Winds – Reason's Desire Lyrics 15 years ago
Hm, I was thinking it was about Lucifer, too, or simply the narrator's fall from grace. When I consider both of these interpretations, they give me different feelings and reactions to the song. Definitely one of my favorites.

Porcupine Tree – Normal Lyrics 16 years ago
Agreed, Carvalho!

I can't say I prefer "Normal" over "Sentimental", but this song sure has a special place in my heart that "Sentimental" doesn't touch on. I think this is because of the way he sings the verses, especially the first. The emotion is a lot more raw to me.

Porcupine Tree – Cheating the Polygraph Lyrics 16 years ago
Great interpretations. Nil Recurring is indeed an amazing EP. In a sense, it is comfort lying: lying we do to avoid situations, to uplift ourselves, to look "better" to others. In fact, isn't this what has become of a lot of factors of our society? We lie to make our lives more convenient, less complicated. To try and sort of create this illusion of uniformity-- that we are the same as all others.

In another sense, I feel the narrator is a pathological liar who is lost in his lifestyle, yet doesn't mind any more due to the desensitized feeling someone above me mentioned. After you do it so much, it just becomes an integral part of you-- thus him "feel[ing]" his "soul going". He is lost in that downward spiral.

I hadn't a clue what this song meant to me, other than the longing for one who is not here, which many of us can feel constantly in our lives. It's beautiful and heartfelt.

Incubus – Idiot Box Lyrics 17 years ago
I did catch the allusion to "Brave New World" with the first line in this song. Well, actually, vise versa. I am in the process of reading it right now, and caught it once I had read something very similar to what Brandon has in "Idiot Box". I heard the song before I began reading the book.

Great song. Whenever I am inactive and falling into the sofa to watch television, I find myself thinking about it.

Dredg – Ode to the Sun Lyrics 17 years ago
That's an interesting observation (the Catcher one), schaefer, and no one should be deemed "unworthy" to translate and interpret lyrics, as the beauty of it lies in the fact that many people can see the same lines in such different perspectives based on their individual experiences.

As for the song: a masterpiece, in my opinion.

Something Corporate – I Want To Save You Lyrics 17 years ago
But Andrew also says "I need you. Save me too." He loves her. He doesn't want to just make her life better, he'll be making his own better through her as well. Perhaps he's caught in this frame of life too, and together they can save one another.

Incubus – Consequence Lyrics 17 years ago
I, too, wonder what he says after "son becomes a man" line. It kind of sounds like he's paraphrasing the line and saying "*something* before he becomes a man."

Also such an awesome song. It's important to be wary of what you're doing. I try and use this as a form of self-control when it comes to things that I KNOW I will regret. I think the wisdom of knowing I will regret something is a privilege enough for me to not act upon it.

Incubus – Drive Lyrics 17 years ago
"Water over wine" doesn't have to be a metaphor connected to religious meanings. Sure, it carries strong connotations from Christianity, but whenever I hear those particular lines, I just find him to genius to have found an artistic way of conveying the water (being the unconventional, free-flowing way) over the wine (the common, fear-driven path)... and I myself am a Christian. I am in the stage of life where I realize the freedom behind liberation-- behind driving myself and not allowing myself to be driven-- and as I evolve, this song has been guiding me. Only recently have I understand that "whatever tomorrow brings, I'll be there" could possibly be directed to himself. And that makes the song all the more intimate to me.

"So if I decide to waiver my chance to be
one of the hive will I choose water over wine
and hold my own and drive?
It's driven me before and it seems to be the way
that everyone else gets around.
But lately I'm beginning to find
that when I drive myself my light is found."

So touching....

Bob Dylan – Masters of War Lyrics 17 years ago
I believe he was trying to portray that there are people out there who carry similar mindsets, and who have created beautiful pieces to manifest their views. Bob Dylan doesn't stand alone with his perception of war. Definitely not. We only don't know about them because they never have hit mainstream success.

Thin Lizzy – Massacre Lyrics 17 years ago
I never knew such an amazing song existed until I was listening to the recordings of the Axis of Justice Radio Show (Serj Tankian and Tom Morello). They played this song on a show concerning genocide. Such a touching song, with poignant lyrics, and a haunting message about genocides and massacres all around the world.

