I think this song could have two meanings: 1. He's talking about his first loveand having to leave: "That you would just plead again, For the first time I knew what to do" 2. and/or his girlfriend is pregnant and his job takes him away (possibly touring with BNL) I know, I know shitty explanations, someone please offer a better one!! |

In the first verse he is talking about lust/love, the fact he does not know what he has, but it is a common afflictionj (hence, "common cold reference")." Pay up front and make a wish" has dual meaning, it is both the time he's invested in the girl and how much money he has spent trying to impress, when it was wishful thinking. The reference to animals confuses me a bit, but I think he is proving the extremity of his love for her. "I can’t stand to wait in line long So I built a new machine It just measures up the distance And then eliminates the folks between" I think this is ironic because he knows he has to stay in line, so he's just so pissed off about being there he imagines if he could make himself next in line, instead of way down the line of her lovers. "One day I’ll construct a sattelite And I’ll name it after you Cause’ you were the greatest friend of all Except for when you split my lip in two To see the look upon your face As I launch you into space" Same really as other verses, I think he shows how truly madly deeply he's in love with her, but sometimes he wishes he wasn't and that he could launch the problem into space. I think he thinks she knows about him liking her, so he wishes she could stop the pain of a split lip and that they could just be friends "Bye bye self respect I haven’t had much of it since you left I missed out on the best of you" Self explanitory really, he has lost so much self respect in the chase for her love, that he wishes he could have the love they had back. I think he only really had the"puppy love" of her, because he says he missed out on the best ( a more mature caring version of her). "Someday I will find the secret To your social chemistry Then I’ll print it on a t-shirt And it’ll make you want to be with me And if I wear it past your work You’ll see other guys are jerks" Instead of trying to win her love the traditional way, he trys the most complicated way possible, doomed for failure, all to make her want to be with him. He is trying to prove his worth over other other candidates, which she just can't see, because nice guys finish last. "Much like pheromones for flies You will not avoid my eyes" He fantasizes about having the secret formula to winning her heart, he is especially attracted to her eyes. "There’s a lot I will never do Some fantastic I know its true Not as much as my want to be with you" He says he has missed out on so much missing her, but he can never be sure if he would have chased others if he had got the chance. Again this is a bit fantasy, a sort of 'what if' lament "Bye bye bye (REPEAT)" He is trying to say goodbye to his love for her, but he is probably saying goodbye to his life, a life resigned to chasing her. |

| I as the above reader posted, am waiting for my soul-mate. I haved loved her since I was 12. I went out with her but she broke it off with me, I think we were both immature (when were 12). | As a young person who has witnessed the Ballymun towers in the distance, this song is a great insight to social problems, reminds me of the Irish jounalist, Veronica Guerin and the movie loosely based on her life. (She tryed to take on Drug Pushers, publishing names, but got herself a death sentence for her work. Her death caused an outrage and revolt against Drug culture which unfortunately is still very prevalent in Ireland today.) Why didn't Bono play this at Croke Park? You used to able to see Ballymun Towers from Croke Park. | |
