but i must add.. the line 'A life is time, they teach you growing up The seconds ticking killed us all A million years before the fall hes saying that the fact that we have knowledge that time is passing.. and that we know our lives are limited to so many years - kills us before we were even born... because the pressure of the passing of time is always there in our mind, and makes it impossible for us to just enjoy life the way we would if the constant click of the clock wasnt a relaity. |

people always look too hard for meaning in songs.. as a songwriter myself... when writing songs usually you are piecing together lines that sound good - and chunks of half wisdom into groups ... now im not saying that songs dont have meaning... or even that this one doesnt.. but often the meaning is verging on accidental - stream of consciousness thoughts thrown into rhyme sometimes even with bits of things you wrote long ago that have been seeking a spot in a song for years. still that doesnt mean that this song doesnt mean something... just probably not as much as people make it out to mean to me its a song about the melancholy feeling of life.. our choices and where they lead us - and the doubts and regrets that result from them as well. |

very simple idea - though she makes it sound more complex than it is - ne me quitte pas means 'dont leave me' and in the song she says 'if you are a deity (god) of any sort' in the first verse and in the second she replaces it with 'ghost of christmas past' and the third verse it becomes 'ghost of new york city' - all are just references to god -- though the song is made in her silly way - the concept is simply - if you are the good god the good book claims you to be.. then dont leave us now.. its a sweet and innocent prayer of sorts saying, if you are the good guy ive heard you to be.. protect us frail things .. her lyrics can confuse you if you take them on a surface level.. shes very playful with words |
