Band of Horses – Is There a Ghost Lyrics 16 years ago
My interpretation is this.

He never lived alone, or, when he could sleep he didn't live alone. He's saying he lived alone, because when he was with someone he was so carefree that he didn't even think of the possibility of ever losing that. He was alone in the sense that he had no worries about these issues. Taking his partner (yeah, let's say it's about a love relationship to simplify it) for granted during the relationship, he was too late in realizing what he was blessed with. Once she left him, he is haunted by what he once had in flesh but now only has in memory. He can't sleep anymore, and he had no idea he was so depending on his partner until he was left alone. He did not realize what he had until it was gone.
The ghost troubling him is coming to terms with being alone again, having to re-learn every-day life such as sleeping and eating, without the companionship he once had.
That's my interpretation, probably because that's exactly what I'm going through right now. I was so blind to what a wonderful thing I had, and when I realized it was too late. And now I'm alone and haunted by what could have been if I hadn't been so fucking slow. I'm a moron. A heartbroken moron :(

Neutral Milk Hotel – Oh Comely Lyrics 16 years ago
A better version of my post, so please read this one:

Here comes yet another interpretation of this beautiful song, though I don't think I'm even close to right and I'm therefor not claiming to be. It's simply a theory among others, though I firmly believe that the song is connected to the tragedy of Little Birds, which tells a completely different story than what I'm about to state. However you never know - parts of the album do mention conjoined twins, especially the ending of Oh Comely (Place your body here - Let your skin begin to blend itself with mine). You don't have to take that literally, and at most times I don't, but when listening through the whole album for such indications I very much see a pattern of this extreme closeness, this impossibility to even for a second escape from someone or something, be it a person, a feeling or a situation.

"Daddy please hear this song that I sing
In your heart there's a spark that just screams
for a lover to bring
a child to your chest that could lay as you sleep
and love all you have left like your boy used to be
long ago wrapped in sheets warm and wet"

The father dreamed of a normal happy family, a son to raise and love. But when the boys are born they turn out to be siamese twins, a freakshow, something so far away from what he was planning and hoping for. I even imagine the "wrapped in sheets warm and wet" could be a urine reference, haha. What I mean by that is that changing a diaper isn't much fun - until you do it on your own firstborn child and realize the joy of parenting and nurturing your own offspring. But this father never got attached to his babies like that, because of their freakshow qualities he can't feel that they are really his children. The boy he's referring to in these lines is the "dream boy", the son he wanted but didn't get, though he keeps loving the idea of that boy when his actual son/sons need his affection and wish they hadn't disappointed him.

"Blister please with those wings in your spine
Love to be with a brother of mine
How he'd love to find
your tongue in his teeth in a struggle to find
secret songs that you keep wrapped in boxes so tight
sounding only at night as you sleep"

A blister is, kinda like a siamese twin, an outgrowth on your body. And maybe not something you enjoy living with, but something you will adapt to, and therefor feel empty without when it's gone. I know I and others do this with destructional behaviour - even though it isn't beneficial you end up not knowing how to live without it. The wings in the spine could be that they were conjoined through the spine in some way. And the tounge in his teeth is just a reference to that they were so physically and emotionally close always that they literally were one body - my tounge is yours, yours is mine. The struggle to find secret songs could be the struggle of reaching, of fitting in, of doing things and being flexible and physically active like a normal child when your brother is attached to you. Maybe they are attached to eachother in a very awkward position that makes everything a physical struggle - and the secret songs that sound at night as they sleep might be the boys dreaming of being free from eachother and being and functioning like normal children - however they love eachother too much to actually speak of such thoughts, they keep them hidden from eachother and the only time they come up is unintentionally in their sleep. When the boys are separated one of them dies - where he used to be attached to his brother he now gets wings and goes to heaven, and the other one survives and can't follow him there.

"In my dreams you're alive and you're crying,
as your mouth moves in mine soft and sweet,
rings of flowers around your eyes and I'll love you
for the rest of your life..."

