Radical Face – Confidants and Fish Hooks Lyrics | 13 years ago |
This song is awesome, but good lord I have no idea what it is about. It is actually two separate songs kind of like Gardenhead/Leave me Alone by NMH |
The Dismemberment Plan – Ellen and Ben Lyrics | 16 years ago |
This song pretty much sums up the fate of a lot of random short-lived friendships you make in your 20's. |
The Long Winters – Delicate Hands Lyrics | 16 years ago |
I held you under wanting to feel you wanting to breathe and I thought you wanted to feel like breathing I think what he is saying is that he tested her by causing her pain, to see her reaction, what he got from doing that is that she still could feel pain. |

I like the line "Someone beat you to me". It has a double meaning, one is the obvious, he is already with someone but the second is that she was beaten emotionally or however, to the point where she cannot have a relationship. |
Sufjan Stevens – Casimir Pulaski Day Lyrics | 17 years ago |
Wow, what a song. It may as well be published as a short story, it deals with so much. Yes, he is a christian and this song is about how "God works in mysterious ways" to use a cliche. There is such innocence in this song, I can only imagine being so young and having an experience like this. The opening lyrics are so pure, he brought her cheap flowers and a 4-H stone. Such a simple act on behalf of an adolescent, but those are the experiences that shape us into the adults we become. |
Peter Gabriel – Digging In The Dirt Lyrics | 17 years ago |
IMHO, his best song by far. Definitely singing to his shrink. "Just drive the car" means sit there and listen to me vent. |
Beulah – What Will You Do When Your Suntan Fades? Lyrics | 17 years ago |
It is about getting older. |

Neutral Milk Hotel – Two-Headed Boy Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I have been listening to this album on and off for a few years, even before I knew it was about Anne Frank - although I surmised that Holland 1945 had something to od with the holocaust - When i first listened to it, I kind of absorded the lyrics without trying to research what they were about and I always thought that the Two headed boy imagery was some sort of reference to a sort of duality that exists in every male - I guess similar to the id and the ego (but not exactly)- where the id (for lack of a better term) is a primative half-formed brother you keep in a "jar" and bring out when it is needed - sex etc - all the while it is tapping away trying to get you to listen to it. However, i have been listening again and Holy Crap the album is so very much about Anne Frank it is insane, however I still kind of stick to my original idea. I'm sure it means a number of things. Jeff Mangum is obviously a creative genius I can't imagine being able to release a piece of art like this at 26 - what it would do to you. No wonder he kind of fell off the map. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – The King of Carrot Flowers Pt. 1 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
I always found this album to be about a guy stuck between two worlds the real life where he is abused and destroyed and some escapist imaginary one where he finds redemption. This song is where the two worlds meld. I love this album but I find it very disturbing. It is a powerful piece of work. Probably the most powerful rock album I've ever heard. |
Neutral Milk Hotel – Holland, 1945 Lyrics | 18 years ago |
This song is literally about Anne Frank - she died a few weeks before the Allies liberated Europe. However on a broarder level the song is about Loss, grief and human resilience. |
The Decemberists – Sixteen Military Wives Lyrics | 18 years ago |
The song isn't exactly anti war inasmuch as it is a commentary on how events and messages get muffled and distorted through the filters of the media. It seems to be anti-liberal as much as it is anti-war. As for the video, it seems to me that it is a very literal interperation of a certain aspect of the video. BTW, the phenomenon described by the song are not unique to America. The tail wags the dog the world over. |
The Shins – Gone For Good Lyrics | 18 years ago |
He is not engaged nor is he married, but the person he is with is starting to get antsy about those things, perhaps suggesting them. The "I said no vows" line is a reminder to the lover about the relationship's initial conditions. The sitting on the fence lines mean, that he has to be forthright with her and say that iam leaving, no more walking on eggshells. It seems he was trying to passive aggressively get her to rid herself of him, but he eventually tells her to get lost. He then goes on to tell her in a lot more eloquent way that she has wasted her time with him and is a fool for doing so, which isn't exactly fair. The speaker wants to be alone. |
