Talk Talk – Runeii Lyrics

pretty sure it's "Runeii"
this is such a beautiful, peaceful, eerie song, like a huge space in early morning dawn. the lyrics read somewhat spiteful, though, really doesn't jive... |

The Walkmen – Thinking of a Dream I had Lyrics
| 15 years ago

I think he's oscillating between wanting to direct all the rage and blame on the other person, and being suicidally depressed and guilty. In the end he's just reflecting on all of that while waiting at the next juncture in his life (i.e. the train), maybe just thinking how he could do it all better the next time. |

Yeasayer – 2080 Lyrics

this song irks me in that it gives such a mixed message. the whole thing reeks of "stop and smell the flowers, maaaan!" hippie idealism, yet at the end they have the gall to use children's voices, as if stressing the importance of the future to us. sure we shouldn't always be worrying about what a mess of the world we're making for our children and children's children, but at the same time turning a completely blind eye to it is markedly more dangerous. the voices at the end would've fit much better and been much more moving if the song was more a celebration of the potential for making a better world for our children, rather than empty New Age aphorisms. |

Grizzly Bear – Lullabye Lyrics

maybe the narrator's being told to "chin up, cheer up" by friends, but then retorts with "my love's another kind," something so much more passionate and intense. it's like the sound of someone realizing how far they'd go to prove their love, to the brink of madness. |

another song ruined on in rainbows. would it have hurt to make it an ELECTRIC guitar?

y'know, if they were going to change the song completely for fuck-all reason, they could've at least made it a GOOD song...
in rainbows has to be the most disappointing thing this year. |

i really wonder if that beep was intentional or not. in any case i can image the band listening to it for the first time and being struck by how perfect it sounds. exquisitely timed if that's the case :P |

Okkervil River – John Allyn Smith Sails Lyrics

this song hit me like a ton of brick the other day. it's such a heart-breaking story, and when it breaks into sloop john b it sounds so joyous but sad at the same time, like he was only waiting all that time just to escape from this world. beautiful beautiful song. okkervil river's probably one of my 5 favorite bands now because of this. |

Talk Talk – Ascension Day Lyrics

this song is so climatic, the spindly guitar just gets more ferocious and building, like the crash of waves and disaster. lyrically and thematically it sounds like someone trying to escape their fate again and again, only to have it crashing down upon them in the end. it's amazing how this band can conjure up impossible space and tightly wound fierceness in the same song. |

i agree it could be about not being able to and not really needing to understand "god" or religion, in that the world itself as we experience it is beautiful and euphoric enough without it. i think it also may be a testament to losing or "drowning" oneself in truth, escaping superstition and the strict confines of religion to embrace life in all it's grand and stark reality, and maybe only in that can we find true escape, enlightenment, and deliverance. |

acute angles- less than 90 degrees, close to each other, maybe reflecting on the small choices that made such a big difference in his life

Elliott Smith – Ostriches and Chirping Lyrics

so much derision for this record. if it's because of the production it's very raw and i believe very in tune to what elliott would've wanted. i can't even see how the producers could've edited the songs very much. they sound very elliott in sound and spirit, very authentic and raw. i'm sure not many posthumous albums end up so great. |

R.E.M. – Chorus and The Ring Lyrics

i think this song is just about the general je ne sais quoi of life, just the things that happen and we have no real explanation to them, we just have to deign them as divine intervention (machines of god). very underrated REM song :) |

is there a different version used in entourage, cause perry farrel's vocals sound different, and the music seems a little harder in the entourage version, but that's probably just me. they might've just edited it all to hell ;) |

Pink Floyd – Time Lyrics

one of the things that amazes me so much about this band is how it took the absolutely mundane (the simple passage of time) and turned it into something immediate, passionate, worrying, sorrowful, and intriguing. the "no one told you when to run, you've missed the starting gun" line gets me every time; it makes me lament these opportunities i've missed but at the same time emphasizes with me. it speaks of mid-life crisis too, like you're trying to compensate for your wasted years. i'm not even sure if it's meant to be a warning, to galvanize us to some action in our lives. it may even be telling us to not bother attempting to make up for lost time, that we'll just squander our lives in the meantime, miss the beauty and enjoyment of it as we're furiously trying to live our lives "the way they're meant to be lived." it can mean either or both, i'm not sure. all i know is that it brings to live many feelings in me, and at the very least makes me consider the manner in which i'm living my life. |

British Sea Power – The Lonely Lyrics

incredible song, probably my second fave BSP song next to Carrion
something about it really emphasizes the idea of loneliness. drinking alone and unwanted, reflecting on past loves, thinking on what might've been, ti's all here. something about it, like whiling away the hours hoping something/someone will come along to make it all meaningful. makes longing a bittersweet thing. |

Mogwai – Mogwai Fear Satan Lyrics
|
but there's beauty and escape and surges of joy in the music that i hear. the whole thing just sounds so fucking ecstatic, despite how raw it sounds. especially the flute at the end, sounds so peaceful, worldly... maybe "fear satan" is a metaphor, just fearing the darkness in our hearts, the capacity for us to do "evil"...
in my mind i always envision a battle of sorts between good and evil. well, to be honest actually something a little more indepth... i could see a movie being done for it, something animated maybe, but i don't know if i want to say for wont of actually being the guy who makes it. ;) |

not to be a jerk but they "just" mentioned above that it's the guy from super furry animals. though he could be wrong. eh, it's a nice little song. i don't know why but i always thought they said something like "incanto" over and over through the song. |