The boys have been separated, and the one that survived still feels attached to his brother. Now when he sleeps instead of dreaming of being normal and free from his twin, he dreams of again being stuck to him because he doesn't feel like a whole person. The dead brother speaks to him, loves him, and cries for him in his dreams and there will never be another love greater than the one to his twin brother. The 'for the rest of your life' might be indicating that in a way his brother, though dead, is in fact still alive because they did share their body/bodies, and the surviving boy will carry on the memory and life of his brother until he too dies. However, when he dies they will both as individuals be forgotten, because their father never loved them like he should have, their mother dies before he does (referring to the ending), and they will always be considered somewhat freaks of nature in a way that makes them emotionally untouchable. All they have to rely on is eachother, in life and in death.

"Brother see we are one in the same
and you left with your head filled with flames
and you watched as your brains fell out through your teeth
Push the pieces in place
Make your smile sweet to see
Don't you take this away
I'm still wanting my face on your cheek"

Again, they are one complete person, and when separated they are broken. He wants his face on his brother's cheek - he wants to be physically attached to him and share his skin, his cheek, his features, his everything. If they were also attached at the head somehow, that might be why his brains fell out through his teeth, they had to crack their skull somehow to separate them. But it could also be that they were actually separated AFTER the brother's dead, and that he actually shot himself still attached to his brother. Maybe because of the disappointment he feels guilty of attaching to his dad - considering how it from the start is directed at the father. His brother wants the impossible, he wants to put the pieces (the brothers are the pieces that need to be pushed together) in place so that he again can be happy and not be alone.

"And when we break we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place where some holy spectacle lies
And when we break we'll wait for our miracle
God is a place you will wait for the rest of your life"

When they break - when they are separated that isn't a healing process, that isn't fixing anything like it should, instead it destroys what was beautiful and breaks them apart. God is in heaven, with the dead twin brother. The miracle is them being together again, and the dead brother will wait in heaven for his brother to come and for them to get re-attached to eachother.

"Two headed boy
She is all you could need
She will feed you tomatoes and radio wires
and retire to sheets safe and clean
But don't hate her when she gets up to leave"

This is about the boy's mother that loves him like a mother should, and that takes care of him and doesn't break under the pressure like their father did. She does what every loving mother does, she tells him that she will always be around, she will give him everything he needs and as much as she can fill the hole after his brother. The safe and clean sheets are just a metaphore for a mother's nurture and comfort. However, she won't be around always, she will die one day and when she does he shouldn't hate her for having promised she won't go anywhere because that's just the way it goes. He might hate her not only for leaving, but for going up to heaven and there being reunited with his darling brother, and he will be left on the ground to live alone with the only people who ever loved him for real at peace in heaven. If this had been the story of the song, it would be even more sad than the Little Birds-story... mostly because of the apathy. How unnecessary all their suffering is, and the suffering of every family is. It doesn't create anything good, it doesn't even make you strong. It just puts you in a stand by mode, where you can't cope with what's happening because it's too much/too painful to handle, and you can't escape because it's involving yourself or is happening too close for you to look away. Someway this would be an example of when the father cares as little as possible. Because, like it or not, Little Birds tells a story of a father's passionate love to a son no matter how disturbing that is to realize. It is an attempt to save him from hell, not to kill him because of personal disapproval. So yeah, I'm really split about how to feel about both my theory and the Little Birds theory, and the other's theories circulating. But we can all agree that it's a sad story either way. A story of love, faith and apathy, but to me it's not hate. And sometimes you just wish hate was involved because it's easier to dismiss. Because really, hate isn't what is the most dangerous in this world. It's the lack of reaction and response when it emerges. There, I leave you with something to ponder.

Tadaa!

Take care, everyone.

Neutral Milk Hotel – Communist Daughter Lyrics 17 years ago
I feel like many others before me have pointed out that the communism is a metaphore for how she shares herself with everyone, and is used because of that. The description of the setting, such as the the seaweed water, the twisting bridges etc is just to state that nothing has changed. Maybe she's desperate for change or healing, and there's nowhere else to go and nobody wants to just hold her for ever but rather have sex with her and then leave her stained with semen. When that has happened too many times she starts feeling ashamed and broken and looks into herself to find the comfort she needs. It's as if she is still a sexual being, she still needs that sexual release and intimacy, but she feels too dirty to share it with others again so she makes love/has sex with herself instead, because that is the one person she can trust to always stay close. I can relate to that in many ways.

