Uh, do yours... Regardless of the status of later Mackaye projects minor threat is pretty controversially not emo.The emo label started being applied to bands which moved away from the sound of hardcore which Minor Threat was pretty much the purest example of.
As for Fugazi itself, It really isn't Emo, sure it goes beyond the conventions of hardcore but it doesn't really fit the emo-core template either, it is more post-hardcore.
And Mackaye himself even rejects the label for even bands like Embrace and Rites of Spring, of course it is possible he is wrong about that (depends what your opinion on things like authors authority is amongst other things).
But yeah, if you're going to tell someone to "do their research" in such a smug way at least get it right. |

I think "No, I never wanted to change the world, but I'm looking for a new New Jersey" might be a reference to Billy Bragg's song New England where he sings
"I don't want to change the world I'm not looking for a New england I'm just looking for another girl"
The statement is he is not looking to change the world or looking to change the place where he lives either but looking for another girl.
Since in this song he is not looking to change the world but is looking to change the place he lives perhaps he therefore is not looking for another girl.
Or to be less literal wanting to not focus on his personal problems but something big (new jersey and perhaps the state of the union itself) but not lose touch with the place he lives (hence not change the world).
Probably reading too much into that but there you go. |

I felt that way for ages with this one but it really has grown on me. I don't agree with the people here saying it's his best he has better songs (I think probably Thousand Ways is his best) but the "oh lets break some hearts" is amazing. |

For those that don't know this was a completly adlibbed song from one of the mountaingoats live shows in Sanfransisco, also as soon as he's done singing John hears a guy say "I tottaly requested that song" and says "i guarentee you, in the future people will go, play the one about the mountain goats shirt!" and sure enough he gets requests all the time for it especialy in sanfransisco which he always refuses. Except one time he adlibbed a tiny new version. |

This is a mountain goats song i found amongst some rarities, it's live but i don't know where or when from.
The Chorus is the same as the folk song of the same name the rest of the lyrics are different, i can only assume written by john. Some parts were hard to make out and i have left these blank.
Anyway i thought it was a tremendously powerful song even in the poor quality version i have. One of Johns finest vocal Performences

I think you guys are taking the technological references to literally. It seems to me that he's just concerned that this other person has a worldview where they can explain everything, and it frightens him, she shows him into her worldview (doesnt have to be a she) and though he begins to warm to it he still doesn't quite get it. |

Whilst i have been a huge sonic youth fan for ages, I've never generally been a fan of their lyrics, its not that they're bad, i just find they tend to take a back seat to the rest of their song craft. On this song however together with a few others (wish fulfillment comes to mind) the lyrics are simply outstanding. |

Oh and i think the dad is a direct comparison. As in saying his wifes love might have been conditional but his dads was not this is shown by the fact that his dad does what his brother tried to do for his wife "reached out to her". This backs up the point of not falling into the trap of thinking "because a bad thing has happened all things previously were bad also" |

Sterni i think you hit the nail on the head, (actualy there is one metaphor (obscured by mist) but its a really obvious one). The song is as direct as they come, really the meaning is said and repeated several times in it, that the bad things in life shouldn't be allowed to colour the good things. This song is Will Sheff at his most direct, its incredibly unusual for him to be quite so direct mainly because he has such a way with metaphors and similes normally. |

I think this song is to me him simply telling somone he doesnt mind the bad things they have done and he hopes that their assumptions about his judgement of their actions havn't caused them too much harm already.
I think possibly this person is the Julie in the first verse and the other two are just metaphors, examples of people doing something wrong, (a sovereign failing his country or something (incidentally does anyone know if there was a king George anywhere with a lazy eye?) and someone leaving their mother to die in the woods and therefore letting down their family. but like i said i think the main event is the first verse and the next two are comparisons. thats just my take on it. |

This song at first seems like a simple love song.
But i (and i'm not sure i can give my reasons for it just the impression i get) feel its about a couple who decides to go away for one last incredible weekend together knowing that if they do it will hi-light all the things wrong with their relationship normaly and they will end up splitting after it. But they do it anyway in an Achilles like way of choosing a small amount of glory over a large amount of nothing.
Actualy i can give some reasons. "We can taste fresh blood in our mouths again" they can taste the violent passion they used to have "there is no chance of getting enough of it" they know it won't last past this weekend. "we tally up all our possesions, were going under" fairly self explanetory they prepare for the end.
And finaly "some of our promises were binding up here where our dreams take form" they still have love for each other and this weekend allows this love to take its final form before they split.
I didnt intend to write that much and i feel i realy could write more but it would just be rambling
but this song is realy incredible. |

I completly disagree that this song is about suicide, its about resignment to the simple life. i agree with whoever it is that said its about forgoing the highs in order to escape the lows (beutifuly phrased by the way). But theres something else i cant believe nobodys mentioned. the final No alarms and no surprises bit, 3 times somone says get me out of here if u listen real close. this changes the whole meaning of the song, i think its a little part of him which is saying, FUCK i dont want this at all get me out of here. it changes the mood from resigned to quietly defiant. The little voice is hard to hear but once u hear it once ul hear it all the time. |
