St. Vincent – Just the Same But Brand New Lyrics 12 years ago
One of my favorites! I just saw St. Vincent live and she told a story about how she came to write this song: Her friend is an interior designer in NYC and one of her client's was a woman in her 90s and her house hadn't been redone since the 50s so all of the furniture and stuff in her home was all 1950s style. And the woman wanted exact replicas of the furniture and interior, and, as she put it, she wanted it "just the same but brand new".

Simon and Garfunkel – Old Friends Lyrics 13 years ago
I, too, am surprised that so few people have commented on this song. Paul Simon will always continue to awe me with his lyrics, no matter how many times I listen to these songs. Even just today it finally hit me why rhyming "old friends" with "bookends" is one of the most emotionally moving combination of words I have ever heard. I have heard this song so many times, but when I thought about the concept of old friends being like bookends, it really hit me. I used to think it was just imagery to show how the friends are just sitting in silence on a park bench. But think about it. Bookends hold books together that contain stories. The image of old friends being like bookends is so incredibly true and moving. Two old friends, sitting on a park bench, countless stories and memories between them.

Absolutely brilliant.

Belle & Sebastian – Write About Love Lyrics 13 years ago
I love how Belle & Sebastian so cleverly write songs about how life can really be drag. And they do it intelligently, not in a sob-story, over-emotional kind of way. I noticed that theme in this album especially Come On Sister and I'm Not Living in the Real World. So good. Everything about this album is just another reason to love B&S even more.

Sufjan Stevens – Now That I'm Older Lyrics 13 years ago
This is my favorite from The Age of Adz. Does this remind anyone of Pittsfield? I feel like it has a similar sound and tone to it. And it just so happens as I was just looking up the lyrics for Pittsfield, I noticed these lines...

"Now that I'm older, wiser and working less
I may regret having left the place a mess"

Perhaps there is a connection? I say it's at least worth taking a look at. Either way, these are both two very beautiful songs. Sufjan never disappoints.

Norah Jones – Rosie's Lullaby Lyrics 17 years ago
My friend brought up the idea of how this song reminds her of the Titanic. At first I was like "what? no!" but it really makes alot of sense. Especially this part:

"The big ships are rollin',
And lightin' up the night,
And she calls out, but they just her pass by."

Like when Rose is calling out to the other boats to save her. Plus Rose, Rosie?! There's got to be some connection there. Either this song was inspired by the movie or something.

Wilco – Ashes of American Flags Lyrics 17 years ago
Oh, and I agree with dross about the circularity of the leaves and flags. That pretty much what I've always imagined it to mean.

At a show, Nick was explaining what this song was about. He said he didn't know how to really say it, and that what he was about to say might sound immature, and then he proceeded to say it was about "doing it". Great song, I love it. Yes, the ending is great!
