maybe he uses 1,000 days as a general amount since the day he went into a coma. Nov 4, 2008. "So I gaze, in your eyes, and I wonder, can you take me on?" Sounds like he is talking about a girl he likes. I wouldn't personally think the Deftones would write about Chi directly, out of respect, I think that goes without saying - that Diamond Eyes is everything about Chi - I just don't see a lyrical connection - but hey, that's why I read your interpretations so I can make my own. Alot of you have great interpretations. On the other hand, there is without a doubt, that the album is dedicated to Chi. I love the album and listen daily. I just do not find any connections in the lyrics to Chi. There might be something there with "Risk" about Chi. Also read MrDillinger's and rocketjump's "Diamond Eyes" comment. I can see there might be some relation to Chi but it's very obscure - that's what I love about the Dtones and this album. |

If you knew anything about Slayer, you would know that they're not Satanists. They write about what views those in the world, might have. There are many people who have just given up on their govt, religion, etc...Slayer sings about that. It isn't they're view - it's the view of the people the learn about. The Jihadists, the suicidal, the non-believers, the people who are fed up with mainstream. Try to prove me wrong - if you do please provide me your source. I believe it was Tom Araya, who did an interview in a local paper before their concert (Divine Intervention), he basically said their lyrics are based on the views of others - as if he were in their shoes. For all I know, maybe they really are totally anti-religion and hate god. I doubt they're that F'd up - but I could be wrong. Slayer is the best - period. |

CRUSH MUSIC MAGAZINE:With this video, do you think you had to avoid any religious connotations since the song contains the lyric "Never would I have helped to nail down" which could be interpreted as part of the crucifixion? SAM: Yeah, I mean I suppose it could be interpreted as anything! But the idea behind it, for the song "The Clincher," is about being buried alive. And when he says "help to nail down" he's talking about nailing down the lid of the coffin. You can interpret it any way you want to though, whatever works is cool! Helps to do a little research, but the point he made is you can interpret a song however you wish. That is what's so great about music, Chevelle more importantly - they dont write Aerosmith songs "love in an elevator" HMMM...wonder what that song is about??? LOL REM is good like that too, so are several other bands I dig Chevelle even though they sound too much like Tool. This album really connected with me - I listen to it everyday and my wife thinks i'm nuts. They are Christians, but do not write Christian music? Well now, if you are Christian, do you not have an obligation to speak on what your beliefs are? That is what you do if you belong to any denomination (translation: religion is a neurological disorder). I dont think Chevelle is trying to push Christianity on us, however, if they're Christian - they're singing Christian. I also do not think they have a neurological disorder, just religious folks in general who want to believe one way or the other, that their religion is gospel. Get over it people, Christ is not coming anywhere to a theater near you soon. Unless you're Mel Gibson. Chevelle rox - period. |