Incubus – Pendulous Threads Lyrics 17 years ago
I usually don't compare bands often, because each artist is credible and admirable for their individual works; but my GOODNESS. Being a large Mars Volta fan, I felt such a similarity here. And it's definitely not a bad thing at all. I love Incubus' ambiguity and fearlessness to experiment. When I first heard the lines, "Mend this careless thread, it’s gone askew", the lyrics reminded me of TMV... but then the guitars... and the weird solo section, and riff style.. it completely threw me into a twisted confusion of TMV and Incubus. I love it!

Incubus – Punch Drunk Lyrics 17 years ago
A nice, mellow track. :] It gives me a very Radiohead-esque vibe. I love it. Some of it doesn't sound like Brandon to me. Everytime I hear it, I just slow down ... like the pace of the song.

Incubus – Love Hurts Lyrics 17 years ago
"Is it a spell that I am under
Keeping me from seeing the real thing"

Personally, I see those lines, individually, as an inability to understand why he has not been successful thusfar in love. (Wondering if he's under a spell that has kept him from this realistic form of love- not this idealized, overdone form of it.) Though, how it connects to the song as a whole, I don't know. Perhaps he hasn't found love yet, but he's already in a state of understanding.. he is aware of love's holistic nature: how it will sometimes bring pain, but is generally beneficial to humans.

Incubus – Look Alive Lyrics 17 years ago
Hm, I wanted to add that the title is "Look Alive", and that is the reoccuring theme throughout the song. Notice how it is "LOOK" alive and not "BE" alive, or a word that would indicate something holistic. Looking is merely a presentation, a show, ... which leads me to believe even moreso the irony/satire.

Incubus – Look Alive Lyrics 17 years ago
Hm.. I've only recently heard this song, and glanced over the lyrics just now. I love the up-beatness of it all; however, I get this satirical and sarcastic vibe when I listen to it and read the lyrics.

It seems, to me, as though Brandon is criticizing our need to ensure a certain fakeness when we are in front of a camera. He uses phrase choices such as "Like jealous Dior mascara down your face", and "But you've been walking eyes to feet
In dark sunglasses". The dark sunglasses could be the conceal to what lies underneath. The girl may not be content behind them. It could have some dual meaning, and relate to how we try and appear satisfied outside, but inside, we are dying in grief and solitude. We are not really living how we'd like to.

OR, of course, it could be the absolute opposite. He could be praising the concept of being able to capture moments on cameras and such. This is Incubus, after all. Their songs are so ambiguous. :)

Incubus – The Warmth Lyrics 17 years ago
The "warmth" talked about in the song doesn't need to be confined to one view. It can vary amongst individuals, and I see it as totally ambiguous. But, generally, I see it as all the positive energy the universe can possess, and all that which can brighten our mentality up. It taught me never to underestimate a smile from someone. A simple smile is enough.

"I'd like to close my eyes and go numb
but there's a cold wind coming from
the top of the highest high-rise today. "

Because Brandon uses the word "BUT", it makes me feel as though he'd like to go numb, but it's not really an option, because all the negative input is not allowing him to do so. Helpless, he cannot avoid it.

"It's not a breeze cause' it blows hard.
Yes and it wants me to discard the humanity I know,
watch the warmth blow away. "

Possibly the most meaningful words, to me, in the song. He, of course, is deciphering the negative feeling. And his use of the word "breeze" reminds me of "Nice to Know You" (To obtain a bird's eye is to turn a blizzard to a breeze."). It makes me think of this because it seems as though he metaphorically utilizes "breeze" and "blizzard" to describe the two extremities of life. I completely connect to this, because when I am kind, and am returned with blank stares and rude comments, I feel the warmth, the energy, disappear, and I want to resort to a bitter feeling. It seems so much easier that way. But that doesn't mean it's better.

"Do you think I should adhere to that pressing new frontier?"

That line leads me to believe that the coldness he is feeling results from societal constraints. But, however, he's questioning it. A frontier is some type of advancement in a field, or a break-through idea. However, does he need to settle there? Why can't he expand further without being criticized or regarded as obscene/insane?

