Drive-By Truckers – Girls Who Smoke Lyrics 14 years ago
Literally a perfect rock song. I go to a lot of festivals and this is the closest I've ever heard a song come to capturing summer in the scene. After all summers are meant for freedom, music and trouble and you know what they say about girls who smoke...

Drive-By Truckers – Uncle Frank Lyrics 14 years ago
Another amazing DBT song. I can't believe this band isn't the biggest in the world with songs like this. It's pretty self explanatory; TVA and broken promises and the effects it had on Uncle tom

Bob Dylan – Let Me Die in My Footsteps Lyrics 14 years ago
I don't know if I'm smart but I think I can see
When someone is pullin' the wool over me

One of the greatest lines in music history

Drive-By Truckers – The Day John Henry Died Lyrics 14 years ago
The first few verses are well written and straight forward, John Henry, hero of the working class died with the industrial revolution. The worker can do all that a machine can do but not as cheaply. The last line is about the band leaving the south and their working class background for a life of rock and roll. The last two lines make this pretty clear, the working class job is gone for them, on to rock and roll life.

Drive-By Truckers – 3 Dimes Down Lyrics 14 years ago
This song is about a guy who needs to buy a condom so he can bang the two girls in the back seat. the "doublemint twins" are the girls in the back seat, not gum! They're drunk, hence the puke for bar wings, and all this Tom guy needs is 25 more cents to get the condom and bang these two and make the Sunday night news. Should have just raw dawged it.

Drive-By Truckers – 18 Wheels of Love Lyrics 14 years ago
I'm surprised no one has commented on this song yet. It's a fantastic song about the lead singer's mother's second marriage and a new lease on life. Just listen to the long intro of the song in their live Austin. It explains all.

For me it'll always mean the first night you spend with the love of your life

Prince – Purple Rain Lyrics 15 years ago
I've always felt this song is clearly a ballad about getting involved with someone without any strings attached but the other person got attached. The signer is forced to walk away thus ending their friendship. I don't particularly like prince's music but this song is rather a stroke of genius. I strongly recommend fans of this song to check out Phish's cover. It really takes the song to a different level.

Blues Traveler – Hook Lyrics 17 years ago
i love this song. Its a total call out to the superficiality of what has become popular music since the 80s and in particular the 90s of which this song was written in. Your average music listener today isn't looking for a deep meaning song, just a little taste of a dime a dozen catchy hook that only holds your attention for about 30 seconds before you change the station on the radio. Music in mainstream youth culture has diverged from a means of communication to a ploy to gain money thanks much in part to MTV that began the whole emphasis on image and catchyness that has left us with drab and flaky music like backstreet boys and britney spears. I respect blues travelers for writing this song and blazing a unique trail in pop music history. I think their mainstream success, however, is a silver lining that great music can still permeate the crap that is popular these days if only once in a while.

Lynyrd Skynyrd – Tuesday's Gone Lyrics 18 years ago
This is by far the greatest southern rock song mostly due to the greatest intro and rift ever. Now i know alot of people are gonna get mad at me for this but i think metallica just doesn't do it justice. it was a good attempt but metal bands just shouldn't cover southern rock songs. This goes for their cover of Turn the page too. a song like this requires a guy with a southern drawl to do it justice.

The Clash – Spanish Bombs Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about the spanish civil war. the part about leaving the vendana open. fredrico lorca is dead and gone is a reference to a poem of his about a child who is entranced by the moon and killed. Joe is saying you can leave it open because with him dead you dont have to worry about the moon. atleast i think so.

The Clash – Lost in the Supermarket Lyrics 18 years ago
This is certainly a song about feeling out of place. Joe uses a supermarket as the setting because it is a symbol of consummerism and modern society. the main character is trying to feel he belongs

I'm all tuned in, I see all the programmes
I save coupons from packets of tea
I've got my giant hit discoteque album
I empty a bottle and I feel a bit free

these are metaphors for things the character does to try to fit in. all said and done another great clash song

NOFX – The Decline Lyrics 18 years ago
This is one of the greatest punk songs ever written mostly because it does what all good punk songs do, sing about the ills of society. i love it when nofx rips into christianity and the bible:

The story book's been read
And every line believed
Curriculum's been set
Logic is a threat
Reason searched and seized

direct stab at religion. the song does on to tackle the hypocritical justice system with jerry's story about gettin 20 years for weed because he's in a high crime city and kills himself after being raped by inmates. the rest of the song deals with conformity. Nofx argues that we all know how much shit society is in but we turn a blind eye becuase thats easier than having to clean it up. the only part im not sure about is serotonin, not sure what that is, i believe its a medicine but not sure. the title refers to and the downward spiral humanity is currently in; hence "the decline". while nofx is always a liberal and opinionated band they really hit the nail on the head with in my opinion surprisingly accurately

The Mighty Mighty Bosstones – Toxic Toast Lyrics 18 years ago
This is the best mmb song, which is saying alot. But no one has seemed to get the meaning down. its about alcoholism. 130 proof is a hard liquor. Toxic Toast is just a name for alcohol that "jake coined". the author is still battling with his addition: "still haunts me like it wants me". the song covers a time in his life where his addiction was at its peak and him and some friends would party and drink in an apartment in what is probably boston. he admits "we made it through not all of us but most" suggesting that he lost some friends during this reckless period of his life. many other mmb songs deal with alcoholism so its not surprising this one does too

Guster – Two Points For Honesty Lyrics 18 years ago
First of all i think this is the best guster song. it deals with the problems people face with actually doing what the plan on doing. loosing their self-consciousness. in the song the author was at one point "insecure" until he was finally able to see that no one is gonna feel sorry for him and if he wants to change it he has to do it himself. it took someone to be honest with him for him to see what he needed to do to change this pessemistic view he has on how he appears to other people

Dispatch – The General Lyrics 18 years ago
Personally i love this song for its Anti-war message. i do agree that it is about jesus and it deals with the christian ideal of passifism and tolerance. despite the obvious reference at the end of hte song; "go now you are forgiven" when the band preforms the song live they give the crowd the christian hand symbol for god blessing you. Unfortuneatley when i saw them live it was there last preformance at the hatch shell and they messed up the lyrics.
