The Decemberists – On the Bus Mall Lyrics 17 years ago
Someone else pegged it: this song is eerily similar to the movie My Own Private Idaho. There are tons of similarities and the story in this song is exactly what that movie is about.

The Smashing Pumpkins – Tonight, Tonight Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is about a desperate last stand to keep alive our dreams of wanting to make life great and to take over the world, despite growing older and growing further and further away from them. Those ideas and ambitions are still alive if we just let ourselves believe that they are, if only for just one night.

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 17 years ago
As a follow-up to my comment on page 1, I've seen several live videos and heard live recordings of him singing the song in the two ways I pointed out. Primarily:

- "...The kind you'd find on someone I could save" / "I've had some time alone to hone my lying technique"

- "...The kind you'd find on someone that could save" / "I've had some time, O Lord, to hone my lying technique"

He always sings either one pair or the other, which again I think indicates two meanings to the song: the first making the song about his struggle with love and relationships, and the second being his struggle with belief in God. Based on either of those two lyric pairings, the rest of the song can be interpreted along the same lines.

And also, the title on the actual cd case reads "Jesus Christ" but with a capital C printed over the e. Thus the song is called both "JC" and "Jesus Christ", the first most probably an abbreviation of his name and the second just him saying, "jesus christ" in woe.

I'm beginning to think this theory isn't so farfetched.

Bright Eyes – Mirrors and Fevers Lyrics 17 years ago
Tihs song is about feeling like you're suffocating and as hard as you try, as hard as you swim to get to the surface and just breathe, there is a layer of ice keeping you. He may even have intended it as something you can see through, but cannot pass.

He is living in the three inches between the water's surface and the layer of ice. Keeping his head above water is all he can do, but that's where he's always going to be. He's going to grow older, his dreams and crazy youthful ambitions will find themselves boiled down to paying the bills, and eventually he'll start a family. And he'll be just like his father.

He is no savior, no saint, no hero; he is going to be just like his father. Just like I am. And just like everybody is, because that is the cycle of life. But the hope is in that you shouldn't be afraid of it, because it is calm. He tells you not to be frightened of turning the page and to just accept it, because those are the bounds of reality and of mortality.

Ultimately the feeling is of contentment, not pessimism.

Brand New – The Archers Bows Have Broken Lyrics 17 years ago
Also, the campaign trail verse elaborates more on this new faith he's found within himself, and that it never needed a church or followers or solicitors or any of that bullshit (a "campaign trail"). He was never sold his new faith, he found it.

Just because someone uses the word 'campaign' does not make it a political song.

Brand New – The Archers Bows Have Broken Lyrics 17 years ago
Political? This song is about Jesse, like the whole album. It isn't about Bush or God or some girl, it is about him and his coming to terms with those things. But all the songs are about him.

This song is about how he's finally found his own God, and it isn't in some bible or through the doors of some church; it's been lying under the back seat this whole time, with him and in him, and he believes in himself.

The first verse is him mocking himself about all his plights and philosophies when none of them got him anywhere, so he asks himself what they ever taught him ("what did you learn tonight, shouting so loud?"). All the things he used to sing about and be so sure about just never made him happy or fulfilled him at all.

He says that if he sweats all the debts then they'll drown him, and if he just dwells on them forever he won't ever be happy. So he stops trying to believe in God, or his country, or a relationship as his ultimate faith and just sets himself loose to believe in life and to let that be enough for him.

There's a reason this is the near-last song on the album.

Brand New – Jesus Christ Lyrics 17 years ago
I saw two ways of looking at this song. The lyrics would read about his never-ending struggle to find something in God worth believing in, but a few key words in the song can be heard differently to give the song a whole new perspective. They are actually what I thought the words were at first before I read these, and I can still hear them:

"Jesus Christ, that's a pretty face
the kind you'd find on someone I could save"

I always heard this at first, and took it to be him walking down the street and seeing some pretty girl and thinking, "Hey, I could be with that girl! She's cute and perfect looking. We would be so good together," but then he says someone should put him away for thinking that, since he knows deep down that he'll only end up hurting her.

"I know you're coming in the night like a thief
But I've had some time alone, to hold my lions at bay"

The end of this lyric is drowned out in the song, maybe intentionally to support this dual meaning theory. In the "official" typed lyrics on this page he's warding off God coming for him in his times of loneliness, despair, and need by carrying on his pessimistic/athiestic attitude. In an altered interpretation, he could be warding off love and relationships in the same way (even if in the back of his mind he knows he wants love, hence having to hold his lions at bay that would come and shatter this Lone Cowboy philosophy he carries around).

And the end of the song is more on him crucifying anyone who tries to get close, anyone who starts to make him realize that he wants love. He always backs out, breaks up with the girlfriend, gets rid of her because he's scared of her.

Both versions make such fucking beautiful songs I don't even know what to think.

Kind of Like Spitting – Shuffle, Kick, Hum A Tune Lyrics 17 years ago
Keep your crumbling eyes from the gray sky
It can only make living a chore
to come so many miles on broken legs;
please don't put yourself through any more.

Keep your arms by your side from now on.
Believe in the power of jet planes.
Leave note on the pillow for lovers sake,
cause no one is safe in these arms.
You should be screaming for help for your life.

And long walks cross black top, etched fields
On my stomach now, a shoulder.

It's not right that I fight being mean to you.
I'ts not right that I fight being mean to you.

Amen, goodnight and turn out the lights
I know where you'll be.
Sundown all over town, tuck yourself in strong.

Gray and blue striping over you,
apples and sunsets and almonds too.
Gray and blue on my walk home from you
I could come back, I could come back if you wanted me to.