Very long-winded. But this song evokes so many feelings in me, as it does the many others who have a passion with this song.

Incubus – Diamonds and Coal Lyrics 17 years ago
Don't feel your explained it in a corny way. I truly know what you're talking about!

I agree. It seems a lot of the album has reoccuring themes about realistic love, as opposed to publicized, idealistic love. Nothing is guarenteed, and nothing is ever perfect. Even love. (In my opinion, of course.)

Incubus – Love Hurts Lyrics 17 years ago
"Love hurts…
But sometimes it’s a good hurt
And it feels like I’m alive"

Easily the most impactive lines in the song (to me). He is aware that love is not all beauty and an endless happiness, but accepts this, and is searching for this attainable love. Not the idealistic, constantly talked about love, but a more realistic one.

Incubus – Dig Lyrics 17 years ago
I look at it in the sense of a person digging through the layers of superficiality and uncovering what really lies underneath in another person. If one of the two becomes bitter or wretched in the world crowded by such negative feelings, the other will "dig" out the good in the other, and make them whole again. Such an amazing songs I have passed on to my friends.

Incubus – Quicksand Lyrics 17 years ago
I love the ambient quality of the song. And the singing done by Brandon at the beginning is so poignant and beautiful. A great start to the album. I feel it connects well with "Anna Molly" (although it doesn't come until later in the album). To me, it's about being somewhere in the middle of the mess of love. Not knowing if that person for him exists, thus naming her an anomaly. It also transitions nicely into "A Kiss to Send Us Off".

Incubus – Anna Molly Lyrics 17 years ago
Well, a lot of music would be referred to as "another pop band" or "another metal band" or "another emo band" until one actually gets into the music and releases depth from the words.

I loved the interpretations already presented here. It's great that a site like this could gather such ambiguous meanings to songs.

Incubus – Are You In? Lyrics 17 years ago
Heh, it may sound weird, but I always felt that the entire song is sarcastic. I know that may or may not be intended, but it just feels as though Incubus could be making fun of the "in crowd" stereotype. In the video they are dressed up and ridiculously glamorous. Its effect is almost satirical and ironic.

Of course, Incubus is all about living like to the fullest in which ever meaning of the words, and if they feel drugs and partying is a way to do so, kudos to them. "What's so wrong with being happy?"

Something Corporate – The Runaway Lyrics 17 years ago
Wow, yeah. I didn't see any stalker-ish undertones before reading the comments for this song. However, when I heard the lines "Cause by now, I know you better than you know yourself" and "You better not run", I got mixed feelings. Does this fellow believe her to be a fragile, inadequate being who needs his guidance for survival? Other than that, it just makes me feel the narrator is so desperate not to lose this person. She must be so significant to him, that he feels he cannot stand life without her by his side. Beautifully done.

Something Corporate – I Want To Save You Lyrics 17 years ago
I felt I needed to share the significance of this song somewhere.

This girl in the song, this fictional character created by Andrew, has changed my life... in such a drastic way. Ever since I started listening to it, and understanding what dilemma this girl was in, I started feeling more empathy for humans I don't know very well personally. Whenever I see someone in distress, I am reminded of this song. And whenever I see someone I, for whatever reason, interpret as "emotion-less", I rethink it and remember that there is so much to that person's life that I don't know about. All thanks to this song, really. It makes me realize that there is so much about people that we don't understand, or know. Situations they are in, their emotions, and things we never take into account.

Dredg – Jamais Vu Lyrics 17 years ago
The solo is amazing. It almost speaks as loudly as the words themselves. I can relate to the person who feels empty when listening to this song, though that was when I first began falling in love with it. Now? I don't know what I feel. It's like a puzzle: I want to put it together and understand it as a whole concept. But it's so difficult for my mind to comprehend what they could possibly mean. Honestly one of the most beautiful songs that have ever graced me.

Dredg – Spitshine Lyrics 17 years ago
You can ponder on and on about who he's referring to that "spit shined his corroded halo". Someone (or something) came into his life and uplifted him. But, it throws me off about it was packaged away, and was left to decay. Maybe the narrator was uplifted for a certain amount of time, but it turned out to be short-lived, because someone/something left his life... leaving his halo to decay.

