Interpol – The Scale Lyrics 16 years ago
I heard an interview with Paul Banks talking about favourite novels, one was Growth of the Soil (written around 1917) by Knut Hamsun (Norwegian). In it a mother/farmhand drowns her newborn baby as she doesn't want to be tied down to the father/farmer. She claims that she slipped into the river while giving birth, and the defense in court was a grand speech by a lawyer arguing, that even if she did kill the baby, it was societies blame for its prejudice towards children from unmarried women. At the end of the court hearing the judge reminds the jury that;

'the not uncommon reminder that in cases of doubt, the scale should be allowed to turn in favour of the accused.'

I'm pretty convinced the song in some way is tied to this, but from what angle I'm not sure.

The Smiths – Hand in Glove Lyrics 17 years ago
Lord Alfred Douglas, a friend/lover? of Oscar Wilde, said of Wilde after his death "he was hand in glove with all the little boys on the Boulevard. He never attempted to conceal it."

At Wildes trial he spoke of 'the love that dares not speak its name' when asking to advance upon this he said; "The love that dares not speak its name" in this century is such a great affection of an elder for a younger man as there was between David and Jonathan, such as Plato made the very basis of his philosophy, and such as you find in the sonnets of Michelangelo and Shakespeare. It is that deep spiritual affection that is as pure as it is perfect. There is nothing unnatural about it. It is intellectual, and it repeatedly exists between an older and a younger man, when the older man has intellect, and the younger man has all the joy, hope and glamour of life before him.'

Morrissey is a huge fan of Wildes work, and it is very possible that he was writing this song through the eyes of Wilde.

The Shins – Sleeping Lessons Lyrics 17 years ago
i think it's meaning is along the same lines as caring is creepy, his outlook & criticism on the social status for young western adults.

'go without until the need seeps in... collect your novel petals for the stem' could refer to caving to popular kids or whatever and just building yourself by behaving in the right way to fit in and becoming a part of the 'stem.' and then once becoming a part of that everythings great for a while (glow) but then it starts falling apart (melt and flow) and you fall apart (eviscerate your fragile frame) and you havent got a clue who you really are (a thousand different versions of yourself).
'jump from a book' maybe implies being more intelligent & not just being confined to the 'Gods' (maybe speaking sarcastically/metaphorically of celebrities, who he feels are wrongly idolised) that are looked up to but offend him. he's saying to see things how he does (just put yourself in my good shoes) as he behaves how he does (see that i do what i do, because the old god still offend) as he hates that way of living. i dont know a thing of what james mercer was like at school or college or anything but maybe its looking back to how he feels he didnt fit in but has come out successful (and writing/making awesome music)

aside from all that & my possibly completely wrong interpretation, this song is amazing.

Jens Lekman – Pocketful of Money Lyrics 18 years ago
i think this song is either about

a) going through the phases of being in a relationship with this girl.
meeting her - going on a date - going crazy about her.

or

b) there is another girl he wants to be with. and the first 2 stanzas are saying he is willing to spend a whole months wage on some girl he hardly knows, as if to say 'this is what i'd do for her think about what i'd do for you.' and then the 3rd and 4th stanzas are asking the girl he really likes to take him some place perfect where they can be happy together and describing just how much she means to him. and then there's the amazing sample...

either way it's a fantastic song, from a fantastic album, from a fantastic artist.

Interpol – The New Lyrics 18 years ago
Paul Banks: Most of the time we have the titles before the song is done, but in this case we didn't. Like "The New" is called "The New" because that was the working title. Right now there's one that's called "That New One" because it's new. We have another one we're working on called "That Good One."