The Weakerthans – Elegy for Elsabet Lyrics 17 years ago
I have to comment... I love this band, and this song is amazing. It cot very personal for me a couple of years ago when I was a personal assistent for a deaf girl, she was nine years old. Her mother was a dancer and her father was a tenor, they had met in the theatre and fell for each other's love for music. Imagine having a deaf child! I always felt that they were a bit disappointed in her. Anyways, this girl loved dancing but couldn't hear the rythm so I installed a lamp that blinked to the beat in the music I put on. And we danced every day, to all kinds of music, I just had my playlist on shuffle and whatever came on had a new beat and a new dance to go with it. Anyways, one day this song came on and for the first time I realized what it was about for real, and I got really sad. She didn't understand why, and when I sad that it was a sad song she wanted to read the lyrics. So I got them for her. She read them, then hugged me, smiled and said "It's not that bad". That was such an amazing moment that I'll never forget. I don't have any contact with her now because they moved abroad, but I'll always remember how grown-up she seemed when she comforted me when she's the deaf kid. She was a marvelous child!

Regina Spektor – Somedays Lyrics 17 years ago
Like many others I identify with this song alot, but everyone have their own story for it.

For me it's about searching for something or someone that makes you feel complete. And how the desperation of that search makes you hurt others as well as yourself.

"Somedays aren't yours at all
They come and go as if they're someone elses days
They come and leave you behind someone elses face
And it's harsher than yours
And colder than yours
They come in all quiet sweep up and then they leave
And you don't hear a single floor board creak
They're so much stronger than the friends you try to keep by your side"

This is a description of the emptyness inside that just grows and grows, and you want to fill it so badly that you tell yourself fall in love with anyone you meet, but you soon realize that you feel even more lonely with someone you don't really connect with. So you continously leave your lovers behind to find the one that's right for you. And this behaviour hurts the ones you break up with, and it makes you look kinda cheap and it's hard to keep up relations with people that don't understand what you're going through and why you keep doing the same mistake again and again.

"Downtown, downtown
I'm not here, not anymore
I've gone away
Don't call me don't write"

This is the part when you're with someone, maybe you've settled down for a while but you still feel that it's something or someone else you're supposed to be with. So this is the break-up note, the part where you once again leave the one you're with behind and just drop everything and go out to keep trying to fill the void inside. You can't explain why or how so you don't want to be confronted by him/her, you just want him/her to let you slip away.

"I'm in love with your daughter
I want to have her baby
I'm in love with your daughter
So can I please"

This is the lover stating his/her true love for you, he/she's fallen for you and thought he/she was the one who could hold you down and make you happy, so he/she is not yet accepting that he/she's just another of the hearts you've broken on the way.

So, to me this is a song about not having control or knowledge of your own feelings. You do the same mistake, get hurt and hurt others in the same manner time after time, but your heart is so focused on finding the cure for your emptiness that you can't stop yourself. In a bigger picture you could replace the love affairs with for example some sort of drug abuse or any other kind of selfdestructive lack of control and search for something you can't put your finger on yet can't live without.

Third Eye Blind – Wounded Lyrics 17 years ago
I love this song. But I've gotta say this, if someone wrote this song for me I would feel kinda pressured to heal rather than taking my time. I don't think someone who hasn't been raped or abused like this understands how hard it is to return to a normal life. I get that it's very frustrating to be close to someone who hurts this much and that you can't do much, but it's a very fine line between encouraging and pressuring someone. That's all I wanted to say :)

