Okkervil River – A Glow Lyrics 17 years ago
I like this song too. It continues the black sheep boy theme, with something there, lurking, wanting you to do bad things and comforting/supporting you when you do. Despite the line about the guy lying in a lane, I always thought this song could be about suicide.

Aloha – all the wars Lyrics 17 years ago
"all the bombs that avoided you had somebody else's name scrawled on the clipboard in haste. it was a clerical mistake."

I just discovered this band tonight and this was the first song I heard. Those lines seem so sad.

Glen Phillips – Train Wreck Lyrics 17 years ago
"She\'ll call you up just to hear you say she\'s fine
Then she\'s gone away
And you know there\'s only one more time
You\'ll hear about her again"

That part is always so sad. I think I read somewhere that Glen Phillips was proud of the fact he wrote the part about the crooked CEO before the Enron scandal broke.

If David Bryne sang this song, you would think it WAS Talking Heads.

I think 909 beats refers to the TR-909 drum machine.

I'm surprised no one has commented on this song yet. I always see this one about a guy remembering the good times he had with a former girlfriend. As he remembers all of this, he perversely likes to believe everyone notices him ("nice to believe everyone's looking") even if she has moved on. The ghost imagery seems to be the way he's haunted by how things turned out, whether it's him getting depressed through another lonely night or simply memories he's powerless to change. Either way, as day breaks the cycle repeats. The last lines about nobody waiting punctuates that there's no chance of reconciliation and something about the way they are sung is powerful.

I like the chorus in this song, too. The picture is from when they were together and now they've both changed and life has taken them seperate ways. He hopes that wherever she ended up, it's what she wanted.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Begin Lyrics 18 years ago
This song is about a little boy showing an adult that his father is all around them even though he died.

"Are you older than your life
Eighty days of sorrow
Endless more in sight
Still you child burn bright" -- I think this means that the boy has dealt faster than the adult.

"Press a flashlight up against the wall
You say this is how we knew him, in a little egg
It opened up and this is daddy now" -- The boy uses a metaphor showing his father has gone from being human to being all around.

"And the answer there before me
There's no ending when we die" -- People will remember you even after you die. The adult realizes this and it's a sort of new perspective.

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Come Down Lyrics 18 years ago
It seems like a guy who keeps making all these promises to change and then shoots them down by his actions. Then he's saying that if whomever comes down to where he is it'll help him change. Unfortunately for him, he admits midway through the song that there's no truth in what he's saying.

P.S.: I've always like the simple irony of these two lines:

"i won't repeat myself again
i will not repeat myself again"

Toad the Wet Sprocket – Before You Were Born Lyrics 18 years ago
I always thought this song was written from two points of view. The verses around the chorus are from the friends of someone who's continually depressed who are trying to help while the chorus is from the viewpoint of that depressed person feeling sorry for themselves. To me, the chorus has a different sound than the rest of the song, so that further makes it seem as though it's different from the rest of the song.

Either way, the end of the song always makes me tear up a little cause it resonates well and is uplifting.