Brand New – Sowing Season (Yeah) Lyrics 17 years ago
Since the lyric booklets are hand written, it's obviously the band giving us a new way of looking at a song, or maybe changing how they feel about certain things like, in this case, whether or not he wanted those friends back.

Other things, like the last verse in You Won't Know, is obviously left out of the lyric booklet because they want you to listen to the song at that point. That is the most emotional point in the song, at the end, and they left it out of the booklet because they want you to hear it as it was intended to be heard, and not read on paper. The band's website has a recent news update about how the only legitimacy to Brand New that the band claims is their music -- not their shirts, not their cds, not even handwritten lyrics.

They want you to hear the music.

I imported this song into Audacity and was able to split each stereo track so that I got one which just the vocal and ambiance and one which was the guitar. She is definitely saying "I can/could never lose it". At certain parts in the song it is either sped up or slowed down, but that is what she is saying.

Bright Eyes' "Digital Ash in a Digital Urn" was all about reincarnation and the idea that death is not the end of life. I personally think Kasher's overall theme of hopelessness and uselessness on this record are more of another way of looking at it than something he actually feels.

Both of these bands in particular have done a lot not only as bands, but as a label in sending out a message and encompassing a theme. They are almost sister albums to me.

Bright Eyes – Neely O'Hara Lyrics 18 years ago
How the hell do you guys know whether or not it's about Neely Jenkins? Consider he knew her most likely at the time when he wrote this song, it is far more plausible to say that he wrote this song about her and was COMPARING her to the book character. Hence, "like Nelly O'Hara..." as in they shared similarities.

If you can, try to find the original version which is just acoustic. He sings in a different beat. It's on the ep "traveling on the eu". There is also a version of "You Are My Sunshine" and a slightly altered "Haircut" on it.

Iron & Wine – The Trapeze Swinger Lyrics 18 years ago
This is most definitely a funeral song; he wants to be remembered for all the little things he did in his life, and all the happy moments because he wants to be a good memory to people and remind them of happiness. He says only to remember his misery as what lost him the things he wanted, so that they will not waste time being sad and will try to be happy.

Then in the second-to-last verse he says to only remember him seldomly, to not mourn him all the time and to just carry him with them as a pleasant memory of someone who enjoyed life, a memory to think of when you're in some random place, like parked out behind a carnival warming your hands and then all of a sudden he pops into their head and they can think warmly about him.

That last verse is the most personal, where he wants to be remembered for his uphill clawing, which perhaps pertains to his constant struggle to find happiness and love in life because that is a fight worth remembering and worth fighting yourself.

He says that if he should make it into heaven, then let someone back on earth draw a picture of it all: a picture of a circus with God and Lucifer, boys and girls in love, an angel forgiving a man's sins, and then all in the middle of it you have the lone, scared trapeze swingers -- he is a trapeze swinger, and he's saying that life and all of the things around him are like a circus. The trapeze swingers (people) in the mess of it all are scared, but he wants his memory to remind them not to be and to keep on fighting for happiness and love.

The Boy Least Likely To – I'm Glad I Hitched My Apple Wagon To Your Star Lyrics 18 years ago
I think this song is about how he fell in love with someone who changed him for the better. In the beginning he talks about being angsty and doing drugs, and how that wasn't really taking him anywhere or making him happy on its own.

The lyrics follow the theme of being in a band who doesn't make it big, but this could just be a metaphor for one way of life not working out so he tries this other one which does.

Bright Eyes – Road to Joy Lyrics 18 years ago
Something that hasn't been mentioned yet is that the basic guitar plucking at the beginning of this song is exactly the same as the Simon Joyner song "Burn Rubber". Conor has said repeatedly that the Joyner song is his favorite travelling song, to listen to "when you need to leave town in a hurry".

The other guitar part at the beginning is from Beethoven's "Ode to Joy"; ultimately, the intro to this song is a culmination of getting up and leaving and moving on to joy and something better. Road to Joy, it makes sense.

Bright Eyes – At the Bottom of Everything Lyrics 18 years ago
This whole song is a birthday party; Conor is being "reborn" into a new phase of his life. If you notice, all of the songs on this cd carry the theme of past chapters coming to a close and just being ready, finally, to move on with yourself. It's like you're looking life square in the eye, and you say "Bring it on, I'm wide awake it's morning and ready for anything."

This song's stanzas are all about observations of different behaviors in life, and different things we do, different kinds of people, etc. It culminates with Conor, who is wide awake, and he's happy because he realizes he is no one -- he has finally overcome his arrogance (his past albums are about the dual nature in arrogrance and self-loathing). He realizes he is no one special, nothing spectacular, and so he finally feels like he is the same as everyone else around him, can enjoy the same things, laugh the same way, and be happy just as easily.

This is something Conor has obviously, apparent through his lyrics, been searching for ever since he's been writing music. He's finally found it, and now he's wide awake and ready for anything and he kicks this album off saying so. Brilliant.

"So when you're asked to fight a war thats over nothing
It's best to join the side thats gonna win
No one's sure how all of this got started
But we're gonna make em God damn certain how its gonna end

can anyone explain?"

This part is about the war on Iraq; it is over nothing, and if you're going to fight over nothing then you might as well be on the side that is obviously going to win (United States). It's as if nobody knows how any of it even started anymore, but everybody is just dead certain that they're our enemy and that we're going to beat them.

Murder by Death – You Are the Last Dragon (You Possess the Power of the Glow) Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about someone who is killing themselves metaphorically (hence the reference to smoking). I think the third line is saying that if you keep going in this direction you'll end up in a body bag with a tag on your toe, and you'll jerk awake when your time comes because you didn't even see it coming. This goes along with this album's theme of different people who are greedy, have no integrity, are two-faced, etc.