The Cure – Close to Me Lyrics 17 years ago
I find this song to be very playful and erotic, like two kids in love just waiting and longing and finally reaching that point when you trust eachother enough to go all the way. At least that's what it meant to me when I first discovered it, and that's what it'll always remind me of. That very intimate feeling when you first get sexually involved with someone you've been waiting for for the longest time, you've loved the waiting but you love the encounter even more though it's almost surreal that it is actually happening.
"But if I had your faith/face" - If you just look me in the eye and trust me, don't be shy, it's just me and I'll take care of you.
"If only I was sure that my head on the door was a dream" is to me the feeling of leaving your body when having an orgasm, and I've fantasised about it so many times that I don't know if it's really happening, should I turn back?, is it really the right time?, but yeah, this is it and I love it though it scares me to death. Cute ^^

Kent – Kevlar Soul Lyrics 17 years ago
The only way this could be about racism would be if he actually with the 'my land'-part refers to an actual nation, and if the kevlar is a symbol for the fear of what you don't know, of a different cultur expanding within your own safe borders. I think that's a good description of how some people against immigration feel.
This said, I do not share these thoughts and feelings, I'm simply trying to figure the lyrics out together with the possibility of them being about racism. Considering how surreal many of Kent's lyrics are, especially the originals, I wouldn't be surprised if they left it open for interpretation :)
Take care.

The Fray – How To Save A Life Lyrics 17 years ago
This song became very personal to me when my best friend died from an overdose. He went to treatments for many years but always slipped back, and this august he was found dead in an apartment with another addict who survived. To me the song is totally about him now, and my and everyone else's struggle to keep him clean and safe, and how you felt like a faliure when you couldn't do just that.
I don't think it has to be about drugs though, it can be about any kind of self-destructive lifestyle that you won't let your loved-ones help you out with. A violent relationship, drugs, depression, eating disorders. How you manipulate people to leave you alone with your problem, and how they don't get an honest chance to save you, still they blame themselves afterwards because deep inside they knew all along that they could have done more.

Bright Eyes – Amy in the White Coat Lyrics 17 years ago
I actually always though he said "did you get that cut from the principal?", and it made me think it was some time ago when teachers were allowed to beat kids to dicipline them. The scars and bruises from her fathers abuse are assumed to come from the teachers or from other kids. But now I realize he says 'coat'. Anyways...

I have a very clear picture of this family in my head. To me the mother has died, and the father couldn't deal with losing her so the daughters were forced to take her place, both doing the chores like making tea and stuff, but mostly to have sex with him. And I always feel it like he's just saying she's his favourite, when he in fact says that to all of his daughters to make each one feel special though they all have to go through the same thing. I don't know.
This fills me with actual pain, from my feet to my head. This song brings me back, makes me feel I haven't grown anything since then and am still just as vulnerable and weak.
Conor's voice is amazing always, but here... it's almost too hard to listen to. Yet so beautiful.

Ben Lee – Catch My Disease Lyrics 17 years ago
Seriously, anyone thinking this is about STD doesn't know any of the lyrics besides the refrain. It's obviously about catching HIS disease, and HIS disease is joy and feeling content with life as it is. He's simply saying that what ever happens in life, it's still life and it's worth loving and enjoying rather than running around being bitter or sad.
I love the message. It's a song that neither gives nor takes sympathy, it is just a simple message: Hey people, this is a really nice way to look at life so try it.

The Used – Bulimic Lyrics 17 years ago
Masterpiece00, I too feel that it's about the actual eating disorder and not so much about any other addiction or anything else. But now when I've read all the comments I can see that almost everyone think the bulimia is just a metaphore for drug abuse or a bad relationship. Maybe you have to have experienced an eating disorder to be able to really see it in the lyrics? People that haven't ever dealed with body image and issues with food and all that usually can't understand how it works and feels, and that's why they don't see that these lyrics actually describe bulimia perfectly.
Anyways. I don't agree that it's absurd to say that it's about a breakup, getting rid of an addiction is very much like a breakup from the drug of choice. The struggle is kind of the same no matter what kind of selfdestruction you're in to, you can easily apply these lyrics on any tough situation. That's what I feel!
Take care, y'all!

