Haven't read all the comments, so someone might mentioned it... This song would sound like the best ever song Link'n'Bark had recorded, and thankfully they didn't ! I hate LP, and love APC, and this song is really reminiscent of those linkin puberty sounds... every time I hear this one, I remember of that shitty band, so naturally I found my own correspodence in these lines. For example, this album is extremely political, and LP hasn't got anything raging to political, so I thought these lines are addressed to those guyz. 'Believe it what you will'... who said it ? It is not surprising that anyone can find his own explanation for any lyric wrote not quite clearly... and this one suits me fine. Read it once again considering my opinion and I'm sure it won't be science fiction for you... of course, interpreting this song this way is just my matter of opinion, so suite yourself !!! |

Innocence metaphor is the best explanation, so far. When I first heard this song and listened (not read) to the lyrics, I first tought of a ''daddy's little girl became a whore'' story cliche, interpreted in most beautiful way... Now that I've read the lyrics, I have even less clue what's it about, and by the time I've read your comments - I forgot anything original I could have came up with added to previous posts. Beautiful song, and Chronos Quartet rules on this one, they fill up, in and out harmony all the way song goes... wonder how this sounds live, without the string sections... acoustic version of 'the stone' with Dave alone made cry...wonder, I wonder, anyone heard this song on their shows ? |

I really don't know what Dave had in mind with this lyric, but for me it's almost scarry and almost beautiful that someone came with the song that interpretes my life so precisely in very few words... This song is connected to a big bunch of synchronicity cases that happened to me, especially considering this girl I loved the most... aughhh, explaining "What does this song mean to you?" for me would take me 3 pages on this site to write, and your lifetime to digest it properly... and explaining what synchronicity means would take few more pages, too... ok, I am the stone forever cruising Bahamas, hope YOU :p read this... Anyway, to other readers of this comment, it wasn't even surprised to find out that Dave is Capricornus in zodiac, just as I am... It's really strange how artists write songs as their own, but as soon as they publish songs, songs don't belong to them anymore, they belong to their audience. Definitely the best and the strongest song I ever heard from Dave, and definitly the one I felt the most... Nothing touches me more than this one, sometimes I have to skip this song as the presence of certain memories overwhelms me...BEAUTIFUL |

On VH1 storytellers Dave starts this song but then stops it with totally strangely drunken laughter tellin' :"I gotta stop... it just got too funny in the mid of that... I wasn't thinking anything close to this song...(something)... I wasn't even near the song..I don't know what I was thinkin' about..." I agree with that issue of questioning your faith and beliefs, like waiting for an accomplishment through the efforts you put by that path, but the answers you search for through your existence don't come... "I thought of you And turned to the gate On my way came up with the answers I scratched my head And the answers were gone"... sounds like a satori - a sudden enlightment that lasts for a second but when it's over, "answers are gone". Beautiful all the way - it's even more beautiful that this is the last song on the album...no, I was wrong, it's not beautiful... It's PERFECT ! ! ! |

Well, you have to be serious to write this down and remember the words every time you perform this song... and I thought that the girls of porn would have more comments. If this song is only about sex&food joking metaphors, then why would they put so much brand names in it ? It describes a lot of Hollywood (and USA) decadence in most funny ways, for real. I think that 'give your dog a bone' refers to typical consumer - you watch this decadence altough you don't participate it, so you got a bone while someone is chewing that meat. Yeah, MB are one of the funniest bands ever, but one of the most clever bands, too. |

No matter how you try to deny something, it's still there... for example : if I close my eyes, then they won't see me - it's a typical reasoning in these situations. There are far more complicated things than this one can believe or refuse to accept as an axiom. By realizing where to put a line between childlish headbumping and having will & faith makes one "graduate". And yeah, this is also one hell of a tune... |

Good Lord, thank you for me being troubled 13 years old teenager when this album came out, so I had better things on my mind then to think "that in the end, it doesn't really matter..." :-) Forget the glamour and mumble jackhammer - it makes sense... quess this song is a recipe for itself. |

Never been a fan of conceptual art until TooL came around... Persons translate deep songs like Pushit the way it suits them, and everyone will find 'the right meaning' and 'the right way to interprete' lyrics in the right way to fit into his/her own mental 'device', due to their own preconceptions, frustrations, meanings etc. For me, personally, this song has been the best introduction to the methods of Jung's theory of 'Reflective Cycology' :-)... which refers to 'phenomenom' of projecting your own virtues and lacks onto another person, making him/her reflection of yourself - just like Jesus said about 'thorn in someone's eye becomes a stick in your own eye' (or something like that, I'm sorry for this paraphrase). What it means is that what might bother you with one person is actually something that you might bother another person with. ...like someone pointed previously about the inner struggle over/against oneself, I thought for Maynard that he addressed this song to himself : 'who am I to judge and strike you down' refers to what I previously wrote on Jung's theory... The thing is that I was the one addressing this song to myself, and if I hadn't learned important lesson on this projecting onto other persons, I quess I would become schyzophrenic, to say at least. ;-) Seriously, TooL did one hell of a job here and I'm glad that I really don't know what this song means for them... However, I recommend you all to find more on Jung, because I'm too lazy to write down here all the concepts on above mentioned, and it might be useful to someone who might, instead, post something originally on this topic. |

I'm just surprised to see none of you connected 4 degrees with supposed 4th degree in Kabala initiation system... it is related a lot to planetar qualities of Venus... decadence, boemism and extravagance in joys occurs as a trigger to initiate altering your own states of mind and move on to a next degree in recognition of mutual connections between Macrocosmos & Microcosmos...