Hoobastank – Disappear Lyrics 17 years ago
Usually, I don't judge a group by one song, but Hoobastank has totally earned my respect from this song. Mostly because it doesn't make me feel crazy with how I feel. My boyfriend is my life. I love him to death, and lately, whenever I'm without him, I feel so lonely, so empty. I wait for the moment to be standing next to him once again, and to be holding him. Sometimes it gets to be so intensily painful. I just revisited this song tonight, and I realized how much I relate to this.

Dredg – The Canyon Behind Her Lyrics 18 years ago
This is an absolutely amazing, cinematic closure to an amazingly spiritual album.

"Though half of me is gone,
The lonesome part remains."

It almost feels that the "half" the narrator has lost is his sanity and/or identity. The half that made him who he is, the half that described his invidivual being. So he is left wondering if anybody feels the same way, as he is trapped in self-isolation and paranoia.

Just what I get from it.

Dredg – Triangle Lyrics 18 years ago
Actually, thinking about it again, I almost feel that Gavin is saying that, although we may protest and lecture about idealism, a passive nature will always be in our system. That maybe being spiritually passive (embracing silence) is what brings us the peaceful serenity we desire.

Dredg – Triangle Lyrics 18 years ago
I see this song as a spiritual description of the cycle of life, with hints here and there of a society that has succumbed to passivism.

I've always noticed that when staying silent, I can observe the environment around me so much more. Whether that be humans, plant life, or anything- I just feel the environment. We ARE born into silence.

But, the "born into silence" portion can also be about generations being born into a passive environment. The silence could represent the silent majority of this land, where mostly everyone succumbs to their surroundings, and leaves issues unstated. These newly borns are surrounded by humans who "live like penguins in the desert", and many may follow the penguins lead.

The chorus sounds like it is in the perspective of someone who is passive. It almost gives a hopeless vibe: that no matter what, it is impossible to escape the slumber we have fallen into.

There are so many things that could be said about this song, and there are also a bunch of ways of taking the lyrics. Who can know for sure? My absolute favorite Dredg song.

Dredg – Hung Over on a Tuesday Lyrics 18 years ago
It could be about alcoholism. Addiction in general.

I'd rather just say it should and could be generalized to any situation in one's life where one feels out of control. Something is controlling them. For some people it could be an external source like alcohol, drugs. Some internal- jealousy, hypocrisy.

I think the narrator is just kissing some kind of thing that controlled him goodbye.

Dredg – The Tanbark Is Hot Lava Lyrics 18 years ago
This song reminds me of a friend. He has suddenly changed- closing himself from all of his past friends and only opening up to a select group of people.. rendering his old, yet true, friends pointless. But the lines "The old returns while the new can bore. Cause you're the one who fell into a self-created hell. There is no way out when you build a stubborn shell that shields from any help. We've worn it out" completely reminds me of how I feel.

"Please.. don't...go...stay" - How I feel about our friendship.

I think the narrator has just grown frustrated with the situation. This person is a recluse and will not open up to any support and the narrator has given up.

submissions
Dredg – Zebraskin Lyrics 18 years ago
I agree with the alcoholism interpretation. It's rather direct. However, Id like to point out that this song switches from past tense to present. The verses are present- as if the narrator is reflecting back on how it felt. The chorus may be stating how he finally got through the stage in his life, because he may have lost his best friends, but hasn't.

submissions
Dredg – Sang Real Lyrics 18 years ago
To me, it reminds me of all the human roles we play. The verses show this. And I guess I can say the chrous is stating that all of this.. in the end.. may mean nothing. "From the inside out we will fall." We created the world around us from the inside out. And we will destroy it that way, too. "Soon this all will come to an end." We're mass-marketing and overproducing our way to self-destruction.

Kind of a more radical way to look at the song, but that is just what I get out of it. And I have to say the chorus tears my eyes... the music and how it fuses with the words. So meaningful.

Radiohead – The Bends Lyrics 18 years ago
I'm barely beginning my voyage into the world of Radiohead, and I have started with their first album "The Bends". The title track of the album has to be my favorite.