Mew – The Zookeeper's Boy Lyrics 17 years ago
I kind of agree with you Tack-o-Rama, but I don't think it's necessarily that obvious that it really is about an actual zookeeper. I just get the feeling that's a metaphore for someone who's given in totally to all these ways of expressing emotion, instincts much like the ones animals have (fear or surprise makes an ostrich hide it's head for example). I haven't yet decided if I think this person, the zookeeper's boy, always has been this sensitive and if he hasn't had to encounter the superficial modern life before and now when he does (to look for this love you're talkong about) he's shocked by how industral people have become, they don't pause to wait out the rain (don't allow themselves to rest, grieve or feel at all because everything has to be so effective), or if he actually is one of all those people and the animal instincts inside of him was brought to life when he fell so deeply in love, and now he sees what world he's been a part of before he opened his heart and eyes.
It kind of makes me think of the Junglebook where Mowgli has to face his own species to get close to the girl he falls in love with. Does anyone agree?

Love this song. The video isn't that great though, sure It's beautiful and the camera work is wonderful but my favourite Mew video is She came home for Christmas. Still, Jonas is so sweet in this one. I love the weird thing he does with his hand, as if he's leaning against something that isn't there and sometimes it's this "Oh, behave!"-gesture.

I hope I made some sense, I'm tired and hungry. Aw.

Peace and love, everyone.

Mew – She Came Home For Christmas Lyrics 17 years ago
To me this song is about rape. I was a victim of sexual abuse for many years (age 3 to 16) and that distanced me from my family because that was where it all took place, but when my older sister had a baby I realised that I wanted to be a part of it. So I "came home for christmas", I returned to my roots and decided to love my parents and my sisters no matter how much I wish they'd been able to protect me from my much older brother's abuse.
This song to me kind of expresses how my boy- and girlfriends through the years have felt when I've explained, how they've been forced to realize that the scars won't ever disappear totally and I still feel very insecure about my sexuality and how to express it. My longest relationship was with a guy I met when I was fifteen, I didn't tell him anything until after two years (yes, I was his girlfriend during the last years of abuse), and when I did tell him he asked himself all these questions. He couldn't believe that we'd had sex sometimes the same day I was abused, and he never really got over the fact that him and I had sex though I really wasn't ready and didn't want to. Anyways, after that relationship I started being more open about these issues, now I know how to say no and I'm not ashamed for what I've been through anymore.
Sorry for writing so much egocentrical stuff but I really felt like telling my story since it's perfect for this song, at least to me. Peace and love, everyone!

I looove this song, haven't even heard the cover but I can't imagine it being better than the original. I love that it actually is about something really hard, lack of the ability to let someone in and to trust and love, but Kate sings it with such an excitement and enthusiasm, as if she's already decided that it's just stupid not daring to take the chance and she's giving in to the person loving her and kind of laughs as her own fear instead of allowing it to take her further away from the possibility of experiencing true love. Her way to use every inch of her voice is wonderful, and she's such a beautiful and sensual woman. Aah, Kate! My precious!

Belle & Sebastian – The Chalet Lines Lyrics 18 years ago
Schatzi, that's a great point you're making. I haven't even thought about it and since I'm swedish I had no idea there even was such a children's rhyme but if it is like you said then couldn't it just be an expression for that she'll find a place where she can just pass her time, let the days turn into weeks and so on? Not in a good way obviously, just like... ah, I don't know how to explain, but maybe she hopes that if she just leaves the place where it happened then maybe she'll get over it by herself if she just gives it time rather than asking for help. The sadness in Stuart's voice when he sings this line makes it clear that it won't happen, she cannot leave the pain and memories behind and she will keep falling apart no matter where she tries to hide from them. The "She caught the bus"-part is the only part of the song where Stuart turns into an observer rather than the girl herself, as if he's watching her slowly shaking his head knowing what she's thinking and that none of it will make it easier.
Take care y'all.

I love the fact that Stuart sings this, rather than Isobel even though it's obviously is about a girl. It makes Stuart seem like such a sensitive and sweet guy, and his voice is so tender.
It's a really sad song, especially since it's so true. "Oh, what's the fucking point at all?" really is the question that keeps rape victims from reporting it, you can almost be sure that justice won't get the rapist since there's never enough proof nor resources. The mixture of apathy, sadness, pain and hatred is so perfect in this song, almost as if he'd gone through it himself. Love it. One of their best songs.

