The Go Find – Summer Guest Lyrics 16 years ago
To me it sounds like a guy who's just wanting casual sex, kind of like a fuck buddy (all that I want is to make you come) and has no plans on getting 'serious' anytime soon (this is where I want to be 55 years from now). However, the girl he is sleeping is wants something more, she wants commitment, she wants a real relationship. He doesn't know how to tell her that's not what he wants, he doesn't want to have to deal with her moodiness and abrasiveness, he just wants her sex. He knows their situation isn't perfect, it's not a "real" relationship with romance etc. Part of him thinks of rectifying this to do good by her (I should try to make things better) but then he remembers that he doesn't want something serious, and there's nothing wrong with that because he's not alone in just wanting something casual (I'm not the only one).

I don't think it's anything about her physical weight. He says "NOTHING too heavy" not "NO ONE". He's referring to the obvious emotional baggage she was carrying.

Beautiful song. So romantic and innocent and sweet and uplifting. It brings on feelings of nostalgia for me. Nostalgia for people and moments that are completely unconnected to this song, but it somehow stirs up those memories anyway...

Never before have I heard such a beautiful, magical song. The violins, the twinkles, his VOICE... it's perfect. Easily my favorite song by him, quite possibly my favorite song of all time.

shannonmoorepop, you're wrong. Patrick is bisexual, and most of the songs from "The Magic Position" album were written about his now ex-girlfriend, Ingrid Z.

I always thought this song was being "sung" to a guy who has knocked up a girl, maybe his fiance or just his girlfriend. Society and family expect him to propose/marry her as soon as possible so the child won’t be born out of wedlock, but deep down he's toying up whether he should even stay with her.

He can "run on, run along, alone" and abandon the girl, carrying on with his life despite ruining hers and the child’s, or he can go "home between the knees of her" and stick by her, helping her raise the child, giving it his name, etc.

I always took this song to be about an abusive husband. Then again. I haven't heard any podcasts so I haven't heard Patrick talk about it. What does he say this song is about?

Patrick Wolf – Tristan Lyrics 16 years ago
This song is so sexy and powerful! Especially when he performs it live, you can't help but feel a strong sexual energy come off him. I definitely concur with those who want to have sex when they hear this song -- it definitely hits that spot.

It's raw, passionate and just GUH. So hot.

"Can't you see the grass is greener where it rains?"

What a beautiful lyric. This song is one of my all-time favorites, but this line just gets to me because it's so true, and so beautifully sung too.

Skunk Anansie – Secretly Lyrics 16 years ago
I love this song. I take it to be about two friends. The guy has a girlfriend, they've been going out for a while. The girl, his best friend, has had a crush on him for a long time, but was too afraid to act on her emotions because he was "spoken for".

But now, while still in a relationship, he's approached his best friend and basically told her "I'm bored of my current relationship, and lately I've been feeling kind of attracted to you." Despite her own feelings for him, she feels conflicted and "confused". She's trying to be "pure" because she knows she can't allow her friend to cheat on his partner, as well as the fact she wants to be with him for REAL, not just a "secret" fuck buddy. But all the while, sexual frustration is building up inside her - "about boys and girls and your friggin' dreams".

The first chorus reflects his intentions when approaching her. He's bored, he wants to be with "someone else" other than his girlfriend.

The second chorus reflects the "moment" before things happen between them. He's "hot and confused", the attraction is strong between him and the singer...

And all the while the lead singer is saying, he should probably just walk away from this temptation and "be by [him]self". Even though she's in love with him, she knows sleeping with him is the wrong thing to do. Eventually though, they both give in to temptation, leading to the third chorus -- they've been caught, their relationship has been exposed.

That's just the way I see it anyway :)

Freaking amazing song. I first heard it in "Mean Creek", it really fit the scene it was played in.

