Iron & Wine – Cinder and Smoke Lyrics 19 years ago
Manda grace05 caused me to rethink this song.I think it is about shame, but shame a duaghter or child has for her family. Her homelife, her family history or their reputation, is a disgrace, its a flame and it is painful to her. he wants to help, she asks him to help her, but she is too entrenched and cannot truly leave the grip of the family dynamics and drama. She is torn and too entrenched. Family can do this to you.

Iron & Wine – Fever Dream Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a song of yearning. I agree with syncthia above, however in this case I believe the point of his affection, this woman, is incapable of expression or wont stop long enough to feel and express. He craves this though.

Iron & Wine – Each Coming Night Lyrics 19 years ago
Sam evokes such memories of my childhood (I grew up with parents of the 60's and 70'). In the summers we would have these incredible parties...at our home, at the beach, on boats, in dark corners of taverns, with beautiful guitar music and lots of love. Even as a child of 7,8 and 9, I felt the love. Wow! Thats what Sam brings me back to. And I did not grow up to be a hippy, but now have second thoguhts...its in me for sure!

Iron & Wine – The Sea and the Rhythm Lyrics 19 years ago
Allegorically (sp?), the sea is endless, boundless, deep and mysterious. Its ends have not been discovered and its depths have not been explored. This is the love these two people are experiencing. It knows no bounds, it is thrilling and magical and boundless. The rhythm of the sea is undulating and in perfect syncopation. When you are in love,, that is how it feels to be making love- perfectly and instinctually choreographed.

Iron & Wine – Weary Memory Lyrics 19 years ago
The singer must be very close to his mother...I believe that is who he is singing too...after he has lost her. But why are his memories weary? And why is he only chosing some memories to carry? Was it a challenging relationship...or did she linger on her death bed?

Iron & Wine – Upward Over the Mountain Lyrics 19 years ago
This is a song of encouragement and faith. The singer is comforting his mother, ensuring her that each day brings hope...for him, for her, for the life he has clearly left behind. He brings forth memories of sad times that they got through, to illustrate that each day brings new hope, that they did survive. They have lived through much together and life will go on. He assures her that he is moving on, while at the same time he apologizes for it, it feels as a betrayal to him to be moving beyond all she gave and did for him. But it is hopeful and he hopes she will feel happy about this.
