Empire of the Sun – Standing on the Shore Lyrics 8 years ago
I think this song is about blockage. The guy is standing on the shore waiting for a connection with something and/or someone. But he is blocked from something within, most likely fear and ego. He is afraid to open his eyes and see what is out there, afraid to open up his heart and mind and let new knowledge and love inside. So he resorts to not wanting to communicate or talk to people and face the reality. He just keeps turning inward and avoiding what is out there.

I connect with this mostly about a guy running from a relationship. Especially with the lines "The future's in my hands, I hold it in my palms, Engrave it the leylines running right down her arms" He KNOWS he has a connection with this girl, the meridian lines are connected. And he holds the future in his hands with the actions he needs to take. But he is scared of the intensity and the passion and how that changes him.

I think that it can also be about avoiding spirituality too. And hiding from the reality that there is something out there bigger than us and facing that reality is really hard and it is much easier to just hide and pretend that the world and the universe is just about the 3D life we live.

Both concepts are often connected anyway, so i think it applies to both! It's easier to just live in a distracted world create noise in our head to drown everything out.

Portugal. The Man – Modern Jesus Lyrics 10 years ago
This is about the church telling them what they need to do to behave and why he doesn't need them. He's saying, you don't need to pray for us, we are living a great life and that they are already englightened and changing the world for the best.

Lyrics breakdown:

[Come on in
Take a seat next to me
You know we got
We got what you need
We may be liars preaching to choirs
But we can
We can sell your dreams]
>>>>This is the from the viewpoint of the church and church people who are always trying to convert those who aren't "believers"

[You don't need sympathy
They got a pill for everything
Just take that dark cloud
Ring it out to wash it down, but
Don't pray for us
We don't need no modern Jesus
To roll with us
The only rule we need is never
Giving up
The only faith we have is faith in us]
>>>>This is his argument, saying that he doesn't need any institution to tell him what or what not to do. He doesn't need sympathy, a pill, or the modern Jesus, to FIX him. The point of naming him the modern Jesus is because so much of modern religions are so far away from the whole point of Jesus. Jesus is about forgiveness and love and so many churches are about hate and negativity. He is saying to reach his point of living, you need to have faith in yourself not in an institutions ideas.

[We're the ones who start little fires
Yet they burn out
But when they're on the rise
They can't help but shine]
>>>>People who believe in themselves and LIVE shine brightly, they may not change the world at once, but they do everywhere in their own way by burning little fires that catch peoples attention

[And when the wave approaches
Take our ashes to the ocean
Who cares if hell awaits?
We're having drinks at heaven's gate]
>>>>He doesn't need some ceremony to bring him to heaven, he is already so close from living a fulfilling life. He's not afraid of hell because he got past hell on earth anyway.

[We know that we're helpless
At least we always assume
But we don't need to prove nothing to you
Let's keep the cool
You don't need to feel blue
'Cause we won't sell you nothing
You can't use]
>>>>He knows he's not "saved" from the religious stand point, but he contradicts them saying they aren't trying to prove anything to live their life, so maybe he is the one that is saved? He also throws in how he won't sell you a useless religion but will sell you an album that you can USE, hell you may even find enlightenment right here in this song!

The Kooks – One Last Time Lyrics 14 years ago
my boyfriend just broke up with me, and this song sings to my soul... i can't even describe how much this fits me.

it's about missing someone and wanting the love to be there again and afraid of forgetting what it was like. he wants there to be one last time of everything to be perfect so that is last memory. of course that's never going to happen though, and i think the sadness in his voice when he sings this song makes it obvious he knows it too.

Ronnie Day – Past Through Lyrics 16 years ago
wow. so much meaning to this song. it's about someone who knows who he wants to be with forever but realizes that "time will never mend this". She broke his heart, but he will still love her forever. People often say that they never really loved someone after they break up because they are hurt, this song goes against that. Ronnie is saying that "love is always true" and that if you loved someone, even if they hurt you, you still loved them and that will always stay with you. When you love, it is a pure feeling - it is true. You can't fake love.

Chris Brown – Fallen Angel Lyrics 16 years ago
Basically he's singing about this girl who he sees hurting from what other people have done to her. But he sees her as something amazing who has such great potential who just needs a little love to reach her greatness, like an angel. He knows he can help her, and she can help him, because together they can be greater than everything. You have to listen to the end of the song carefully because the first time I heard it, I thought he was saying he was going to take back everything he had said to her. But actually he is telling her to tell the people who hurt her to take it back, and tell them that they are nothing if all they do is say hurtful things to people to bring them down.

The Goo Goo Dolls – Become Lyrics 16 years ago
I think kdiddy33 is pretty spot on with this song. I definitely think that he loves this girl and he is wanting her to come back to him, because she left him, mentally. She's worked hard to get to the top and people tear her down over and over. She used to trust only him and come to him with all her problems but she's been broken so many times she isn't even going back to him for her crutch. She's stronger now and feels like she doesn't need him and their relationship is struggling. She's beautiful in the sense that she is strong and has gotten through it all, but at the same time he misses being her comfort and protector and wants her to come back to him. It's as if all the troubles she's fought through has made her lose her spirit and love and he wants her to see the light and learn to love again. She doesn't have to be so strong and fight away all the pain and disappointment because she has him and love is all that matters.

Rascal Flatts – No Reins Lyrics 16 years ago
i just love this song. of course my love for horses makes me a little biased. ;) it's basically about a girl who finally realized that her relationship was constricting and that she needed to get out of it. once she finally "breaks free" she realizes how much she loves being herself and wild and free from constraints.

the image the song is trying to portray in the lyrics is a horse who was wild but captured. the horse breaks free from the reins that have held her back in captivity. as soon as she is loose she runs as fast as she can to get away from the binding ropes and is finally free.

Did anyone else notice the connection of the line "Where I was lost for good in outerspace" with the song the Astronaut from the album Leaving Through the Window?