Yeah Yeah Yeahs – Maps Lyrics 18 years ago
I fell in love with one of my best friends (I'm bisexual and she's straight) and listening to this during that period in my life made it all about me loving this girl, being her shoulder to cry on and always taking care of her but she still didn't consider me more than a friend. She went off with guys that constantly did her wrong and broke her heart, and every time I picked up the pieces. I was so desperate for her love and I couldn't for the world understand why she didn't give me a chance rather than keep seeing those guys when they obviously didn't care for her like I did. I had a crush on her on and off for a couple of years, but I only told her how I felt once and I did that after she'd had sex with a guy without really wanting to. I just told her "I know you consider yourself straight and I respect that, but I wish you could realize that I'm the person I've always been, I've always been your friend when no one else has and I would never jeopardize that so please trust me when I say that none of those guys love you like I do". Anyhow, I'm over her now but this song says everything about my longing for her to find a bigger space for me in her heart. So that's what it's about to me.
Peace!

Mew – Snow Brigade Lyrics 18 years ago
Am I the only one getting the feeling that this song is about drug abuse? The snow is cocaine, it might make you feel happier or smarter for a while, but the winter is the addiction taking over making you isolate from your believes and real friends. When it turns into a downward spiral. His snow brigade is just a way to express his urge to have his healthy happy friend back:
I'll find you somewhere
show you how much I care
know that there is no escape
from my snowbrigade
He swears to not give up until he's done everything he can to free his friend from the drugs, no matter how impossible the situation is. His friend can hide from the truth and from people judging him by getting stoned, but he can never escape the real love and devotion of true friendship.
I hope I've made my point, just like Mew english isn't my first language (I'm from Sweden) so I never know if I make myself clear or not :P
Hugs and kisses, everyone!

Blink-182 – I Miss You Lyrics 18 years ago
To me the girl isn't dead, she's just a misfit, an outsider who doesn't consider herself able to have a relation or a normal life since she's too much of a weirdo and no one can really love her. She keeps the distance to everything and everybody, including this guy because she's afraid he'll realize that he can get much better. She hides from him hoping that he'll give up, because she feels safe in her lonely bubble and doesn't believe there's room for another. And with this song he tries to convince her that he really does love her and will do anything, even become an outsider like her, to be with her. Jack and Sally are not accepted in "the normal world", and neither will these lovers be, and he wants her to see that he's ready to make that sacrifice if she just agrees to let him do it. By telling her to not waste her time on her, he means that she shouldn't go around worrying about him giving his regular life up for her, because she's already won him over and is already the voice inside his head, she's all he thinks about and that will never change.
So just let the guy give you all his sweet freakshow lovin', girl! :P

The Smashing Pumpkins – Disarm Lyrics 19 years ago
I saw a documentary about Billy Corgan recently where he said that this song was his way of telling the world about his rough childhood and the fact that he was abused. How an abused child looses his freedom to express himself, and that he with this song says that he is not a victim anymore, he was a scared and broken child and he was forced to mature way too quickly but now he is a grown man and he doesn't need his antagonist anymore.
I've also read that the line "Cut that little child inside of me and such a part of you" in the beginning was "Cut that little child 'cause sodomy is such a part of you". I don't know if this is true but if it is it surely makes it clear that the abuse was at least partly sexual.

Now It's Overhead – Wonderful Scar Lyrics 19 years ago
"The dogs put to sleep, your brother no longer is here. But Thanksgiving is coming and you have such a wonderful scar dear."
These lines always make make me think of myself, and the whole meaning comes clear. The thing is that my much older brother sexually abused me for many years and when this was brought to surface he wasn't allowed to visit us anymore, BUT "thanksgiving is coming and you have such a wonderful scar dear", everytime a holiday like christmas or any other family stuff comes there's always this big argue about if I can stand having him around or not, and I always end up crying upstairs with my family including my brother are partying downstairs. That's my wonderful scar. And it never fades much because at these times I have to have him around for my family's best.
Yeah well, that's what this song is about to me. It's about me.