Imogen Heap – Hide and Seek Lyrics 17 years ago
I think this song is about being raped by someone you know and considered a friend, maybe even a loved one. The rapist is not a stranger to her, maybe it happened in her bedroom (pleasure moments hung before) or a place that previously had beloved memories associated with it. The "dust begins to fall" as she realizes exactly what happened to her, what he did to her.

The "what'd ya say?" verse appears to be the rapist attempting to justify what he did, while the very last verse sees him trying to make UP for it.

Snow Patrol – Run Lyrics 17 years ago
This song is totally about knowing someone you love is moments away from dying. I don't think it has anything to do with break-ups, I believe the meaning is much bigger and deeper than that.

VAST – Don't Take Your Love Away Lyrics 17 years ago
This song remind me of those gothic romance novels. In a way it's quite dark, both lyically and musically, but at the same time it's so amazing and romantic. It's about love; loving someone more than anything else in the world and being prepared to do anything in order for it to be returned. He's saying, "I'd rather go to hell and back than have you stop loving me. Because nothing means more to me than you and your love, and I'd rather die a million deaths than live without it."

Halloween, Alaska – All The Arms Around You Now Lyrics 17 years ago
I've always struggled with the meaning behind it, too. I'm sure it's there, but the lyrics are just too vague and ambiguous for myself to really find a true meaning out of it.

In a way, I agree with suchprettywords. I've always interpretted the song as, to put it simply, cynicism. It seemed to be that he is talking about how humans are always doing something wrong: creating problems and ignoring them, or going around in circles in an attempt to address the issues without resolving them (swim around in figue eights). I personally believe they're talking about the environmental problems we are creating, and how we're basically destroying our earth. The hints can be found throughout the song, I don't think I need to point them out to you.

But yes, that's just my interpretation. Like I said above, the lyrics are far too vague for there to be an obvious, set meaning.

Eve 6 – Here's To The Night Lyrics 17 years ago
Logically, I know this song is about a one-night-stand. But everytime I hear it, I interpret it as a song about an end of an era - be it high school, university, etc. I think of it as holding onto your youth as you're forced to move on towards the next stage of your life, and I think for a song about something as crass as a one-night-stand "Here's To The Night" beautifully captures the fear, excitement and apprehension that comes with knowing you're about to commence a new chapter of your life.

I don't think this song is necessarily about Elliott Smith, but I do now believe it's about a friend's suicide. An anonymous friend, who we do not know the identity of. Not necessarily Elliott Smith. (More than one person in the world have killed themselves, you know...)

Guster – I Hope Tomorrow Is Like Today Lyrics 17 years ago
bluekash02, I think you're stretching it a bit. No offence, but "today" never means "the past". The word is a pretty straight-forward one, and can only mean one thing - the present. If Guster was, talking about the past, all they would have to use is a very common, recognizable word: yesterday. They would feel no need to call the past "today". Because yesterday = past, today = present, and tomorrow = future.

Strays Don't Sleep – For Blue Skies Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe this song is about suicide. They are singing about a loved one who has killed themselves. The pills refer to, of course, the friend's means ofk illing themselves, and the line "What you couldn't do I will" showcases the desire the singer had to help his friend/family member. The singer can't understand why they would want to end their life, since any problem they might have encountered would have been assisted by the singer with no hesitation. From the singer's POV, he was supposed to be there for his friend during those hard times when they might have felt like they couldn't do it alone. But instead of his friend taking him up on his advice and seeking his help, he chose to give up. Alone. "Could I have saved you? Would that have betrayed you?" perfectly sums up the feelings one goes through when someone they know commits suicide.

The most powerful words in the song, "I forgive you.... for blue skies" obviously refers to the closure the singer receives once he does forgive his friend for committing suicide. For when a loved one dies, there is almost always feelings of anger and resentment you hold towards them for leaving you. And when you know that loved one makes a conscious decision to leave you, that sadness, anger and betrayal is ten times worse. (As someone who has lost a loved one due to suicide, I know this all too well.) Blue skies being, of course, a visual representation of heaven, perfection, the afterlife, etc. So while the title "For Blue Skies" illustrates the theme of death and passing that's carried through the song, it also touches on a theme of hope and content, as the blue skies can also represent infinite, eternity and ever-lasting love.

