I agree with both the opinions. It is a great song about the expectations that young women have versus the more mature women. The inference might be that a more jaded outlook on relationships (via the older women) may not be preferred. The "look for answers" and "scold me" are not very conducive to a relationship. Elfman walks that fine line and this makes the song work. Great hooks and melody and singing work also! |

I have always thought that the wife was the one that shot her husband and his young mistress. She then is all alone and watches the detectives try to recover the bodies. Her husband can't be wounded because he's got no heart seems to be a bit of a joke as he is dead. The first stanza seems to be a discussion as to the young mistress(es) that are also dead. Great song. |

One of my favorite Elvis songs. Very powerful. The husband is cheating on his wife and newborn child with her friend. Adding lines like "She never thought her love could ever be as strong as this" and "maybe she should just pretend" reveals that the wife's insecurity and reluctance to leave and throw the bum out. She is a bit like the abused spouse that will not press charges..... |