Utterly brilliant song.

This song is great. I first heard it when it was played in "One Tree Hill" and while that show's pretty bad, I've got to commend the music it uses. I've been introduced to some amazing songs and bands thanks to that show, and Jackson Water's "Center Of Attention" is most certainly one of them.

Nada Surf – Popular Lyrics 17 years ago
I'm 20 now, but I was a blonde cheerleader in high school. I was self-entitled and tended to consider myself the "Queen Bee". I was under the (wrong) impression that all the girls strived to be like me, or to be liked BY me because I was HOT. I thought all the guys strived to get in my pants because I was HOT, unless they were gay, in which they wanted to get my advice on fashion and hair because, again, I was HOT. I was, to put it simply, full of it.

The reality was (and I didn't realise this until halfway through my junior year) most people couldn't stand me. I had become so self-entitled even my closest friends couldn't bear me anymore. Girls didn't really want to be like me, they thought I was egotistical and shallow. Guys didn't really want to do me, they thought I was too high-maintenance and "loose". And the gay guys didn't admire me at all, they thought I was a fashion sheep who merely followed the crowd but pretended to lead. And you know what? They were ALL. RIGHT.

That's why I love this song. This song isn't just a mere "fuck you" to all those who considered themselves 'popular' in high school. Its a social commentary on the fact that we'll always consider ourselves better than someone else. We'll never see ourselves in the light that others see us, because we're too busy criticizing what others do and how THAT makes them worse than we are. "I'm the teachers' pet." "I own a car." "I'm a football star." "I've got cheerleader chicks." We look at qualities within ourselves and congratulate ourselves for having them, under the wrong assumption that everyone else will admire them and like us because of them. When, in actual fact, it has the opposite effect on our peers.

In reality, popularity doesn't even exist. The idea of it is a cosmic joke that's been played on all of us. Humans are too self-congratulatory to give others the satisfaction of being better than or superior to them.

Feeder – Yesterday Went Too Soon Lyrics 17 years ago
I just came back from the most amazing trip to Europe. It was the most amazing, surreal experience of my life: the places I visited, the people I got to know. I knew that when I had to go back to Australia, I would hardly see these people again, and would have to face school and exams. I really, really didn't want the trip to end; I just wanted to stay in Europe with my new friends forever. On the plane ride back home, this song played and I seriously felt like crying. It spoke to me so much. Every lyric mirrored exactly what I was feeling: dwelling on the past, thinking about the great moments and the bad moments, wanting to change things, relive things, but having to go back home and to "reality". I just wanted to push reality away and continue living my "dream". And if I couldn't do that, I just wanted to dwell in those memories, and not think about my "tomorrow" back at home, with school and work and family problems and friend issues. This song spoke to me in a way no other song has.

Best. Song. Ever.

Elliott Smith – Cupid's Trick Lyrics 17 years ago
I think some people need to get a grip. This song is not some sacred poem that can't be touched or talked about, so why the hell should it be taken down? It's a song he's released, and as members of this site we are allowed to talk about the lryics.

Elliott Smith not knowing for himself what this song is about is inconsequential, because this site is for discussing OUR own interpretations. There's no reason why it shouldn't be on this site, and there's no reason why we can't discuss it.

Imogen Heap – Can't Take It In Lyrics 18 years ago
Considering this song was made for the Narnia film (using this song was the perfect way to end the movie, I think) I think the meaning of this song can be interpreted in a pretty straight-forward manner. It's about visiting a new place you've never been to before (ie Narnia) yet being blown away instantly by it. It's a spot where she can feel both comfortable and in awe. It has exceeded all expectation and then some.

Mae – Giving It Away Lyrics 18 years ago
I always took this song as a song about the Lord. Maybe that's because I am Christian too, though. *shrugs*

I was not aware that Mae were a Christian band, but this song did seem very spiritual to me, though I wrote that down to me interpretation of the lyrics, not how they were meant to be taken when written. I love the double meanings, how it can be about God but also about a girl. Clever.

One of the most beautiful songs I've ever heard. I am in love with this song - the lyrics, the music, the vocals...it's perfect.

It definitely sounds like his girlfriend has broken up with him, and he's putting on a brave front when really he's dying inside. It sounds like he's questioning all he could have done, all he could have said, what they really had, is it worth the tears, etc. Though it could very well have been about a friend's suicide too.

Sugarcult – Counting Stars Lyrics 18 years ago
This is my favorite Sugarcult song, hands down. It sounds like he is reflecting on his life, thinking "could've, would've, should've." He wants to turn back time and take back things, say/do things, change his past in hopes that perhaps his present life could turn out differently to what it played out as.

Sugarcult – Back to California Lyrics 18 years ago
I think the song is much more complex than the girl just leaving to college. Sure, that may be part of it. But obviously this was a relationship that meant a lot to him that was not working. Maybe school was one of the reasons, but I think we're supposed to be recognizing that he's letting go off a girl who he still cares for because the relationship is obviously not working despite their efforts, not that his girlfriend is going back to school.

Death Cab for Cutie – Champagne from a Paper Cup Lyrics 18 years ago
This song describes my night last night. I take it as someone who has had a huge fight, perhaps with his friend or girlfriend.

"I'll keep my mouth kept shut from under lock and key that's rusted firm, no lie
'Cause all these conversations wind on and on..."

It seems he started drinking to ease, or perhaps forget temporarily, the anger he feels. But the alcohol is actually making it wose, with the line "I think I'm drunk enough to drive you home now."

I don't know, after last night I can really relate to it. I'm now seeing it in a whole new light.

Guster – Demons Lyrics 18 years ago
Ah, my all-time favorite Guster song. For me, 'Demons' is about someone protecting themselves from being hurt. He's hiding from his lover, or whoever he is directing the song to. He's been hurt in the past, so he puts up a front of half-truths because its easier to be unattatched than wear your heart on your sleeve and pay the price when it doesn't work out.

"My words confuse you
My eyes don’t move a blink
'Cause it's easier sometimes not to be sincere."

Another way I interpret 'Demons' is that it is a breakup song. He really does like this girl, so much so that he is afraid it won't work and he'll be hurt again like he has been in the past. So instead of taking that chance, he tells her he doesn't love her in order to end it there and save him from almost-certain future heartbreak. "Will you know you've been deceived?" Will she see through his lies and know that he really does care for her, and that's why he's ending it, or will she fall for it and think he doesn't love her anymore?

Guster – I Hope Tomorrow Is Like Today Lyrics 18 years ago
I never thought of this song as out of place. It was a fitting ending to a beautiful album and followed on nicely from 'Long Way Down'.

I think the lyrics are pretty self-explanatory. It's about having one of those rare, beautiful days where it seems everything is going your way. How you hope tomorrow is like today.

I love Ben Kweller, and I obviously love Guster, so I looove this song. And I agree, the 'na na na's are so catchy, so gorgeous...I love it. Love, love, love.

Guster – Two Points For Honesty Lyrics 18 years ago
Who doesn't relate to this song? It's a feeling we all, as human beings, go through and can understand. It's about how one should have dreams, but also try and acheive them, otherwise there's no point in having them in the first place. And we all feel that sometimes our dreams are so out of reach sometimes, there's no point in putting in that effort because we're just not good enough.

"Can't lift a finger, can't hurt a fly
I found I always move too slowly"

It's about being too scared to follow your dreams for the fear you won't make it, so you simply stop dreaming. You think you're not good enough, that you're just going to fail, so you give up on those dreams because you know you're not going to get there. It's about having no self-confidence when you really need it, about protecting yourself from getting your hopes up.
